Dear Cathedralites
Welcome in to 2021!

One of the favourite times I have is when I go and buy a diary for the following year.
I usually do it in August the previous year and all too soon I am opening the pages of
the brand new diary of the brand new year. What a thrill it is for us to enter 2021.
May the Lord bless you this year as never before.

Today we are concentrating on the bible reading concerning the three Magi. I want to
share some of the new thoughts; the new wisdom that the world is embracing to the
detriment I believe of human wellness. Even in New Testament times was a group
called the Gnostics (gnostic means knowledge) and they were always coming out with
brand new ideas about what was the truth regarding Christianity. These mistruths
were once called heresies. However, such words are now deemed to be too offensive
to use!

One of the modern-day heresies is that of original goodness espoused by the populist
Bishop Spong about 25 years ago. For reasons only known to himself he did not like
the idea of original sin so he replaced it with the concept of original goodness. This is
completely contrary to the core of Christianity. However, there are many people out
there willing to take on these latest so-called truths called Gnosticism.

The Christmas tree festival has been fantastic, and it comes to an end with our switch
off service Sunday 17th January. While it will be sad to see the end of the festival it
will certainly make looking up at the Cathedral every night a lot quicker though a lot
more boring! Thank you so much to the Christmas tree festival organisers for a stun-
ning effort.

For the first few months of next year, I plan to preach through the New Testament
Epistles but in chronological order. So, to this end, can I ask you all to visit a second-
hand bookshop between now and then and buy a second-hand bible. I want you to
bring it each Sunday that I preach through the chronological Epistle series so that you
can mark which of the Epistles was written in which particular order. I will be relying
on the Revd. Ren Kempthorne to give me his latest thoughts on the accepted
historical account of the chronological order of the Epistles. Some say James is first,
other say Thessalonians, some say Corinthians were first.
CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON
It is my intention to end my tenure with you before my retirement by concentrating on
the Scriptures as for me they are the essence of life and wisdom.

For those of you camping, I hope your tents don’t leak. For those caravanning, I hope
your wheels stay on as you enjoy seeing picturesque New Zealand for the next few
weeks.

Have a grand time.

In His service,
Mike

1      O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness;
       bow down before him, his glory proclaim;
       with gold of obedience, and incense of lowliness,
       kneel and adore him: the Lord is his name.
2 Low at his feet lay thy burden of carefulness:
       high on his heart he will bear it for thee,
       comfort thy sorrows, and answer thy prayerfulness,
       guiding thy steps as may best for thee be.
3 Fear not to enter his courts in the slenderness
       of the poor wealth thou wouldst reckon on thine:
       truth in its beauty, and love in its tenderness,
       these are the offerings to lay on his shrine.
4 These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness,
       he will accept for the name that is dear;
       mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness,
       trust for our trembling and hope for our fear.
5      O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness;
       bow down before him, his glory proclaim;
       with gold of obedience, and incense of lowliness,
       kneel and adore him: the Lord is his name.

God has promised forgiveness to all who truly repent, turn to Christ in faith and are
themselves forgiving. In silence we call to mind our sins.

Let us confess our sins.

 All Merciful God, we have sinned in what we have thought and said,
       In the wrong we have done and in the good we have not done.
       We have sinned in ignorance: we have sinned in weakness: we have
       sinned through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry. We repent
       and turn to you. Forgive us, for our Saviour Christ’s sake, and renew our
       lives to the glory of your name. Amen.
 The Absolution is pronounced by the Dean

 Through the cross of Christ, God have mercy on you, pardon you and set you free.
 Know that you are forgiven and be at peace. God strengthen you in all goodness and
 keep you in life eternal. Amen.

 We conclude our prayers by singing the Lord’s Prayer
 Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be
 done, on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, forgive us our sins
 as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver

 We stand to affirm our faith in the words of the Apostle’s Creed

 All I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
              I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was
              conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered
              under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried;
              He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again;
              He ascended into Heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father,
              and will come again to judge the living and the dead.
              I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion
              of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
              and the life everlasting. Amen

ated all things from the beginning and formed us in your own image; male and female
you created us.
                                             10
In Him we see You, the eternal God, revealing Your glory in our flesh, for He is the
light of the nations who illuminates our darkness.
When we sinned and turned away you called us back to yourself and gave your Son to
share our human nature. By his death on the cross, He made the one perfect sacrifice for
the sin of the world and freed us from the bondage of sin. You raised him to life triumphant
over death: you exalted him in glory. In him you have made us a holy people by sending
upon us your holy and lifegiving Spirit.
Therefore, with the faithful who rest in him, with angels and archangels and all the
company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you
and singing:

Choir Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of power and might,
                  Heaven and earth are full of your glory,
                  Hosannah in the highest.
                  Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord.
                  Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest.
Please kneel or be seated
Celebrant All glory and thanksgiving to you, Holy Father, on the night before he died
            your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when He had given you thanks,
            He broke it, gave it to His disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body
            which is given for you; do this to remember me.

After supper He took the cup; when He had given you thanks, He gave it to them and
said: Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you
and for many for the forgiveness of sins; do this as often as you drink it, to
remember me.
All sing Glory to you Lord Christ, your death we show forth,
             your resurrection we proclaim, your coming we await. Amen.
             Come Lord Jesus.
The Celebrant continues
 Therefore, loving God, recalling your great goodness to us in Christ, his suffering and
 death, his resurrection and ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate
 our redemption with this bread of life and this cup of salvation. Accept our sacrifice of
 praise and thanksgiving which we offer through Christ our great high priest. Send your
 Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine which we receive may be to us the body
 and blood of Christ, and that we, filled with the Spirit’s grace and power may be renewed
 for the service of your kingdom. United in Christ with all who stand before you in earth
 and heaven, we worship you, O God, in songs of everlasting praise.
 All sing Blessing honour and glory be yours, here and everywhere.
              Now and forever. Amen.

                                 The Communion
Celebrant We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
                                             11
All We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread.

 We do not presume to come to your holy table, merciful Lord, trusting in our
 own righteousness, but in your great mercy. We are not worthy even to gather
 the crumbs from under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is
 always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the body of
 your dear Son, Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell
 in him and he in us. Amen.

The choir sings the Agnus Dei as those in the sanctuary receive communion

                                          The Invitation
The Celebrant invites the people saying

Draw near and receive the body and blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ in
remembrance that he died for us. Let us feed on him in our hearts by faith with
thanksgiving.

            The congregation is invited to receive communion at the High Altar.
              Please come up the centre aisle and return by the side aisles.
                 Wafers will be offered. Gluten free available on request.
              The common cup is offered, along with grape juice in thimbles.

                                  Prayer after Communion
Celebrant Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far
                      off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he
                      declared your love, gave us grace and opened the gate of glory. May
                      we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink His cup
                      bring life to others, we whom the Spirit lights give life to the world.
All Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all
                      your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your
                      name. Amen.

Minister of Liturgy Please stand to sing our final Hymn CP 83

1 As with gladness men of old
      did the guiding star behold,
      as with joy they hailed its light,
      leading onward, beaming bright;
      so, most gracious Lord, may we
      evermore be led to Thee.

                                                12
2 As with joyful steps they sped,
      Saviour, to thy lowly bed,
      there to bend the knee before
      Thee whom heaven and earth adore;
      So, may we with willing feet
      ever seek Thy mercy-seat.

3 As they offered gifts most rare
      at thy cradle rude and bare,
      so may we with holy joy,
      pure and free from sin's alloy,
      all our costliest treasures bring,
      Christ, to Thee our heavenly King.

4     Holy Jesus, every day
      keep us in the narrow way,
      and, when earthly things are past,
      bring our ransomed souls at last
      where they need no star to guide,
      where no clouds Thy glory hide.

5 In the heavenly country bright
      need they no created light;
      Thou its light, its joy, its crown,
      Thou its sun which goes not down;
      therefore, ever may we sing
      alleluias to our King.

Isaiah 60:1-9
1
  Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon
you. 2 For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but
the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. 3 Nations shall
come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. 4 Lift up your eyes
and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come
from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses’ arms. 5 Then
you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abun-
dance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to
you. 6 A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and
Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankin-
cense, and shall proclaim the praise of the LORD. 7 All the flocks of Kedar shall be
gathered to you, the rams of Nebaioth shall minister to you; they shall be accepta-
ble on my altar, and I will glorify my glorious house. 8 Who are these that fly like a
cloud, and like doves to their windows? 9 For the coastlands shall wait for me, the
ships of Tarshish first, to bring your children from far away, their silver and gold
with them, for the name of the LORD your God, and for the Holy One of Israel,
because he has glorified you.

John 2:1-11
1
 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus
was there. 2 Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When
the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ 4 And
Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has
not yet come.’ 5 His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ 6 Now
standing there were six stone water-jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each
holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to them, ‘Fill the jars with water.’ And
they filled them up to the brim. 8 He said to them, ‘Now draw some out, and take it
to the chief steward.’ So they took it. 9 When the steward tasted the water that had
become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had
drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10 and said to him,
‘Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests
have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.’ 11 Jesus did this,
the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples
believed in him.

Meditation is not something new. Rather it is
central to the Christian experience and deeply
rooted in Christian tradition. Meditation, also
known as contemplative prayer, is the prayer of
silence and listening.
        This is the aim given by the Psalmist
         “Be still and know that I am God.”
   All are welcome to join us for this ecumenical
 prayer- a time of silence, stillness and reflection.
 Come and join our small, friendly community of
 Christian meditators. It is suitable for everyone,
                   and easy to learn.

Tangmalangaloo, John O’Brien

The bishop sat in lordly state and purple cap sublime,
And galvanized the old bush church at Confirmation time.
And all the kids were mustered up from fifty miles around,
With Sunday clothes, and staring eyes, and ignorance profound.
Now was it fate, or was it grace, whereby they yarded too
An overgrown two-story lad from Tangmalangaloo?
A hefty son of virgin soil, where nature has her fling,
And grows the trefoil three feet high and mats it in the spring;
Where mighty hills uplift their heads to pierce the welkin’s rim,
And threes spout up a hundred feet before they shoot a limb;
There everything is big and grand, and men are giants too-
But Christian Knowledge wilts, alas, at Tangmalangaloo.
The bishop summed the youngsters up, as bishops only can;
He cast a searching glace around, then fixed upon his man.
But glum and dumb and undismayed through every bout he sat;
He seemed to think that he was there, but wasn’t sure of that.
The bishop gave a scornful look, as bishops sometimes do,
And glared right through the pagan in from Tangmalangaloo.
‘Come, tell me, boy,’ his lordship said in crushing tones severe,
‘Come, tell me why is Christmas Day the greatest of the year?
How is it that around the world we celebrate that day
And send a name upon a card to those who’re far away?
Why is it wandering one return with smiles and greetings, too?’
 a squall of knowledge hit the lad from Tangmalangaloo.
He gave a lurch which set-a-shake the vases on the shelf,
He knocked the benches all askew, up-ending of himself.
And oh, how please his lordship was, and how he smiled to say,
‘That’s good, my boy. Come, tell me now; and what is Christmas Day?’
The ready answer bared a fact no bishop ever knew-
‘It’s the day before the races out a Tangmalangaloo.’
