Secrets from the Gazette Do you ever wonder what happens behind the scenes? Here is a bit of our story. The Gazette is printed professionally, this is only possible thanks to the funding raised by the business adverts in your Gazette. So please remember, if you use them tell them you found them here. To help each Editor to deliver a consistent Gazette we have guidelines in place, developed over years of experience with past and present team members. Quite a bit of the Editors time is spent on the layout of the Gazette using an up to date publishing program which does a lot of the tedious work. Our treasurer is also our tech guy, he found the new program for us, set it all up and taught us how to use it. We also have two proofreaders who keep the editors on their toes, when you know someone else is checking the Gazette then it really helps to focus your attention on details, layout and accuracy. Before you see your printed Gazette, delivery is organized if possible on 26th of the month. Over 30 people receive bundles of Gazettes and bring them to your door, we are ever grateful to all of you, one person delivering 500 copies would probably take the whole month. Several Gazettes are posted far and wide, for this service we charge to cover our costs. The Gazette is free if you live in the Parish, funded as mentioned above, by the business adverts. It can also been seen online on our Parish Council website, go to stgennys.co.uk. And click the link ‘The Parish’. It appears here by the magic that is our Parish Clerk. Collecting money from advertisers is yet another job, emails or letters are sent to each advertiser when their payment is due. No small task as there are sometimes 60 to deal with. This job is made easier if payment is made after the first reminder, for that we thank you. To help us to help you, we ask that you send in your events as soon as you can. After our deadline of 17th the Gazette has to be proof read, corrected and checked again and sent to the printers, printing takes 2 or 3 days, so you can understand why it is helpful to have your emails in early in the month and also why we will reject, or defer to the next month, anything that comes in after 17th. Please, also take the time to send in reports after the events, these are always of interest, especially if you hold a fundraiser. It is also a good opportunity to invite more people to join you next time. Sometimes we wonder how many people do read the Gazette we joke among the team about ‘’our reader’’ as if there is only one of you reading so let’s find out shall we? Unscramble the following RUSTLOVERLEANWEEAL and send the solution and your name in by email. (CLUE, you will find a phrase describing the Gazette team in 4 words) 5
Agricultural Charity The 3rd annual St Gennys Harvest lunch took place at the end of October, this was reported in the December Gazette. The funds raised went to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution. Moses Andrews has sent in more information about this charity. Most people (including me) are keen to support well-known charities such as Macmillan, Cornwall Hospice Care and the Air Ambulance, but there are other charities that discreetly provide much needed support, and which many people are totally unaware of. RABI (Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution) is a welfare charity focused on supporting farming families and farm-workers. Anyone can get into financial difficulty through no fault of their own. Extreme weather, illness, accidents, animal disease, family breakdown, bereavement and cash flow problems are just some of the reasons why people approach RABI for help. Time and again I hear people say “there’s no such thing as a poor farmer”. The reality in places like Devon and Cornwall can be very different. Imagine being the one who is desperate not to lose the farm that has been in the family for many generations, so they hide the situation as best they can until they can continue no longer. What if a farmer with no family support is badly injured and cannot care for the livestock? RABI Welfare workers visit households where fuel bills are unpaid and there is no food at all in the house. Suicide rates are high in the rural community. The support offered is tailored to individual circumstances and can be both short and long term. RABI can help people in lots of diverse ways. For example, they may be able to pay for relief workers to help on the farm if the farmer has to go into hospital - and pay for hospital travel costs. They may pay for disability aids. They also help people to claim the benefits they are entitled to – they regularly see people totally unaware of the financial support available. They can also fund business appraisals, free debt advice, and support people to get up to date with paperwork so that it is actually possible to establish which benefits they may be entitled to. Where there is a need to earn additional income off the farm, they can fund training for one of the household to enable them to gain paid employment. If anyone would like more information about RABI, they should visit the website www.rabi.org.uk or call the Freephone Helpline: 0808 281 9490 8

Event report The Parish Seniors Christmas lunch on the 8th December was a great success and hopefully enjoyed by all who came to eat, help and entertain. Our thanks go to, in no particular order, The Burden Trust for their back- ing, Wainhouse Stores, the Co-op Bude, Lidl, Fran Holmes and Pat Bird for their generosity and much appreciated donations. Elaine Bird and Karen Skinner again did a fantastic job in the kitchen by producing an amazing Christmas meal and a great selection of desserts. Time was given up by our loyal helpers, Sally Johnson, Rosie Norman, Sally Batchelor, Kate Holding, Paul Herr, Carol Cook, Lesley Cooke and Jacqui Jepp, who all kept things moving during the afternoon. Our thanks go to Julie Morris who supplied welcome teas and coffees. Thanks also to my wife Wendy who along with Elaine and Karen brought everything together. Our entertainment was again the Ukulele Band, All @ C, great fun and sing along songs. They take no money for their performances but carry a donation box for the Cornwall Air Ambulance. Nick Danks and the Crack- ington Ladies Choir came along to sing a few of the songs they have re- cently worked on and stayed to sing some Carols with everyone to finish off the day. All in all, a lovely afternoon on a very wet and windy day. Thanks to all of our guests for venturing out. Richard Leach All @ C 14

Letter Below is a copy of the letter mentioned in the Parish Council report, on page 35. Leslie and a disturbing Experience As Leslie strolled one late summers day along the lane outside his vicarage in the little Cornish Hamlet of St Gennys he saw a solitary male figure walking towards him. It was not a person he recognised and he assumed it was probably a holiday visitor. As they neared each other Leslie anticipated that they would exchange a ‘good day’ or at any rate a smile or a nod of acknowledgement but the man walked straight by, appearing not even to notice Leslie’s presence, as if totally pre-occupied. Leslie strolled on a short distance but feeling rather puzzled by this odd behavior he retraced his steps to see where the stranger was going. To his utter astonishment there was no sign of the man, yet there seemed no where that he could have left the road or gone to. He had apparently vanished into thin air. Leslie related this story to local guest house owners and to farmers who might have taken on a casual labourer, but no one knew the man. I imagine that, when Leslie told us this story many years ago, he would have made some comment about the man’s style of dress. But as I have no recollection of that I can only assume that it was not out of the ordinary in any way or it would have formed part of the story. Leslie said he found the event disturbing because there seemed to be no explanation. Was it a ghost? Many years later, in 1992, Jeanette (nee Fee) and her husband Colin Smith called at the vicarage, by then a guest house, and the proprietors on learning the reason for their visit made them very welcome. They showed them the portrait of John Wesley, still hanging in the hall as Leslie had requested and even took it down for Colin to photograph Leslie’s inscription to that effect on the back. Then, in the course of conversation, and unaware of course of Leslie’s incident, they mentioned that there had been occasional reports by people having a strange experience in the lane, identical in fact to Leslie’s. They said that there had been suggestions that it was the ghost of the very last vicar of the parish upon whose death the parish had been merged with its neighbour and that the vicar ‘was your Great Uncle’! Unfortunately, at the time of their visit Jeanette did not know the story of Leslie’s experience and so was not able to lay that particular ghost to rest. Notices PRESCRIPTIONS Can be collected or dropped off at the Snooker Club 1:15pm to 3pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Please stay for a cup of tea and a biscuit. We have a mobile phone so that people can call us between those times to check if their prescription has arrived. The number is 07932 003126. The phone will only be switched on during the sessions. Thanks to Janey, Ellen and Annie and helpers NEWSPAPER DELIVERY I'd like to start the New Year by drawing your attention to the newspaper subscription and delivery group we have formed in Crack- ington. The closure of the post office store threatened those of us who are devoted print news readers with deprivation. But we had a solution; form a group of subscribers, ask for volunteer drivers and enlist the cooperation of Wainhouse Stores. So let's start with a salute to our volunteer drivers, Roy Harmes, Ellen Hawley, David Newton, Pauline Nunn and Peter Moore. They do a wonderful job and keep the news print junkies happy and informed. If you would like to join our subscription group please ring Ida on 230 311 and we'll set you up. You can order newspapers daily, weekly or any other interval you can think of. Papers are delivered to Ida and Ellen's house on the estate and you can collect your copies there. This is a can do village and we CAN DO! Ida Swearingen Wainhouse Stores will be open on New Years Day 9am-12noon. SOUP & SWEET LUNCHES The four soup & sweet lunches that took place at the Institute in November and December were all well attended and everyone enjoyed the delicious soups and sweets, produced by many kind people. A big thank you to all those who came and supported, and an equally big thank you to members of Dizzard Community Group, the Institute Committee, the Garden Club and the Church for organising and hosting the lunches, and not forgetting Gill and Jon who set up the tables on each occasion. The sum of £800 was made for Church funds. Anthony 24

Surf Club report Another great year for Crackington SLSC. Firstly, we would like to thank everyone for their continued support, we couldn't do this for the children if we didn't have people willing to help and support us. Whether it be fundraising or helping with sessions we are very grateful to you all, not least to the Burden Trust who have continually supported the club with grant funding over many years and to whom we are truly thankful to. We have taken part in two fun days with the nippers, one at Hayle and one at Bude, both were brilliant and an invaluable experience for the members, we adults had great fun too. In the summer some of the juniors completed and passed their board competency and tube rescue awards along with some of the nipper coaches (some first timers, some renewing). We have been back in the pool since October half term where the nippers have been developing their speed and technique alongside learning how to safely tow a casualty as well as having fun playing games. As seems to be the trend over the past few years we have gained many more children onto the waiting list, we are at capacity at the moment but we hope to welcome some new nippers over the coming year as well as saying goodbye to some who will journey on into juniors. We are looking forward to new challenges for 2019 as we are undertaking a different assessment criteria for the nippers. SLSGB have developed a new levels system which we are to put in place for the coming year. We also hope to carry out surveillance on the beach and possibly a first aid station working alongside the RNLI, this would be something that all the community could get involved with, more details to follow in the coming months. We hope you all had a great Christmas and wish you a wonderful New Year. From all at Crackington SLSC Penkenna Margaret Kirkwood 26
