Youth Ministry at Our Lady of Perpetual Help By Fr. Tim As reorganization of the parishes continues to unfold throughout the diocese one of the top three concerns that is listed by the members of every parish that are involved in the process is how the faith will be handed on to the next generation. It doesn’t take a genius to recognize that unless the seeds of faith are planted in the hearts of young people the vitality of a parish will continue to diminish with the funeral of every aged parishioner who once had a real love and devotion for their parish. And, at the same time, because our culture is becoming so secularized, young people are finding it more and more difficult to be young and Christian, whether they are Protestant or Catholic. That is why as we launch our new parish, in response to a priority listed by the joint Pastoral Councils of both St. Ursula’s and St. Mary’s, we are revamping and budgeting resources for both youth ministry and religious education. This is also the time to express heartfelt appreciation to Christine Miller who has dedicated over a decade to helping young people come to know the Lord and to follow Him. The average Youth Minister serves a total of 2-3 and sometimes 5 years working with teens. It is very rare for someone to have the stamina to serve for 11 years like Christine has done, and, of course, the source of her energy has been her love, her love for the Lord and her love for young people. Her love has been like a fire inside of her that has both guided her and strengthened her. Week after week for 11 years she has given of herself tirelessly, creating fun activities, researching topics that would be relevant to her teens, teaching by word and example the power of faith, and, last, but not least, feeding, not only hungry hearts, but appetites that are insatiable with countless pizzas and homemade food. And this is only the part of her ministry that we notice. Nobody but God will ever know how many young people she has prayed with or for, or how many private discussions she has had with a heartsick kid or how many phone calls she has accepted or made. Christine was never motivated by the salary she was paid, but no salary would be enough to compensate her for the number of lives that she has touched, in both big and small ways, and we believe that one day the Lord will reward her in the manner that she deserves. “Whatever you did for the least of my brothers or sisters, you did for me.” At Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Youth Ministry will now be run by a team comprised by Jackie Good, Kurt Kessler, Mitch Gahr, Sr. Marie Fidelis, and Tony Ferguson. Jackie Good and Kurt Kessler will handle the programing and operations of everything in the parish. Jackie was a member of Christine’s youth group at one time and is now a senior at LaRoche University getting her degree in Psychology and Religious Studies. Kurt is a Pitt grad and former seminarian who has a great love for the Lord (and hockey) and has a great desire to share that with others. Later on we will give you more details on these amazing young adults and what they and the team have planned for Youth Ministry in the next few weeks.
