T HE F IRST L ESSON 2 Samuel 11:1-15 Liz Cramton, Lector

The Lector says A reading from the Book of the prophet Samuel.

In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab with his officers and
all Israel with him; they ravaged the Ammonites, and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at
   Jerusalem.

It happened, late one afternoon, when David rose from his couch and was walking about on the
roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; the woman was very
beautiful. David sent someone to inquire about the woman. It was reported, “This is Bathsheba
daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” So David sent messengers to get her, and she
came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she was purifying herself after her period.) Then she
returned to her house. The woman conceived; and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.”
So David sent word to Joab, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” And Joab sent Uriah to David. When Uriah
came to him, David asked how Joab and the people fared, and how the war was going. Then David
said to Uriah, “Go down to your house, and wash your feet.” Uriah went out of the king’s house,
and there followed him a present from the king. But Uriah slept at the entrance of the king’s house
with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. When they told David, “Uriah
did not go down to his house,” David said to Uriah, “You have just come from a journey. Why did
you not go down to your house?” Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah remain in
booths; and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field; shall I then go
to my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will
not do such a thing.” Then David said to Uriah, “Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will send
you back.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day. On the next day, David invited him to eat and
drink in his presence and made him drunk; and in the evening he went out to lie on his couch with
the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house.

In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. In the letter he wrote,
“Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, so that he may
   be struck down and die.”

T HE S ECOND L ESSON Ephesians 3:14-21

The Lector says A reading from the letter of Paul to the Ephesians.

I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name.
I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your
inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith,
as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend,
with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of
Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to
him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can
ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and
   ever. Amen.

Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. A large crowd kept
following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. Jesus went up the
mountain and sat down there with his disciples. Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was
near. When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where
are we to buy bread for these people to eat?” He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he
was going to do. Philip answered him, “Six months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each of
them to get a little.” One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, “There is a
boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?” Jesus
said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat
down, about five thousand in all. Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he
distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. When they
were satisfied, he told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be
lost.” So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those
who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. When the people saw the sign that he had done, they
began to say, “This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.”

When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he
withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, got into a boat, and started across the sea
to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea became rough
because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw
Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. But he said to them, “It
is I; do not be afraid.” Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat
reached the land toward which they were going.

Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord.
People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Alleluia is repeated at the conclusion of the Gospel reading.

The congregation is seated for the Sermon.

T HE S ERMON The Rev. Sam Portaro, Theologian-in-Residence

The congregation stands for the Creed and the Prayers.

T HE N ICENE C REED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
    maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
    eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
    true God from true God,
    begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
   For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day, he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

   Lord, in your mercy,
   Hear our prayer.

Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may
honor one another and serve the common good.
   Lord, in your mercy,
   Hear our prayer.

Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in
the service of others and to your honor and glory.
   Lord, in your mercy,
   Hear our prayer.

Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and
love one another as he loves us.
   Lord, in your mercy,
   Hear our prayer.

Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courage and hope in their
troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation.

We lift up all those in our community in need of healing, wholeness, and relief from pain. We pray for
Bob, Brian, Carey, Lee, Patty, Laura, Annie, Louis, Petra, Connor, the Brown Family, Duane, Bill, Matt,

   Paula Clark.

We invite your additional prayers, silently or aloud.

   Lord, in your mercy,

   We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
   For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Eucharistic Prayer B

The Congregation stands. The Celebrant faces them and says
             The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant Lift up your hearts.
People We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People It is right to give God thanks and praise.

The Celebrant proceeds
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father
Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord; who on the first day of
the week overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of
everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with
all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your name:

S ANCTUS & B ENEDICTUS QUI VENIT Community Mass Richard Proulx

The Congregation stands or kneels. The Celebrant continues
We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in
creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and
above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be
incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have
delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of
error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks
to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given
for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he
had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new
Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do
this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

              We remember his death,
People We proclaim his resurrection,
              We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from
your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon
these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new
Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being
sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ,
and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting
heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation,
the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours,
Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

THE LORD’S PRAYER said by all

The Celebrant says
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven,
      hallowed be thy Name,
      thy kingdom come,
      thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
   And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
      but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
      for ever and ever. Amen.
THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept.

The Celebrant may say the following:
              Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Richard Popplewell (1935-2016) was the Organist-Choirmaster at the Chapel Royal, London, from 1979-
2000. He studied at the Royal College of Music, and was Organ Scholar at King’s College Chapel,
Cambridge, then Assistant Organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral. He wrote five choral anthems and several
works for organ.

Clifford Harker (1912-1999) was Organist-Choirmaster at Bristol Cathedral from 1949-1983, where he
upheld the centuries long tradition of musical excellence. A student of Sir Malcolm Sargent and Ralph
Vaughan Williams at the Royal College of Music, his many choral works follow in the tradition of Elgar,
Vaughan Williams, and his contemporaries. His Introit motet, set to a text of Bishop R. Heber, is elegantly
crafted with beautiful and shifting harmony.

Jean Langlais (1907-1988) was the student of and succeeded Charles Tournemire as Organiste-
Titulaire of Ste-Clothilde, Paris. As well as being the Titulaire at Ste-Clothilde, he was an extraordinary
and beloved teacher, acclaimed concert artist, and prolific composer. His works for organ, much like his
teacher’s, are improvisatory, often based on plainchant melodies. His customary brilliance and technical
demands are on full display in Fête, a fiery and splendid work, improvisatory in nature.

We are so happy to be singing together again! After many months of silence, our voices are raised in
united song. It is a great joy to have members of our Choir singing anthems each Sunday.
Summer choral music is not included in our annual budget but is supported by the generosity of
parishioners and friends. We invite you, once again, to support our choral music by contributing to our
summer music fund.
Your gift of $350 supports one Sunday’s quartet of singers, keeping our services vibrant during the
summer months with anthems, solos, and service music.
You can contribute online at https://onrealm.org/SaintC/give/summermusic
or by sending a check to the parish office marked: SUMMER MUSIC.
We thank you for your gracious support of our choral music and look forward to hearing the beautiful
voices of our Choir each Sunday.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEEDED
Is a new ministry with Children calling you? We're now organizing children's ministers and teachers for
the fall. If you're feeling called, we can work with you to find the right spot and commitment level for
you. Mr. Will loves chatting with adults, since baby Reese isn't a great conversationalist, yet. So, drop him
a line at will@saintc.org.

BEACH SUNDAYS RETURN THIS SUMMER – JOIN THIS SUNDAY!
Come enjoying our beautiful lakefront with friends from church! All parishioners are invited to follow the
banner after church on July 25th and August 29th (weather permitting). We'll depart from church around
12:15 and walk to the North Avenue Beach with some cold drinks to enjoy the sand and sun together.
STEWARDSHIP –STRENGTHENING OUR TIES
HAVE YOU MADE YOUR ANNUAL 2021 PLEDGE?
If not, there's still time to be a part of the 2021 giving that helps St. Chrys. do all that we do throughout
the year. Thank you for all the annual gift commitments received so far to bring us to 94% of the
stewardship goal! Please consider submitting a pledge for the 2021 year or give directly to pledge 2021 to
help us get to the final 6%. We are so close to meeting the goal! It's our community who make it all
possible! Every contribution makes a difference!

Thank you for being a part of this community and helping in Strengthening Our Ties!

2021-2022 PROGRAM YEAR KICKOFF
INVOKING GRACE – 2021-2022 PROGRAM YEAR

Mark your calendars for the 2021-2022 Church & Day School Program Year Kickoff. The Program Year
kickoffs on September 12th at the new service time of 10AM with Holy Eucharist, Choirs, Organ, and a
Blessing of Backpacks for all children returning to school. Following the 10AM service, please join in the
Church Courtyard from 11AM-1PM to prepare for a new season of grace and growth. We will celebrate the
depth and diversity of all that St. Chrysostom’s has to offer; there will be activities for adults and children
alike, refreshments to enjoy, performances by our musicians, opportunities to tour our recently renovated
facilities, and the time and space to connect (or reconnect!) with your St. Chrysostom’s family. Most
importantly, our programs and ministries will be represented at this event, and you will have the chance to
learn more about the many opportunities to become more involved in the life of our parish. If you’ve always
wondered what it’s like to be a part of a particular ministry or wanted to get more involved but didn’t know
how, you’ll have the chance to talk with people who can help you to do just that! These are some of the
many paths that we at St. Chrysostom’s can take to live into our program-year theme of “Invoking Grace”
– by actively seeking out ways, both old and new, by which we can experience and share God’s grace with
one another as a community of faith. This will be a great time for all, but we need YOU to make it the best
event it can be – stay tuned for more details and we look forward to seeing all our church and day school
families on September 12!

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE DIOCESE OF CHICAGO
THE REV. CANON PAULA E. CLARK
                                                                   on August 28
Bishop-elect Clark to Be Consecrated, Seated

Last month Presiding Bishop Michael Curry announced that after consultation with
Bishop-elect Paula Clark and the Rev. Anne B. Jolly, president of the Standing
Committee, he has rescheduled the bishop-elect’s ordination, consecration and
seating for August 28 at St. James Cathedral. Bishop Curry will attend in person and
                               serve as the chief consecrator.

More information about the event, including COVID-19 protocols, will be available
in the coming weeks.

Please keep Bishop-elect Clark and her family in your prayers as she continues to heal. Cards may be sent to 65 E.
Huron, Chicago, IL 60611. To facilitate her rest and recovery, please do not call or visit her for any reason.

With the rescheduling of the ordination, St. Chrysostom’s is working with the diocese on a date for the Bishop to
visit our church.
