CHIEF’S PAGE General MM Naravane, COAS reviewed the impressive Passing Out Parade (POP) of Indian Military Academy, Dehradun on 13 June 2020. A strength of 423 Gentleman Cadets (GCs) of 146 Regular & 129 TGC course including 90 from nine friendly foreign countries were commissioned into the Army. Due to COVID-19 related constraints, the parade was organised keeping in mind social distancing and other norms, because of which the parents could not attend. Hence the POP was broadcast live on YouTube and TV for the benefit of cadets' guardians & other citizens. Addressing the parents of the GCs, who missed out on the ceremony, General Naravane said "Till yesterday they (gentleman cadets) were your children but from tomorrow they will be ours." General MM Naravane, COAS accompanied by Northern Army Commander visited forward areas in Eastern Ladakh from 23-25 June 2020. The COAS reviewed operational situation on the ground, interacted with injured soldiers at General Hospital Leh, commended the troops for their high morale and exhorted them to continue working with zeal and enthusiasm. In focus Lieutenant General Manoj Pande took over as the 15th Commander- in-Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command (CINCAN) on 01 June 2020. An alumni of National Defence Academy, he was commissioned in December 1982 in the Corps of Engineers. The General Officer commanded an Engineer Regiment during Operation PARAKRAM in J & K, along the Line of Control, an Engineer Brigade in the Western Theatre, Infantry Brigade along Line of Control in J & K, Mountain Division in Western Ladakh and Gajraj Corps, deployed along the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Command. The General Officer is a graduate of Staff College, Camberley (United Kingdom) and has attended the Higher Command and National Defence College courses. His staff exposures include Brigade Major of a Mountain Brigade in the North East, AMS in Military Secretary’s Branch, Colonel Q of a Mountain Division in High Altitude Area and Brigadier General Staff (Operations) at HQ Eastern Command. The General Officer has served C in C, Andaman & Nicobar as Chief Engineer in the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Command Eritrea. He has also tenanted the appointments of Additional Director General in the MO Directorate at Army Headquarters and Chief of Staff Headquarters Southern Command. In his last appointment, he was Director General Discipline, Ceremonial & Welfare at Army Headquarters. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA 2020 Yoga Day was celebrated by troops at posts & Army personnel under transit at designated remote locations of Poonch & Rajouri districts with quarantine centres performing Yoga. zeal & fervour while adhering to social distancing norms amidst COVID-19. DHRUVA WARRIORS – NORTH STAR CREST The Command Formation Sign consists of ‘Dhruva’ or the ‘North Star’ in the centre of Red & Black Command colour stripes. The Dhruva or North Star symbolizes the geographical North of the Command, since it is entrusted with the responsibility of safe guarding the Northern borders of our Country. North Star draws its inspiration from Indian mythology where ‘Dhruva Star’ always denotes courage, steadfastness in battle and righteous cause. RAISING Northern Command, was raised on 17 June 1972, initially with two Corps on its ORBAT, which was later increased to three Corps, to meet the external & internal security needs. The Command is responsible for an extremely sensitive region of the country which includes a major portion of the UTs of J&K and Ladakh. Its first GOC-in-C was Lieutenant General PS Bhagat, VC, PVSM. The present GOC-in-C, Lieutenant General YK Joshi, UYSM, AVSM, VrC, SM assumed command on 01 February 2020. Northern Command has been in operational mode since its very inception, having seen a large number of high and low intensity ops. Today, Northern Command is at the forefront of the Nation’s Command Investiture efforts to counter the most serious challenge to its security, the Ceremony. The Ladakh Scouts Team was flagged in on 30 September 2019 at Leh after successfully summiting Mount Mamostong Kangri (7516m), overcoming challenging conditions with skill, tenacity and resolve. Motorcycle Expedition Team was flagged off by GOC, Fire & Fury Corps at Leh in 31 August 2019. The team covered distance of 1450km, negotiating inhospitable terrain & harsh weather. The team was flagged in at Leh on 07 September 2019; successfuly crossing the world’s eight highest mountain passes at altitudes upto 19300ft. NATION BUILDING Sadbhavna, a humane initiative undertaken by the IA in J&K to address the aspirations of the local populace, is focused on improvement of the core social indices of Education, Women, Youth Empowerment & Health care with simultaneous thrust on capacity building through implementation of Community/ Infrastructure development projects. The Army Goodwill Schools, MILITARY DIPLOMACY Super Thirty, Super Fifty, and CBT are some of the success stories. Sports & adventure 30th Senior National Fencing Championship 2019-20 was conducted by the Delhi Association for Fencing at New Delhi from 11 to 14 February 2020. Eight Fencers of Corps of EME Fencing team participated in the championship. Craftsman G N Yadav in Sabre category and Craftsman Sumit Bhalotia in Epee category won the Gold Medal & Bronze Medal respectively. 72nd Men Senior National Weightlifting Championship 2019-20 was conducted at Kolkata, West Bengal from 02 to 07 February 2020. Six weightlifters and one coach of Corps of EME Weightlifting team had participated in the championship representing a state team. Havildar Jagdish Vishwakarma won the Gold Medal in inter-state category (96Kg) and a Silver Medal in the overall championship. Third Khelo India Youth Games 2020 were conducted at Guwahati, Assam. The event witnessed 20 national level multidisciplinary grassroot games played among the age groups of under-17 and under-21 categories. In weightlifting, Recruit Gulap Gogoi of Indian Army representing Assam in 81 Kg category and Recruit Zakhuma representing Mizoram in 61 Kg category, won first & fourth positions respectively. Regimental celebrations Army Educational Corps (AEC) celebrated its 100th Corps Day on 01 June 2020. Army Educational Corps was raised on 01 June, 1947 at Pachmarhi. The history of AEC dates back to 1944 when Sir Claude Auchinleck proposed the formation of a self contained organisation to look after the educational training of the Indian troops. Today the Corps is playing pivotal role in meeting aspirations of serving and retired soldiers of Indian Army in various aspects such as higher education through IGNOU Army Education Project, Bachelor of Education Course for the dependents of Defence personnel, Map Craft Training with modern navigation skills, Management of Military and Sainik Schools, Foreign/ Regional Languages Training, Personality Development Training and Military Music Training. Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering, Secunderabad has been declared the winner of prestigious ‘Golden Peacock National Training Award’ (GPNTA)for the year 2020 by an awards jury under the chairmanship of Justice M.N. Venkatachariah, former Chief Justice of India. GPNTA is an award instituted by the Institute of Directors in 1998 to identify & recognize excellence in training practices in an organization as a whole. It is the most prestigious award for training at the National level which has recognized MCEME for achieving and maintaining excellence in the field of training. Incidentally MCEME has won this award five times in the past with the last one being in the year 2015. White Knight Corps commemorated its 49th Raising Day on 01 June 2020. Lieutenant General Harsha Gupta, General Officer Commanding (GOC), White Knight Corps, complemented all ranks for their outstanding contribution in maintaining vigil on the Line of Control and ensuring peace & tranquility in the hinterland. The GOC paid floral tributes to the fallen soldiers at ‘Ashwamedh Shaurya Sthal’ in Nagrota Military Station, with full military honours. White Knight Corps was raised on 01 June 1972 and is operationally committed in pursuit of guarding and maintaining the sanctity of the Line of Control and combating terrorism. It is also actively involved in various empowerment programmes for the Awam in the region. The GOC exhorted all ranks of White Knight Corps to carry out the assigned tasks in a professional manner and to always keep the flag of the formation flying high.
