AUGUST 2018 WORKING TOGETHER Maitland is a great place to live, work and visit. Helping to keep it that way is at the heart of all of the Maitland and District Progress Associations activities. That includes bringing you your monthly Maitland Matters. Before the AGM on July 19th, Progress ran a Business Forum to which all businesses in the area were invited to attend. The objective was to bring local business owners together, to hear their thoughts and ideas on doing business in the area and how Progress might be able to help. It was also an opportunity to inform them of the Progress initiatives designed to help residents, visitors and businesses in the district. There are over fifty businesses, excluding farms, operating in the district and each received a survey prior to the meeting. Thirty percent returned their survey, which is a great return rate. There is still time to complete and return it or request a form from Progress if you have not received a copy. It is easy for Progress to engage with businesses that have a shop front but if you run a business from home, on-line etc and would like to be included in future forums please contact Kelly at the information centre with your details. The survey looked at issues including the biggest challenges faced doing business in the area, ideas to revitalise our main street and the help businesses would like from Progress. These topics were also discussed at the Business Forum. Customer loyalty Main streets across the globe are changing due to more people shopping on-line. However, if services such as a post office, newsagency, pharmacy, fuel station and supermarket are to be retained in our town they need our custom. The same goes for the farm supplies businesses. If we shop on-line or in other towns it is at the detriment of our community’s – jobs, services and support for our sports clubs etc. If the local stores don’t meet your needs, talk to them; they are willing to help if they can. Progress has run several shop local activities and based on suggestions raised at the Business Forum it is going to explore two more initatives – the introduction of ‘pop up shops’ and a shop local loyalty prize draw. Pop up shops would bring different products and services to town, so increasing the diversity on offer, while not competing with our current store holders.
If you have suggestions for pop up shops please let Kelly Dyett or Roger Morgan know. Other topics discussed included the development of a caravan park, re thinking the main street in relation to parking, trees, drainage and traffic. Progress will take some of the issues to Council for consideration. Growing the town Maitland is surrounded by a beautiful parkland golf course, is located in a reliable agricultural area, near to wonderful beaches and fishing and has good health services, two progressive schools, great sporting facilities, a high quality airstrip and is within easy reach of Adelaide. There is plenty of affordable housing and blocks to develop. We know all the positive facts about our district but we need to promote these advantages to others. We need to encourage individuals with drive and flair to start new enterprises and we need strong support from Council with building and development issues. Maitland is not only in easy reach of Adelaide, through the internet it is in easy reach of customers across the Globe – so while we encourage shopping locally from our businesses with shop fronts, there is also the opportunity to sell globally. But we all need to welcome those who choose to move to our district bringing new ideas and skills. Progress is also looking at how it can welcome and support new enterprises and individuals. In the coming months Progress will be working with our local businesses to implement some of the ideas and actions raised at the Business Forum. This is just the start. If you have ideas to help our district thrive and to maintain Maitland as a great place to live, work and visit we would love to hear from you. Emma Leonard – vice president Maitland and District Progress Association – emma.leonard@bigpond.com Maitland and District Progress Association AGM 2018 It has been another busy year and Progress is pleased to report continued collaboration with many of the local service clubs including Lions, APEX, and Rotary to deliver a range of activities. Over 50 volunteers regularly support Progress activities that benefit our district and we thank them all. Highlights from the past year of activities managed or supported by Progress. •620 copies distributed monthly of Maitland Matters, our local magazine. •92 nights’ accommodation at Clydesdale Cottage, heritage accommodation run by Progress. •750 plus visitors to the Maitland Information Centre and Maitland Markets •150 people attending the Australia Day Breakfast and Citizen of the Year Awards •100 plus people attending the Anzac Day service and breakfast, with guest speaker Josie Wundersitz. •300 plus attending the 1st Models and More family event. •300 plus tickets sold for the Saturday night production of Calendar Girls by Maitland Music Arts Club. •10,000 cans and bottles recycled
Around the town the Tidy Towns volunteers have had working bees, graffiti removal and tidy ups at the free camping area opposite the hospital, around the golf course and cemetery and the car park at the Hotel Maitland. The volunteers at the Men’s Shed have enjoyed comradeship while restoring and upcycling furniture and packaging materials as well as doing numerous odd jobs. The upgrade of the public toilets behind the town hall has been welcomed by tourists and we are working on making the parking by the pharmacy more accessible to help reduce pressure on the street parking at busy times. The upgrade of the Clinton Road is bringing more visitors and passing trade to Maitland’s businesses. Roger Morgan will continue as President, with support from Emma Leonard, Vice President and Sue Thomas, Minutes Secretary. Progress projects are run by Maitland Markets – Margaret Francis, Tidy Towns – Greg Treloar, Clydesdale Cottage Pat and Rod Nixon, Mens Shed – Arty Glazbrook. Other committee members Dean and Natalie Polkinghorne, Col Sandercock, Kelly Dyett, Hugh Wearing & Terry Roos. Progress administration is handled by our able part time employee Kelly Dyett who at the AGM was thanked for her considerable contribution to Progress over the past year. Maitland and District Progress Association meets at 7.30pm on the third Thursday of the month at the Maitland Information Centre. If you are interested in being involved please come and join us. Maitland residents and the nbn™ service We have been hearing that residents have been receiving calls regarding their landlines being cut off – we asked Jill Bottrall Local Manager for the nbn in SA & NT to clarify the situation As new options for telephone and internet services become available the choices can be confusing especially when considering that nbn broadband is supplied by fixed line, fixed wireless, and satellite, depending on where you live. The residents of Maitland have been able to connect to the National Broadband Network’s (nbn) fixed wireless ser vice since J anuar y 2015. Ar thur ton is due to have its fixed wireless nbn tower ready for service on July 31, 2018. This service offers fast broadband services that can be used for data (internet) and voice (VOIP). However, few properties have so far chosen to join up. This is possibly because many people have chosen the status quo and have their internet connections through their existing landline phone service (ADSL) or via their mobile phone. In areas, like Maitland and Arthurton, covered by a fixed wireless broadband service, the landline telephone is not subject to the 18 month copper phone network disconnection process. So, if residents in the Maitland area receive calls telling them their landline will be discontinued - this is not correct. In Kadina, Wallaroo, Moonta, Minlaton and Ardrossan the nbn service is delivered via a fixed line service, so their ordinary landline phone service will automatically disconnected. The nbn provides the infrastructure, but it does not sell plans to individual customers. The nbn’s website provides details of the retailers selling plans in your area. - https://www.nbnco.com.au/ If you order a fixed wireless nbn service and you wish to keep your ordinary landline service, you must remember to ask Telstra to keep your landline. It is important to tell Telstra and your retailer that you want both services. An advantage of keeping both services is that in the event of a power blackout, your existing landline should still work, depending on whether your handset is cordless and requires power. The first step to connecting to the nbn will be for customers to choose from one of many retail service providers who offer competitive service plans. We encourage you to make an appointment to connect to an nbn service via the retail service provider of their choice. Customers must make a decision about which broadband plan best suits their purposes in terms of speed, monthly data allowance and cost. Then, through your chosen retailer, you can make an appointment for an nbn technician to install a small receiving dish on the roof of your home, which is wired for a connection inside the building. For a standard install, nbn performs this service free of charge. The nbn’s fixed wireless technology delivers wholesale speeds of up to 50 megabits per second (mbps) download and 20 mbps upload.
As of today, 19,999 premises across regional and rural South Australia have connected to nbn’s fixed wireless broadband service that deliver speeds comparable to those that city residents take for granted. This is helping to close the city/regional divide in terms of access to fast broadband. Fast broadband can help deliver improved access to teleworking opportunities and entertainment on demand and it makes settling in rural areas a much more attractive prospect. The rollout of the nbn™ network is gathering momentum in South Australia. MAITLAND CFS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING MONDAY 13TH AUGUST 6.30PM BBQ FOLLOWED BY 8PM MEETING AT THE MAITLAND STATION ELECTION YEAR
Maitland & Districts Garden Club. For the July meeting members travelled to the home of Yvonne & Viv Jones at Port Vincent – and what a most enjoyable day it was. Their home is on a high cliff top facing the sea, which could be seen whilst walking throughout their front garden – seating available to enjoy the view. A large portion of the visit was spent walking around their garden, seeing the work and imagination they have done to share with people like those attending. There is an old saying “What is someone’s rubbish is someone else’s treasure” was very evident. From well worn shoes (many hand me downs from grandchildren as they grew), to the numerous china animals, dishes, pots and pans, brought back memories of yesteryears. These were filled with many different types of plants, especially succulents and clearly demonstrated “green fingers”. The area at the back saw a diverse variety of other flora and again a pleasure to see. The theme continued inside and more of Yvonne’s exceptional talents were displayed through her hobbies of crochet, knitting and using shells for decoration. Added to this when lunchtime came was the addition of Corn & chicken soup and baked apple crumble to supplement members BYO lunch. Whilst husband Viv did not say much one could see how proud he was of Yvonne’s ongoing achievements. Once again the meeting was brief however included a report on the progress of planning for the upcoming Zone Get Together in November relating to the Plant stall, catering and raffle. (News hot off the press as this article goes to print is that the Council of the Yorke Peninsula are waving costs for the use of the Town Hall and also offering assistance for the setting up on the Friday – just means so much to the success of this event, and greatly appreciated not to have the worry of this cost). Thank you Yvonne & Viv for your hospitality. Next meeting is on Monday 13th August at the National Trust 10.00am Member panel discussing managing some special Pot Plants. Also note we will be working on Mona’s small Stag horn and Elk horn hanging boards for plant stall after member’s panel presentation, please need to bring gloves. Rosebud.

MAITLAND MARKET REPORT The Market has had a very busy year. The volunteers have worked well over 2,500 hours to serve the local population and the tourists from all around Australia and some overseas guests. We have 21 volunteers who are on the roster. Last year we were sorry to lose Ann Longford as a member but she is still active in providing craft, jams & pickles when the opportunity arises. Our artist in residence, Bob Landt and Jen moved to Adelaide this year but he hopes to keep his gallery within the market. We thank him for his artistic excellence in past years. We thank the Men’s Shed for helping us with small repairs or projects and keep the mechanised sign easy to operate. This month August celebrates 12 years in operation as Maitland Markets. We are looking forward to hosting the book launch of “They heard me scream”. Details on page 4 of Maitland Matters. AN HISTORICAL LOOK……. CUNNINGHAM CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH “Sunday 27 November 1921 was an important day in the history of Congregationalism at Cunningham for on that day the new church was opened and dedicated to the service of God. The movement was started by the Rev. TS Williams and fostered by succeeding ministers, the Revs. EJ Stacy , HC Noll and CE Tapp. Outside the building on Sunday Mr WJH Smith, on behalf of the congregation, presented the Rev. CE Tapp with a key and asked him to open the church. Reports were presented by the officers and a large number of greetings were given and read.” (“The Maitland Watch” December 2 1921) Services were held in the schoolroom from 1911. In 1913 Mr Hans Petersen gave 3/4 acre of land on which the church was later built. The church closed many years ago and has since been demolished. Beryl Neumann
