Festival Mainstage “For a quarter-century, Benny Green has been deemed one of the most technically superb jazz pianists of his generation.” New York Daily News Since emerging under the tutelage of Betty Carter, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard and Ray Brown in the early 1980s, pianist Benny Green truly possesses the history of jazz at his fingertips. Hailed as perhaps the most exciting hard-swinging, hard-bop pianist to ever emerge from Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Benny Green has become a highly regarded bandleader whose efforts to expand upon the language of the classic jazz canon have placed him not only among the best interpreters, but also among the vanguard of musicians keeping jazz’s evolution going. Born in New York in 1963, Benny Green grew up in Berkeley, California, and began classical piano studies at the age of seven. Influenced by his father, a tenor saxophonist, his attention soon turned to jazz: “I began trying to improvise on the piano, imitating the records I’d been hearing from my father’s collection, which included a lot of Monk and Bird… it was a gradual process of teaching myself ”. Benny never looked back and never stopped learning as his blossoming talents, supported by mentors such as Walter Bishop, Jr. and others, plus his love for the music, propelled him to the upper strata of jazz luminaries. Benny Green Trio Today, it can be argued that nobody plays straight- ahead modern jazz piano with more swinging joy and Presented by JazzYYC & Studio Bell, home of finesse than Benny Green. You can hear his absolute the National Music Centre mastery of the artform on a gamut of recordings Friday June 14 including his newest release; Then And Now on Sunnyside Records (his 20th album as leader), or @ 8PM one of his other fine albums such as Greens and Studio Bell - 850 4 St SE Kaleidoscope on Blue Note, or Telarc’s Naturally with bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Russell Ticket $49 Student $39 Malone, as well as his scores of records with top artists like Diana Krall, Freddie Hubbard and Milt Jackson. Presented by JazzYYC & Brubeck Brothers Quartet Presented by JazzYYC & Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre Saturday June 15 @ 8PM Studio Bell - 850 4 St SE Ticket $49 Student $39 Celebrating 60 Years of Dave Brubeck’s Time Out Chris Brubeck and Dan Brubeck have been making music together practically all of their lives. Drummer Dan and bassist, trombonist, and composer Chris cut their first record together in 1966 – more than half a century ago. They’ve subsequently played a variety of styles in a number of different groups, as well as with their father, jazz giant Dave Brubeck, and with their own Brubeck Brothers Quartet (“BBQ”). With Dan and Chris as the foundation, guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb complete this dynamic quartet. Although the quartet’s style is rooted in straight-ahead jazz, its concerts reveal an inherent ability to explore and play odd time signatures while naturally integrating the influences of funk, blues and world music. The group’s creativity, technique and improvisation can be heard in their uncompromising music, which reflects their dedication to melody, rhythm, culture and the spontaneous spirit of jazz. The Brubeck Brothers Quartet’s most recent CD TimeLine, released in 2018, celebrated the 60th anniversary of Dave Brubeck’s historic 1958 State Department Tour. The recording includes freshly rearranged tunes written by Dave inspired by his 1958 tour as well as compelling new originals by members of the “BBQ”. The group’s visit to JazzYYC will commemorate the 60th anniversary of one of Chris Brubeck the most iconic jazz albums of all time; Time Out by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Bass & Trombone Considered one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, it was the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat Dan Brubeck or 3/4 waltz time. “Blue Rondo a la Turk”, inspired by the quartet’s visit to Istanbul, Drums and “Take Five” are just two of the now classic Dave Brubeck compositions. It is Mike DeMicco sophisticated music, which lends itself to cerebral appreciation, yet never stops Guitar swinging. Countless other musicians built on its pioneering experiments, yet it Chuck Lamb is amazingly accessible for all its advanced thinking, a rare feat in any art form. Piano Expect to hear BBQ play a couple of the classic tunes from this album.
