The 15th Kerry Sneem Scouts Group Peace Light 2019 In Palestine an eternal f lame burns in the Church of the Nativity in the little town of Bethlehem – this is the place where Mary and Joseph went, two thousand years ago and where the baby Jesus was born. In December a small ceremony was held in the Grotto where a Palestini- an and an Israeli Scout took a light f rom the f lame and carried it to Tel Aviv airport. The light was brought to Vi- enna where a Peace Light Service was held. A young Scout carried the ‘f lame’ to the f ront of the Church and lit the Vienna Peac e Candle. Representatives of Scout associations f rom all over the World were t hen invited to light their lan- terns f rom this candle and to take this symbol of Peace home to their own coun- tries. 15th Kerry Sneem collected the light f rom 2nd Tralee Scouts in Tralee, on December 21st and shared this light of Peace with our community at St. Michael’s Church, St. Patrick’s Church and the Church of Transf iguration over Christmas. The light which we shared was carried by Scouts, by train and by car, bus and on f oot through Austria, Switzerland and France and through the Channel Tunnel over to Dover in England. The light next travelled to Holyhead where it was brought on Stena Line by Scouts over the Irish S ea to Dublin. Over the Christmas period the light has been shared by thousands of young people to Churches and other places of Christian worship; to Hospitals and to Hostels for homeless people, across the length and breadth of Ire- land. Members of all sections f rom Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts took part in the journey of the light of Peace in Sneem and Tahilla. Through f acilitation of bring- ing the light to diff erent churches, participating in readings and writing their own ref lections. I would like to thank everyone who participated in the event locally and abroad. Especially Fr. Liam O’Brien and Rev Michael Cavanagh who ena- ble the youth to participate in spreading the Light of peace this Christmas. Special thanks to Sean who lets us use The Lof t and also to Kris van Daele for doing the sound system so everyone could hear the piano even in the f ur- thest corner of the bar. Tahilla Community National School SEAI One Good Idea In October, two teams f rom the senior classes entered the SEAI One Good Idea competition. One Good Idea aims to help students gain a greater understanding of energy eff i- ciency and climate change by challenging them to develop an awareness campaign to creatively make people aware of the simple changes that we can all make in our lives to help address these issues. We are delighted to announce that both teams f rom our school were successf ul in stage 1 of the competition and have been selected to attend the Cork Regional Event in the Omniplex Cinema on Monday, 24th of February 2020. At the event both teams, ‘Lego Lif e Savers’ and ‘Climate Change Kids’ will pre- sent a Presentation Pitch and deliver their 1-minute f ilm on the Big Screen to a panel of expert judges. If successf ul, the children will go on to attend the National Finals in Dublin later in the year. Green Schools This year the theme of our Green School’s Flag is ‘Global Citizenship Travel’. This theme aims to increase the number of students walking, cycling, scooting, using public transport or carpooling to school. It also promotes good health and a more active lif estyle, benef iting not just our environment but our bodies too. During ‘Clean Air Week’ Dave our Green Schools Officer came to visit on Monday 18th of November. Luckily we have very ded- icated students and parents who embraced this year’s theme and were walking and carpooling to school in November. We did lots of f un activities with Dave to help us understand the im- portance of using environmentally f riendly methods of travel. We also played a giant game of snakes and ladders in the hall. Hospital Visit and Panto The school was invited to visit the residents of Kenmare Community Nursing Unit in December 2019. The children sang songs and played music and brought great joy to all those listening. It was a lovely outing. We then f ollowed on to the Carne- gie Arts Centre to see Santa’s Sooty Christmas. The children had a wonderf ul time. Christmas Concert The children and teachers worked together to produce a unique play for the Christmas concert this year. It was very enjoyable. Thanks to everyone who was able to be there. The children also had a chance to give us a glimpse of their individual interests and talents as part of the show. We f inished with a ren- dition of Christmas songs and a f ew tunes on the tin-whistle. Page 12

Pictured lef t Gearóid Hallissey playing his part as ‘evil manager of the orphanage’. Here’s some of the beautif ul work produced by the students of Tahilla CNS as part of Can- vas Club. Many thanks to Mary for volunteering her time. St. Brigid’s Cross Workshop Friday 24th January 1pm till 3pm. Please join us in Tahilla Community National School. St. Michael’s National School SEAI One Good Idea Competition Everyone is talking about climate change. And we all k now it is a serious is- sue. But nobody thinks that they can make a diff erence themselves. Or can we? Earlier this year when discussing ideas f or the “SEAI One Good Idea Competi- tion” we discussed ways that we could help the planet by making little changes in our daily lif e. We realized that we all could make one small change that would make a huge diff erence- Shopping and Eating in Season. We are very excited to be one of 5 schools chosen to compete in the regional f inals in Cork on Monday 24th February. Diff erent f ruits and vegetables can only grow at certain times of the year. Which means that certain f ruits and vegetables should only be in shops at cer- tain times of the year. But have you ever not been able to buy strawberries in winter? When f ruits and vegetables are out of season, they are injected with pesticides and chemicals that are terrible f or your health, and LED grow lights are t hen used as artif icial sunlight which burns so many f ossil f uels which are killing the environment. The f ruits and vegetables are then imported into Ireland f rom the other side of the world, which emits more CO2 than you can count. For example, a recent survey that we conducted in 5th and 6th class in our local supermarkets showed that raspberries are out of season and yet they are still in shops. These are coming all the way f rom Egypt, which by the way is 2,707 air miles away! That is emitting 143,471 pounds of CO2 just in one trip. The price of the produce that is imported is more expensive than it would be if it were in season. So if you buy and eat in season, you are automatically buy- ing Irish produce, which is benef iting your pocket, your health and your planet. We are trying to convince people to take our pledge to do their best to eat and shop in season. We can make a diff erence. So can you. We are making a keyring which will help you to shop In season. The key ring will be f or sale in the f ew weeks! Please get in touch if you want to buy one! #goodreasontoeatinseason. “I pledge to eat and shop in season” We are taking the pledge. Are you? Yours sincerely, Sneem School Page 14

Sneem TidyTowns We had our f irst meeting of the new year last Tuesday. We’re delighted to have got the 5 trees planted on the newly resur- f aced Sportsfield road with help f rom Kerry County Council, Leader f unding and suppliers Nangle & Nieson who grew them at Aherla, Co. Cork. The trees we ended up planting are Pyrus calleryana Chanticleer, an ornament al pear which will have pretty blossom in spring and nice autumn colour. We are get- ting metal surrounds made to f urther protect them. We also planted 20m of wildlif e f riendly hedging behind the Sneem Digital Hub - thanks to Louis, Joe and the CE team. Our main project for the coming months will be the develop- ment of the Community Orchard behind Seaview and we hope everyone will get involved in choosing the trees and planting and maintaining what we hope will be a great new resource f or the village.
