C E L E B R AT E SC IE NC E T H I S AU G U ST W I T H NAT I ON A L S C IE N C E W E E K I N WA As Western Australia celebrates National Science Week in 2018, we do so with a clear focus on promoting the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to diversify WA’s economy and prepare our community for the jobs of the future. As Minister for Science, I am proud of Western Australia’s many achievements in STEM research and development – from preserving biodiversity hotspots, to enhancing world food security and developing cures for diseases. Advancements in knowledge and technology enable us to innovate and drive economic growth, unlocking new jobs and opportunities. In this increasingly technology-rich and innovative economy, the nature of work is rapidly changing. Around 75% of the fastest growing occupations require STEM skills, and higher order skills developed through STEM education, such as problem solving and critical thinking, will be increasingly important for all future jobs. To help Western Australia prepare for the future and make informed decisions, the McGowan Government has developed goals and pillars for a State STEM Strategy to engage the entire community. This strategy works not only to prepare our kids for the jobs of the future, but to reskill our existing workforce for the changing nature of jobs. National Science Week is a great occasion for everyone to get involved, particularly our children and their parents and teachers. Perceptions of STEM and career aspirations are shaped from a young age, and National Science Week provides opportunities to foster children’s natural curiosity and ignite their interest in the world around them. This year I am delighted to see there are many events planned across the Western Australian community as part of National Science Week, spanning topics such as climate science and adaptation, dark matter and maritime archaeology. Events are taking place right across the community, from parks and museums, through schools and universities, to pubs and cafes, so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. I encourage all Western Australians to attend a National Science Week event and experience first-hand the wonder of science and technology, the talent of our local scientists and how science relates to our everyday lives. FE AT URE E X HIBIT IO N GAME CHA NGE RS & CHANGE MA KE RS The school theme for National Science Week in 2018 is Game Changers and Change Makers. This could refer to individuals, teams, technologies or ideas – what does it suggest to you? In developing the theme and the teaching resource book we took inspiration from three significant celebrations in 2018: 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (genetic engineering, biotechnologies, prosthetics, bionics, genetic modification, brain enhancement and ethics) 40th anniversary of the birth of the first IVF baby (genetic engineering, biotechnology, nanotechnology) International Year of the Reef (coral reefs and the scientists who study them) FROM FRANKENSTEIN TO GENETIC ENGINEERING 2018 marks the 200th Anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, a story that changed the game of not only literature but also helped inspire scientists to think about the possibilities of what we can do. From the inspirations of this book, science has progressed into the fields of genetic engineering, biotechnology, and biomedical research and opportunities. Here in WA we have some amazing scientists working in this field, including Nobel Laureates Professor Barry Marshall and Professor Robin Warren, who discovered that stomach ulcers were actually caused by bacteria (called Helicobacter pylori), not stress as was previously thought. The inventive and innovative Professor Fiona Wood won the Australian of the Year award in 2005 for pioneering ‘spray on skin’, helping burns victims heal without scarring. Even last year, the Premier’s Science Award in WA was presented to Professor Christobel Saunders for her work in improving treatments and patient care in breast cancer. Be inspired by the talent we have here in WA and find your science this National Science Week!
