$2 The Scottish Associations of South Australia Inc. Member of the Multicultural Communities Council of SA Inc. 2019 SCOTTISH DATEBOOK and DIRECTORY Catherine Helen Spence 1825 - 1910 Scottish Associations of SA Website: www.scotasa.com.au
Catherine Helen Spence Catherine Helen Spence (1825-1910), was born on 31 October 1825 near Melrose, Scotland, daughter of David Spence, lawyer and banker, and his wife Helen, née Brodie. In 1839 David's wheat speculations failed and Catherine could not further her education in Edinburgh. The family arrived in South Australia in the’Palmyra’, arriving in November. David was appointed the first Town Clerk of the Adelaide Municipal Council in 1840-43. Helen Spence was a Teacher, Authoress and Philanthropist. She was also known as a feminist, journalist, literary critic, political activist and one of South Australia’s most significant social reformers. She had written two books on the colony in South Australia both anonymous and printed in London. The first novel about Australia written by a woman, Clara Morison: A Tale of South Australia. During the Gold Fever (1854) in 2 volumes, followed by Tender and True: A colonial Tale in 2 volumes (1858). Mr Hogarth’s Will, 3 volumes (1865) was the first to bear her name as author. She also had several other books published, but in her autobiography in 1910 wrote discerningly, ‘my work on newspapers and reviews is more characteristic of me and intrinsically better work than I have done in fiction’. In 1872 she helped Caroline Emily Clark to found the Boarding-Out-Society, to board orphaned, destitute and reformed delinquent children in the homes of families, and visit them to check on their behaviour and treatment. By 1878 she had overcome her diffidence and won repute as a literary critic and social commentator, and was able to express her keen interest in the colony and its future, and she obtained a ready forum for her chosen causes. Most of her work for education was done with her pen. Spence supported the foundation of kindergartens and a government secondary school for girls. Her book, ‘The Laws We Live Under’ (1880) was the first social studies textbook used in Australian schools. She was the first Woman Preacher in SA. In 1891 she became Vice-President of the Women’s Suffrage League of SA, pressing the Government to give women the vote. This was granted in 1894. She then became Australia’s first female candidate when she stood, unsuccessfully, to represent SA at a Federation Convention. She was one of the first Trustees of the James Brown Memorial Trust formed in 1892. Helen died at Norwood on 3rd April 1910 aged 84 years. She was interred in the cemetery of St Jude’s Anglican Church, Brighton. There is a statue in Light Square, Adelaide to honour her life and her devotion to the Suffragette cause. 1|Page
