N A LETTER From the Discourse “On the Palm Branches” by Saint Andrew of Crete FROM OUR PRIESTS Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; blessed is the King of Israel. Let us go together to meet Christ on the Mount of Olives. Today he returns from Bethany and proceeds of his own free will towards his holy and blessed passion, to consummate the mys- tery of our salvation. He who came down from heaven to raise us from the depths of sin, to raise us with himself, we are told in Scripture, above every sovereignty, authority and power, and every other name that can be named, now comes of his own free will to make his journey to Jerusalem. He comes without pomp or ostentation. As the psalmist says: He will not dispute or raise his voice to make it heard in the streets. He will be meek and humble, and he will make his entry in simplicity. Let us run to accompany him as he hastens towards his passion, St. Andrew of Crete and imitate those who met him then, not by covering his path with garments, olive branches or palms, but by doing all we can to prostrate ourselves before him by being humble and by trying Celebrated by Eastern Catho- to live as he would wish. HOSTED BY THE PARISH + IN THE COMMUNIT Y ST. VINCENT DE PAUL Palm Sunday Facts “So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out,” Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel” (John 12:13) Palm Sunday is the first day of Holy Week. The feast is Jesus’ triumphant arrival in the city of Jerusalem and He was greeted by people placing palm branches at his feet. While this is a triumphal entry, it is Jesus’ first step toward His death. The palm branch represented goodness and victory and was symbolic of the final victory He would soon fulfill over death. We have so much to be grateful for this week. The enemy knows that he is going to try and distract us away from the true meaning of what Holy Week means. Do not let him win. Let us choose to focus on worshipping our Lord and thanking Him for the gift of His sacrifice. Spring break and children being off from school can put our minds more towards what we will do while we’re off rather than be in the moment with the Lord and His journey, which is our journey too. The St. Vincent de Paul Society lives the Gospel, praying as a group at meetings and building their own spirituality in personal prayer.
