Message from the Artistic Director In February 2020, The Fugard Theatre will turn ten years old, marking a defining moment in the history and the future of The Fugard. In the last decade, The Fugard has become synonymous with world-class theatre, consistently offering South African audiences only the very best in local and international theatre. As the very first appointed Artistic Director, it is my great honour and privilege to announce our first full season – 10 Years and Counting. 2020 sees The Fugard presenting an exciting range of productions including works by two South African icons, three South African Premieres of International productions as well as brand new works from two of our country’s leading playwrights. 2020 also brings The Fugard’s very first Shakespeare production, Hamlet to its main stage. Added to this, I am 2018 Shakespeare in Love thrilled to announce the biggest Bioscope season we have had to date, featuring 48 world-class recorded live titles. 10 years and counting - A time to look back at the astounding body of work The Fugard has produced and an opportunity to look ahead to the future and the continuation of The Fugard Theatre’s legacy. I hope that you will be a part of this legacy, and join us on our journey celebrating the vital role of theatre in our country, as well as the beauty of storytelling and our shared common humanity. Message from the Theatre Manager Over the past ten years, The Fugard has become my second home, and being part and parcel of its growth over the years has been incredibly fulfilling and humbling. Working with a deeply passionate team has been a particular highlight for me. Watching the building grow both physically and in scale and quality of productions continues to make me deeply proud to be a part of this machine. What Eric Abraham has enabled, and continues to enable, through The Fugard Theatre is unwavering, and is unlike anything I have experienced or seen in South African Theatre. His constant care and support, not only financially, but in kindness, common humanity and humility has been a beacon of endless possibility. 2017 King Kong I am humbled every day by what Eric has made possible and how that possibility continues to grow and empower not only The Fugard staff, but every patron and performer who walks through The Fugard’s doors. I am so very excited for our 2020 season, the first season ever curated by our newly appointed and first Artistic Director Greg Karvellas whose artistic vision I find hugely exciting and refreshing.
