Brisbane & District Ladies’ Golf Association Inc. HISTORY The Junior Jug is an Inter District Match Play Tournament played between Junior girls of the seven districts of Queensland - Far North Queensland, North Queensland, Central Queensland, Sunshine Coast & Burnett District, Downs and South Western, Brisbane & District and Gold Coast. The event was the brain child of two of our successful golfers who began as Juniors in the late 1950’s, namely Pam Langford (nee Tait) and Gail Corry. Pam came from a golfing family, both parents being ‘A’ grade Golfers and playing regularly at Indooroopilly Golf Club and Gail was the daughter of the then Golf Professional at Bargara Golf Club just south of Bundaberg. In the early days there was little competition available for Junior Girls and both Pam and Gail played in the senior competitions. Fortunately the administration at both National and State Levels recognised that if golf was going to progress, junior girls in the game would need special programs as young players were the ‘future of the game.’ In 1961 the first ever Junior Interstate series was played and for this first series only three states competed - New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. Junior girls then were aged under 21 years however this age was to be revised as more Juniors started to play the game of golf and more talent was discovered and developed. The Burtta Cheney Junior Interstate Series, was being played annually and both Gail and Pam thought that a Queensland Intra District Match play series (in the lead up to our Junior Team travelling to the Burtta Cheney event) would be an ideal preparation for the Queensland Junior Team. Meg Nunn, a recognised name in golf administration in Queensland, finally convinced the then “QLGU” that an Intra Queensland Match Play Tournament should be staged. The concept was at long last adopted and the first Meg Nunn Tournament was held in Rockhampton in 1983. Gail continued to play in representative teams at both State and National levels whilst Pam was representing Queensland in both Junior and Second tournaments and becoming involved in Golf Administration. In the late 1970’s there was still no opportunity for young golfers in Queensland to compete in a teams events within the state, so Pam and Gail initiated a Junior Girls tournament fashioned along the lines of the Meg Nunn Tournament and as such, the Junior Jug was established. The Junior Jug was first played at Bargara Golf Club in December 1984. Golf is a very individual game and to foster team spirit, Gail and Pam were keen for a Foursome Match Play Round to be included in the tournament as one of the rounds. The early Junior Jug events did have a Foursome Match Play as one of the rounds, however this format has changed over the years to be what it is today. 9

Brisbane & District Ladies’ Golf Association Inc. MEG NUNN SALVER The Meg Nunn Salver is an Inter-District Matchplay Event - a competition contested annually by the seven Districts of Queensland – Far North Queensland, North Queensland, Central Queensland/Central Highlands, Sunshine Coast Burnett & District, Downs & South West, Gold Coast District and Brisbane & District. Each team consists of 6 players. Maximum handicap for the event is 16 and full handicaps apply. State Squad members, Q.A.S players and Junior players are not eligible for selection. As full handicap allowance applies, the players selected are not necessarily those with the lowest handicaps in the District as venues and local conditions will influence the spread of the handicaps of the players selected. As a guide, a player’s past history, and performances in Pennant matches has a large bearing on selection and a player’s win/loss record for the season is taken into account. The handicap of players’ opponents will also be taken into consideration in their win/loss record. Participation in BDLGA scheduled tournaments and championships is also taken into consideration. In 2019 the Meg Nunn Salver was played at Southport Golf Club and won by Central Qld/Central Highlands. Team members (pictured below) were Jackie Zuidam (Brisbane), Megan Bell (Riverlakes), Lyndal Plant (Indooroopilly), Collette Byrne (McLeod), Leigh Christensen (Nudgee) Emily Byrne (Brisbane). Non-playing Captain was Cheryl Sternberg; Team Manager - Judy Shelton. Results can be found on the Meg Nunn page of our website. In 2020 this event will be hosted by North Queensland District and played at Ayr Golf Club from 7-10 September. Brisbane & District Ladies’ Golf Association Inc. 2020 MEG NUNN SALVER (INTER-DISTRICT MATCH PLAY) AYR GOLF CLUB - MONDAY 7TH TO FRIDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER 2020 A HISTORY OF THE MEG NUNN SALVER AS WRITTEN BY HER DAUGHTER ANNE ALLETSON BROWN Early in the 1970's, Meg was the Country Vice-President of the Queensland Ladies Golf Union. In this role she undertook to visit as many of the country golf clubs in Queensland as she could, and I believe that only 3 clubs were not visited over a period of some 5 - 7 years. One western course she visited boasted that they had been able to put the grader over the fairways the week before her visit! Meg was accompanied at various times by Johnnie Boyle, a President of the QLGU and other times by Val Webster, also a President or Vice-President. They would fly to say Townsville, then drive west - not a mean feat for a couple of ladies of their age. Every course they visited, Meg played as she was a single marker in those days and was involved in the course rating. Meg began to understand that country ladies felt they were left out of the "QLGU" - that this body represented only those ladies who played golf in the south eastern corner of the State. At the time, districts were being formed. So the concept of an inter-district match play tournament on handicap, was put before the QLGU committee and the event came into being in the early 1980's. Pam Ranger, a member and committee person of the Surfers Paradise Golf Club presented the antique silver tray that now bears the name "Meg Nunn Salver" as the districts voted to name the event in her honour. The first Salver was played in Rockhampton in 1983. Far North Queensland did not send a team as they were a newly formed district and did not have the funds to send one. The draw had been done and Gold Coast were to play Central Queensland first match off. Val Webster tossed the coin for the honour and Gold Coast won the honour. At that time I was captain and the lowest marker of the Gold Coast team so I hit the first ball ever in the tournament named in honour of my Mum. I still get tears in my eyes when I think of it. My mother’s concept for the tournament was that the "grass-root turn up every week" country player could have the opportunity to play match play, represent her District and that each year new friends would be made amongst the teams and the Tournament be one of good golf, good companionship and great rivalry. It was not Meg's idea that the players who were members of the state team should be included in the Meg Nunn Salver as they had ample opportunity to attend interstate tournaments of a higher level. I have a replica of the salver here in our office, also the photos presented to her on the 15th anniversary of the tournament as a constant memory of great golfing days. 13
