JANUARY—DECEMBER 2021 Mississippi Yearbook/Calendar Entry Level Tennis in Mississippi offers “Everyone” a fun time while learning the sport of a lifetime.
Dear Friends and Colleagues, Mission Statement and Core Values I am humbled, honored and privileged to assume the role of President of the Mississippi Tennis Association. It was a mentor and now a good friend who introduced me to tennis at a local public park in Jackson (Dorothy Vest Tennis Center) where I found “To promote and develop the growth of tennis” my love for the game. I have been involved in all levels of the game either as a junior player, high school player, college player and adult league. The one thing that I learned from each was to give USTA Mississippi is committed to: back what I learned to help someone else obtain their goals, which made the team stronger overall. It has led me to continue to volunteer and teach our young players not just tennis but also to provide the discipline and tools to succeed. ► Serving the interests and needs of the tennis communi- ty including adult players, junior players and their par- The year 2021 will be a time for all of us to come together as a whole to inspire our players from all ents, tennis professionals, members organizations, and levels, proving that tennis is not only safe to play but also one of the best sports to help maintain your health. Junior Team Tennis – ARE YOU IN? How does it work? USTA Junior Team Tennis is one of the fastest growing team sports in the country, and allows kids ages 5-18 to form teams with anywhere from 8 to 16 of their friends at the Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced levels. Those that advance out of local play have an opportunity to progress to State, Sectional, and National Championship events. Leagues have the option to use multiple different formats that are a fit with their community, and scoring can be done in a unique way as well. Teams that win the most total games in the entire team match are named the match winner, so remember, in Junior Team Tennis, EVERY GAME COUNTS. 2020 Summer Regional Champions 18 & Under North Regional Champion – New Albany 14 & Under North Regional Champion – New Albany 12 & Under South Regional Champion – Bayou Bluff 14 & Under South Regional Champion – The Club at Township 18 & Under South Regional Champion – Long Beach 2020 Fall State Champions 12 & Under Girls – Bayou Bluff 14 & Under Girls – River Hills 18 & Under Girls – Greenwood Country Club 14 & Under Boys – The Club at Township 18 & Under Boys – Greenwood Country Club 2020 Jr Team Tennis Highlights USTA Jr Team Tennis offers two seasons of Championship play. The Spring and Summer JTT Leagues all across the country play a coed format that includes Boys and Girls singles, Boys and Girls doubles, and a Mixed Doubles match in each team match. Those leagues advance beyond State to Sectional and National Championship play. In the Fall JTT League, boys and girls teams are separate, and team matches consist of 4 singles matches and 2 doubles matches. Due to Covid, State, Sectional, and National Championships were not held in 2020, but Mississippi opted to host smaller Regional Championships instead to provide teams with an opportunity to advance to a championship.

MISSISSIPPI TENNIS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS The Mississippi Tennis Association is proud to announce that the recipients of the 2020 educational scholarships were Hannah Ashley of Greenville and John Martin Fox of Brandon. Now in its twenti- eth year, the program awards scholarships each year to a deserving young man and woman based on their accomplishments in the classroom, on the tennis court, and in the community. Hannah is a graduating senior of Washington School in Greenville. She has achieved a GPA of 4.32 through- out her high school educational career. She has been very busy serving as a cheerleader, track team member and of course a member of the tennis team 8-12th grade. She served as a student council officer throughout high school, Rho Kappa president during her senior year, Key Club, SADD, Mu Alpha Theta, Fellowship of Christian Students and many others accomplishments. She has volunteered for many years assisting with the Ole Miss/State tennis tournament held in Greenville as well as the Delta Cotton Belles tournament. Having turned 18 this year, she was planning to play in her first Ole Miss/State tournament previous to the Covid 19 situation cancelling the event. She has a dream to work with children and will be pursuing this in her collegiate educational career. She has had an opportunity to serve as a tutor to elementary students and considered this a great honor to be approached by the parents of children she would babysit for. This experience solidified her wanting to pursue this in her higher education. It was a very rewarding experience to witness the children’s improvement in their grades. She has approached tennis with a willingness to learn, also realizing during her career that this is a very mental game. Coming from a junior varsity start and meeting the challenges of being an athlete, it took some time to move forward through challenge matches, eventually making it to the varsity squad. Diving into some consistent practice routines, she understood what it was going to take to improve her skills. With the season being cancelled due to the pandemic, she did go out with one of her hardest fought vic- tories in also one of her longest matches of her career. She plans to take the lessons from her tennis career and begin her collegiate experience attending Delta State University in the fall of 2020. John Martin Fox of Brandon has achieved a 4.0 GPA throughout his high school career while being a National Merit Finalist (class of 2020), Phi Theta Kappa through Hinds Community College, Gold Medal Latin Exam three times running, a three year National Junior Classical League member, Mu Eta Sigma National Math Hon- or Society and adding to his tennis time, a Bach Festival piano competition superior ranking from 2012-2015. Achieving the Eagle Scout within his activities he has also been ranked the number 1 in the Mississippi state tennis rankings. Being introduced to tennis at an early age by his mother he continued to take lessons and joined the team competition of high school tennis as early as 6th grade. He dove into USTA sanctioned tourna- ments as a teen with some strong results throughout his career. He has qualified for Southern’s Closed reach- ing a third place finish at the Mississippi Endorsement tournament in 2019. He played USTA junior tennis for several years and held the rank of #1 in the Mississippi 16’s division and #2 in the 18’s division, while compil- ing a record of 99 match wins and 46 losses. He quotes tennis as being his favorite activity throughout his high school career even getting involved in teaching younger kids during the summer. He has taken away the disci- pline, hard work, mental toughness learned through tennis but most important are the friendships made throughout his tennis career. He will be attending Mississippi State University as a Presidential Scholar and a member of the honors college where he will major in accounting and history.
