CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON Sunday Bulletin –24th January 2021 3rd Sunday of the Epiphany/Te Rātapu Tuarua o te Whakaaturanga 027 Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson. Children are welcome at our services. There are toys in the Quiet Room. + Please feel free to take this publication away with you / leave for re-use. Dear Cathedralites This week’s Bulletin is overshadowed by the news from Dean Mike and Patsy as to the death of their 42 yr old only son Peter last week. Peter died in Sydney from a heart incident, an aortic dissection. It is a terrible thing to deal with, the loss of a child, and our prayers are with Mike, Patsy and their two daughters Lizzie and Sarah as they grieve through this time. Others have offered to help cover the various roles Mike and Patsy have in our Cathedral life. We are grateful to Reverend Graham O'Brien for his leadership at last week’s services and today. As we recall this coming week the conversion of Paul, we are reminded our lives do not always take a course we can plan for. The Christmas Trees have gone, the decorations are down, and the crib has been stowed away until next year. We acknowledge again the hard work of all those involved in the Christmas Tree Festival. We are having trouble with the live streaming at present. Options are being consid- ered as to how we can avoid transmission failures in the future. It would be helpful for the Vestry to know approximately how many people watch live streaming so if you could let the office know by email it would be appreciated. It does not matter if you only watch it occasionally, we would appreciate knowing. The process for the appointment of a new Dean to take over on Mike’s retirement continues. Thank you to those who completed questionnaires. They were collated and read by the nominators. A Parish Profile was updated to advise applicants of the nature of our Parish and issues our Cathedral parish sees ahead. What happens next is the position is advertised in NZ. After that interviews will follow with the Bishop’s team and our Parish nominators. There are already bookings being made for concerts in the Cathedral this year. So long as we are vigilant as a country and keep Covid away in 2021 the Cathedral will once again be available for us to enjoy those. I recently read a book recommended on the Diocesan Website, “Simply Anglican “. After an overview of the history and traditions of our Anglican faith the author has this in his conclusion; “...many have found in the historic Anglican tradition an oasis in the desert, a river in a dry and thirsty land and a treasure hidden among the clam- our of our modern society. It is a great gift and I want to encourage others to discover this beautiful tradition for themselves.” Kind regards THE BBQ AT THE DEANERY Graham Allan (Dean’s Warden) 24 JANUARY HAS BEEN CANCELLED.
Peter Hawke’s Funeral: Friday 29th January at 11am at St Christopher’s Church, Christchurch Those not travelling to Christchurch will be welcome to join together at the Cathedral on Friday 29th at 11am. On the Rock of ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, Thou may'st smile at all Thy foes. 2 See, the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters, and all fear of want remove. Who can faint while such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage: grace which, like the Lord the giver, never fails from age to age? 3 Round each habitation hovering, see the cloud and fire appear for a glory and a covering, showing that the Lord is near. Thus they march, the pillar leading, light by night and shade by day; daily on the manna feeding which he gives them when they pray. 4 Saviour, if of Zion's city I through grace a member am, let the world deride or pity, I will glory in thy name. Fading is the worldling's pleasure, all his boasted pomp and show; solid joys and lasting treasure none but Zion's children know. Cyril Taylor / John Newton 8

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again; He ascended into Heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. 9

Minister of Liturgy We worship God with our tithes and offerings as we sing CP 278 1 Alleluia, sing to Jesus! his the sceptre, his the throne; alleluia, his the triumph, his the victory alone: hark, the songs of peaceful Sion thunder like a mighty flood; Jesus out of every nation hath redeemed us by his blood. 2 Alleluia, not as orphans are we left in sorrow now; alleluia, he is near us, faith believes, nor questions how: though the cloud from sight received him, when the forty days were o’er, shall our hearts forget his promise, ‘I am with you evermore’? 3 Alleluia, bread of angels, Thou on earth our food, our stay; alleluia, here the sinful flee to Thee from day to day: Intercessor, Friend of sinners, earth’s Redeemer, plead for me, where the songs of all the sinless sweep across the crystal sea. 10
4 Alleluia, King eternal, Thee the Lord of lords we own; alleluia, born of Mary, earth thy footstall, heaven thy throne: Thou within the veil hast entered, robed in flesh, our great High Priest; Thou on earth both Priest and Victim in the eucharistic feast. 5 Alleluia, sing to Jesus! his the sceptre, his the throne; alleluia, his the triumph, his the victory alone: hark, the songs of peaceful Sion thunder like a mighty flood; Jesus out of every nation hath redeemed us by his blood. William C. Dix / R.H. Pritchard The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant To you, Lord, belongs the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory and the majesty. All All that is in the heavens and the earth is yours, and of your own we give you. Celebrant The Lord is here. All God’s Spirit is with us. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to offer thanks and praise. Celebrant It is right indeed, it is our joy and our salvation, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise through Christ your only Son. You are the source of all life and goodness; through your eternal Word you have cre- ated all things from the beginning and formed us in your own image; male and female you created us. In Him we see You, the eternal God, revealing Your glory in our flesh, for He is the light of the nations who illuminates our darkness. 11
When we sinned and turned away you called us back to yourself and gave your Son to share our human nature. By his death on the cross, He made the one perfect sacrifice for the sin of the world and freed us from the bondage of sin. You raised him to life triumphant over death: you exalted him in glory. In him you have made us a holy people by sending upon us your holy and lifegiving Spirit. Therefore, with the faithful who rest in him, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, which wert and art and evermore shalt be. Please kneel or be seated Celebrant All glory and thanksgiving to you, Holy Father, on the night before he died your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when He had given you thanks, He broke it, gave it to His disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me. After supper He took the cup; when He had given you thanks, He gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins; do this as often as you drink it, to remember me. All sing Glory to you Lord Christ, your death we show forth, your resurrection we proclaim, your coming we await. Amen. Come Lord Jesus. The Celebrant continues Therefore, loving God, recalling your great goodness to us in Christ, his suffering and death, his resurrection and ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate our redemption with this bread of life and this cup of salvation. Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving which we offer through Christ our great high priest. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine which we receive may be to us the body and blood of Christ, and that we, filled with the Spirit’s grace and power may be renewed for the service of your kingdom. United in Christ with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, O God, in songs of everlasting praise. All sing Blessing honour and glory be yours, here and everywhere. Now and forever. Amen. 12
The Communion Celebrant We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread. We do not presume to come to your holy table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your great mercy. We are not worthy even to gather the crumbs from under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the body of your dear Son, Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us. Amen. Those in the sanctuary receive communion The Invitation The Celebrant invites the people saying Draw near and receive the body and blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ in remembrance that he died for us. Let us feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The congregation is invited to receive communion at the High Altar. Please come up the centre aisle and return by the side aisles. Wafers will be offered. Gluten free available on request. The common cup is offered, along with grape juice in thimbles. Prayer after Communion Celebrant Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink His cup bring life to others, we whom the Spirit lights give life to the world. All Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name. Amen. The Blessing Notices Minister of Liturgy Please stand to sing our final Hymn CP 571 13
1 Soldiers of Christ, arise, and put your armour on, strong in the strength which God supplies, through his eternal Son; 2 Strong in the Lord of Hosts, and in his mighty power: who in the strength of Jesus trusts is more than conqueror. 3 Stand then in his great might, with all his strength endued; and take, to arm you for the fight, the panoply of God. 4 From strength to strength go on, wrestle and fight and pray; tread all the powers of darkness down, and win the well-fought day; 5 That, having all things done, and all your conflicts past, ye may o’ercome, through Christ alone, and stand entire at last. Charles Wesley / W.H. Monk The Dismissal of the Community Minister of Liturgy Go now to love and serve the Lord. Go in peace. All Amen. We go in the name of Christ. 5.30 pm readings Jeremiah 3:21 – 4:2 21 A voice on the bare heights is heard, the plaintive weeping of Israel’s children, because they have perverted their way, they have forgotten the LORD their God: 22 Return, O faithless children, I will heal your faithlessness. ‘Here we come to you; for you are the LORD our God. 23 Truly the hills are a delusion, the orgies on the moun- tains. Truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel. 24 ‘But from our youth the shameful thing has devoured all for which our ancestors had laboured, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. 25 Let us lie down in our shame, and let our dishonour cover us; for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our ancestors, from our youth even to this day; and we have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.’ 4 1 If you return, O Israel, says the LORD, if you return to me, if you remove your abominations from my presence, and do not waver, 2 and if you swear, ‘As the LORD lives!’ in truth, in justice, and in uprightness, then nations shall be blessed by him, and by him they shall boast. Titus 2:1-8, 11-14 2 But as for you, teach what is consistent with sound doctrine. 2 Tell the older men to be temperate, serious, prudent, and sound in faith, in love, and in endurance. 3 Likewise, tell the older women to be reverent in behaviour, not to be slanderers or slaves to drink; they are to teach what is good, 4 so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be self-controlled, chaste, good managers of the household, kind, being submissive to their husbands, so that the word of God may not be discredited. 6 Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. 7 Show yourself in all respects a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, gravity, 8 and sound speech that cannot be censured; then any opponent will be put to shame, having nothing evil to say of us. 11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, 12 training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. 14 He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. 15

NEW YEAR REFLECTION Week’s holiday at Arthur’s Pass was a happy, positive start to a hopeful year after the 2020 times of sadness and anxiety. A visit to the mountain chapel was a special time of silent solitude in peaceful contemplation. At the entrance the sound of the nearby rippling creek welcomed me into this holy place. Inside I sat looking through the A-framed window with its Cross centred in the glass. Outside was the mesmerising Avalanche waterfall flowing down from high up the mountain, through the beech forest. Memories of the past came to mind. The little old pedal organ was still just inside the doorway. I had sometimes played it for holiday services and remembered the graunching sound of the mechanics—-background to the singing voices! I focused on the view beyond and the shadow places in the bush evoked dark days survived throughout Covid. Contrasting flashes of sunlight shone on the sparkling water flow. Birds flitted across the window. My soul sang in pleasure. I thought of the Light of God and was reminded of the song ‘Be still for the presence of the Lord is moving in this place’. This Spiritual Presence pervaded this sanctuary. I felt blessed as I departed out into the open space. All around was fresh greenness— the living colour of our world and I was thankful for all God’s goodness. May we all anticipate a renewed world and enjoy life. Colleen Kirby 21
