CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON 027 Sunday Bulletin –19th July 2020 + 7th Sunday after Pentecost Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson. Children are welcome at our services. There are toys in the Quiet Room. Please feel free to take this publication away with you. Dear Cathedralites A warm welcome to our clerical canon of this Cathedral, the Rev. Graham O’Brien. Clerical canons are there to provide a link of the Cathedral to the rest of the diocese and the Bishop and also to support the specific ministry that this Cathedral offers and to add a wise and prophetic voice to our vestry meetings. Graham has a PhD and his passion is on science and Christian faith and creation. He has become the Anglican voice and the Christian voice to take on part in the debate at present on voluntary euthanasia and the question of legalisation of marijuana. I am proud to have someone of his calibre amongst our ranks. The Hon. Nick Smith indicated that he needs to change the date for his visit to our Cathedral. I am not sure it is related to the bombshell dropped this week of Todd Muller resigning as leader of the National Party. However, I am delighted that Nick has rescheduled for Sunday 6th September. Our confirmation class starts on Friday 31st of July from 5.00pm – 6.15 pm in the quiet room initially. I look forward to a number of you signing up to do either a refresher course on the basics of Christianity or to put yourself forward for confirmation by Bishop Steve later on. I am writing this letter before heading off to Auckland for the Dean’s conference. I see on the programme we will have some time with Prof. Peter Lineham who I was at university with. Peter has become the go-to person for the media when issues of Christianity in New Zealand are raised so it will be good to catch up with him. We will also be attending the local Jewish synagogue. I am looking forward to meeting up with Margaret Wilson who until recently headed up the Mother’s Union in New Zealand. She has made an amazing contribution. For the celebration tea at her place I will take a pavlova. It always causes a bit of consternation when I walk onto a plane carrying a pav!! It was interesting to be welcoming to our Cathedral folk who first watched our livestreaming during the weeks of shutdown. I look forward to Richard Kempthorne, the former Tasman mayor, preaching on Foundation Sunday in a couple of weeks’ time and the ensuing Foundation Day lunch which will be no doubt be superb. It usually is when it is in the hands of Nicky and Kay Calder, Janet Smith and team. Apparently only 85 tickets are available so please procure yours. Thanks to the Cathedralites who came down to support us as we once again voiced our concern at the possible closure of Nikau House. Some Cathedralites spoke passionately about their experience of depression and the importance of support that
the likes of Nikau House has provided for them. Vestry meeting is on next Tuesday and on Wednesday I will be taking a service at Ernest Rutherford. The music team will be meeting on Thursday and on Thursday evening there will be a meeting hosted by the Barnabas Fund. They have been an amazing voice cham- pioning the cause of suffering Christians overseas. On Friday 24th July I will be taking a service at the Wood and then we shall go to the Back Alley Café at 138 Hardy St. for a celebration lunch. Make sure you register to attend with nurse Judith Fitchett. Isn’t the Nelson sun in the winter magnificent! Walking downtown it is wonderful to see people sitting in the sun having a coffee and a chat with the sun streaming in their eyes, no wind, what a glorious place this is. Have a wonderful week. In His service, Mike Foundation Day Lunch Sunday 2nd August Lunch will be served at the Cathedral at 12 pm Tickets are $10 each, and all profits raised will go towards our Missions commitments. Please see Janet or Nicky to book your seat. We will be limited to 85 people. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. On the third day He rose again; He ascended into Heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. 1 Through all the changing scenes of life, in trouble and in joy, the praises of my God shall still my heart and tongue employ. 2 O magnify the Lord with me, with me exalt his name; when in distress to him I called, he to my rescue came. 3 The hosts of God encamp around the dwellings of the just; deliverance he affords to all who on his succour trust. 4 O make but trial of his love, experience will decide how blest are they, and only they, who in his truth confide! 5 Fear him, ye saints, and you will then have nothing else to fear; make you his service your delight, your wants shall be his care. 6 To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the God whom we adore, be glory, as it was, is now, and shall be evermore. George Smart / Nahum Tate / Nicholas Brady The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant To you, Lord, belongs the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory and the majesty. All All that is in the heavens and the earth is yours, and of your own we give you. Celebrant The Lord is here. All God’s Spirit is with us. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to offer thanks and praise. 10
Celebrant It is right indeed, it is our joy and our salvation, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise through Christ your only Son. You are the source of all life and goodness; through your eternal Word you have created all things from the beginning and formed us in your own image; male and female you created us. When we sinned and turned away you called us back to yourself and gave your Son to share our human nature. By his death on the cross, He made the one perfect sacrifice for the sin of the world and freed us from the bondage of sin. You raised him to life triumphant over death: you exalted him in glory. In him you have made us a holy people by sending upon us your holy and lifegiving Spirit. Therefore, with the faithful who rest in him, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, which wert and art and evermore shalt be. Please kneel or be seated Celebrant All glory and thanksgiving to you, Holy Father, on the night before he died your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when He had given you thanks, He broke it, gave it to His disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me. After supper He took the cup; when He had given you thanks, He gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins; do this as often as you drink it, to remember me. All sing Glory to you Lord Christ, your death we show forth, your resurrection we proclaim, your coming we await. Amen. Come Lord Jesus. The Celebrant continues Therefore, loving God, recalling your great goodness to us in Christ, his suffering and death, his resurrection and ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we cele- brate our redemption with this bread of life and this cup of salvation. Accept our sac- rifice of praise and thanksgiving which we offer through Christ our great high priest. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine which we receive may be to us the body and blood of Christ, and that we, filled with the Spirit’s grace and power may be renewed for the service of your kingdom. United in Christ with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, O God, in songs of everlasting praise. 11
All sing Blessing honour and glory be yours, here and everywhere. Now and forever. Amen. The Communion Celebrant We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread. We do not presume to come to your holy table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your great mercy. We are not worthy even to gather the crumbs from under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the body of your dear Son, Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us. Amen. Thanks to Dmitri van der Colt, a student from Nelson College, for playing during communion. The Invitation The Celebrant invites the people saying Draw near and receive the body and blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ in remembrance that he died for us. Let us feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The congregation is invited to receive communion at the High Altar. Please come up the centre aisle and return by the side aisles. In this post Covid19 period, we are offering the common cup only. Please do not dip the wafer in the common cup. Prayer after Communion Celebrant Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink His cup bring life to others, we whom the Spirit lights give life to the world. All Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name. Amen. The Blessing Notices 12
Minister of Liturgy Please stand to sing our final Hymn CP 609 1 To God be the glory, great things he has done! So loved he the world that he gave us his Son, who yielded his life an atonement for sin and opened the life-gate that all may go in. Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the people rejoice! O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son, and give him the glory! Great things he has done! 2 O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood! To every believer the promise of God! The vilest offender who truly believes, that moment from Jesus forgiveness receives. Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!... 3 Great things he has taught us, great things he has done, and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son; but purer and higher and greater will be our wonder, our rapture, when Jesus we see. Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!... Fanny Crosby / W.H. Doane The Dismissal of the Community Minister of the Liturgy Go now to love and serve the Lord. Go in peace. All Amen. HELP SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES CHANGES by Colleen Kirby I enjoy another day at the beach fossicking along the tideline. I pick up a piece of driftwood sculpted by wind, seawater and sand—scoured, shaped and smoothed into a unique art form. I wonder where it has drifted from to become so worn and torn. Was its original habitat somewhere along the coast or up in the hills? It has undergone and endured hardships and been damaged by exposure to storms, landslides or fire till this final destination. Now it is just one of many disintegrating pieces of debris lying on the sand, an unrecognisable part of an unknown species of tree. It has a beauty, a value, a history having survived through a life of change. It remains a natural treasure. I think on our human lives and how we live each day faced with changes that affect us. During our lifetimes we have been changed— by nurture in families, through growing stages, through altered conditions and traumas which have involved inevitable adjustments. Changed through jobs, careers and interests which may have altered our perspectives and attitudes within different environments. Change is constantly occurring around us and all over the world. Like now, as we endure this unexpected covid- 19 situation where our normal living is disrupted and has unsettled us. Where uncertainty is upsetting and we have to accept other alternatives. Circumstances have changed to alter our perspectives. How are we responding to these changes? Being freed from Lockdown this new life is liberating and brings relief and happiness with renewed connections of closeness and caring. It is a renewal. I recall that old saying- a change is as good as a rest. As we work through changes we can be reformed, transformed and develop into worthy people, progressing and benefiting. We grow on seeking and reaching for goals we aim for and achieving lives that reflect in some ways the fruits and gifts of the Spirit, that we are blessed with. May we continue pursuing the ultimate wholeness along our ever- changing journeys, fortified through prayers and trust in our Creator God — who does not change. 18 18
