CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON Sunday Bulletin –10th January 2021 BAPTISM OF THE LORD / 027 1 st Sunday of the Epiphany/Te Rātapu Tuatahi i muri i te Whakaaturanga Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson. + Children are welcome at our services. There are toys in the Quiet Room. Please feel free to take this publication away with you / leave for re-use. Dear Cathedralites, While it was pretty tough on Motueka orchardists who were inflicted upon with hail wreck- ing their crops the weather has reminded us lately that summer has finally arrived. Patsy and I spent a couple of nights at Motueka in our caravan and ventured up to the incredible resurgence near Riwaka. Amazingly, the water travels underground from Harwoods Hole at the top of Takaka hill. I was silly enough to jump into the deep hole at the entrance of the cave and received an instant headache. The water was absolutely freezing. However, it was also exhilarating. This morning we start the preaching series called ECO, the Epistles in Chronological Order. I have relied on the Rev. Ren Kempthorne for theological advice as to what the correct order could be and I certainly appreciate his wisdom. So today we start with Thessalonians. Thessalonica is in Northern Greece, the region of Macedonia. In biblical times it numbered 200,000 and rivalled Constantinople as the most important city. Under Alexander the Great’s influence his vision was to see the East and Western worlds united with Thessalonica being a pivotal point due to its location. It was ideally situated to encompass Asia in the east and Europe in the west. This was also the vision that Paul had for Christianity, that it would unite east and west and become a universal belief system, so that is what he endeavoured to do. Christianity is now the largest religion in the world. However, Paul, Silas and Timothy had their work cut out in the city of Thessalonica. It was the Jewish believers who caused most aggravation. They were jealous at the growth of Christianity so they plotted to cause a riot and to bring so-called justice against these Christians who they accused of subordination. However, Paul, Silas and Timothy prevailed and so can we when we have the strength and confidence to claim the good news of Christ. As I heard quoted recently: ‘keep your eyes on the prize.’ I had an amazing experience a couple of Sunday nights ago when I was invited to attend the inauguration of the Kerala Society. It was a big event at the Trafalgar Centre. Well, I have never seen such exuberant dancing and frivolity for a long, long time. The Bolly- wood style, the acrobatic dancers, the music and of course the food were all exhilarating. What struck me most though, was that all this laughter and energy was without one ounce of alcohol. Kerala Christians take seriously the importance of not falling for any addictions especially alcohol. What a contrast that was to the New Year celebrations by many local kiwis throughout New Zealand. Congratulations to Jojo, one of our Cathedralites who is the treasurer of the Kerala Society.
Get ready for the Deanery picnic on Sunday 24th January from 12 to 1.30pm. I promise you all that I will cut the grass and roll the croquet green so everyone has a chance to take out the prize this year. It is a grand picnic to come to because you meet up with other people who belong to the Cathedral but who you may never see because they go to different services. So, don’t miss out and be sure you come along. Please bring a seat because hopefully we will run out of ours! Have a great week. In silence we call to mind our sins. Let us confess our sins. All Merciful God, we have sinned in what we have thought and said, In the wrong we have done and in the good we have not done. He came to share repentance with all who mourn their sins, to speak the vital sentence with which good news begins. 2 He came to share temptation, our utmost woe and loss; for us and our salvation to die upon the cross. So when the Dove descended on him, the Son of Man, the hidden years had ended, the age of grace began. 3 Come, Holy Spirit, aid us to keep the vows we make; this very day invade us, and every bondage break; come, give our lives direction, the gift we covet most to share the resurrection that leads to Pentecost. Please remain standing and turn to face the Gospel reader The Holy Gospel Matthew 3:13-17 read by Reverend Trevor Squires After the announcement All sing Praise and glory to God 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John when Jesus had been baptized, just as at the Jordan, to be baptized by he came up from the water, suddenly the him. 14 John would have prevented him, heavens were opened to him and he saw saying, ‘I need to be baptized by you, and the Spirit of God descending like a dove do you come to me?’ 15 But Jesus and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from answered him, ‘Let it be so now; for it is heaven said, ‘This is my Son, the proper for us in this way to fulfil all right- Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’ eousness.’ Then he consented. 16 And Reader This is the Gospel of Christ All sing Praise to Christ, the Word Sermon Dean Mike Hawke Intercessions John Fitchett We conclude our prayers by singing the Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen We stand to affirm our faith in the words of the Apostle’s Creed All I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again; He ascended into Heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen 9
The Peace Celebrant The peace of Christ be always with you. All And also with you. Celebrant E te whanau, we are the body of Christ. All By one Spirit we were baptised into one body. Celebrant Keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. All Amen. We are bound by the love of Christ. Minister of Liturgy We worship God with our tithes and offerings as we sing CP 474 1 Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes, most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise. 2 Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; Thy justice like mountains high soaring above Thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love. 3 To all life thou givest, to both great and small; in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, and wither and perish; but naught changeth Thee. 4 Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; all laud we would render: O help us to see 'tis only the splendour of light hideth Thee. W. Chalmers Smith The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant To you, Lord, belongs the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory and the majesty. All All that is in the heavens and the earth is yours, and of your own we give you. Celebrant The Lord is here. All God’s Spirit is with us. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to offer thanks and praise. 10
Celebrant It is right indeed, it is our joy and our salvation, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise through Christ your only Son. You are the source of all life and goodness; through your eternal Word you have cre- ated all things from the beginning and formed us in your own image; male and female you created us. In Him we see You, the eternal God, revealing Your glory in our flesh, for He is the light of the nations who illuminates our darkness. When we sinned and turned away you called us back to yourself and gave your Son to share our human nature. By his death on the cross, He made the one perfect sacrifice for the sin of the world and freed us from the bondage of sin. You raised him to life triumphant over death: you exalted him in glory. In him you have made us a holy people by sending upon us your holy and lifegiving Spirit. Therefore, with the faithful who rest in him, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, which wert and art and evermore shalt be. Please kneel or be seated Celebrant All glory and thanksgiving to you, Holy Father, on the night before he died your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when He had given you thanks, He broke it, gave it to His disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me. After supper He took the cup; when He had given you thanks, He gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins; do this as often as you drink it, to remember me. All sing Glory to you Lord Christ, your death we show forth, your resurrection we proclaim, your coming we await. Amen. Come Lord Jesus. The Celebrant continues Therefore, loving God, recalling your great goodness to us in Christ, his suffering and death, his resurrection and ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate our redemption with this bread of life and this cup of salvation. Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving which we offer through Christ our great high priest. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine which we receive may be to us the body and blood of Christ, and that we, filled with the Spirit’s grace and power may be renewed for the service of your kingdom. United in Christ with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, O God, in songs of everlasting praise. 11
All sing Blessing honour and glory be yours, here and everywhere. Now and forever. Amen. The Communion Celebrant We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread. We do not presume to come to your holy table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your great mercy. We are not worthy even to gather the crumbs from under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the body of your dear Son, Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us. Amen. Those in the sanctuary receive communion The Invitation The Celebrant invites the people saying Draw near and receive the body and blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ in remembrance that he died for us. Let us feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The congregation is invited to receive communion at the High Altar. Please come up the centre aisle and return by the side aisles. During communion: Flugalhorn solo ‘To God be the glory’ Jan Lewis accompanied by Adrienne McDowell. Wafers will be offered. Gluten free available on request. The common cup is offered, along with grape juice in thimbles. Prayer after Communion Celebrant Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink His cup bring life to others, we whom the Spirit lights give life to the world. All Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name. Amen. The Blessing Notices 12
Minister of Liturgy Please stand to sing our final Hymn CP 81 1 Lord, for the years your love has kept and guided, urged and inspired us, cheered us on our way, sought us and saved us, pardoned and provided: Lord of the years, we bring our thanks today. 2 Lord, for that Word, the Word of life which fires us, Speaks to our hearts and sets our souls ablaze; Teaches and trains, rebukes us and inspires us; Lord of the Word, receive your people's praise. 3 Lord, for our land, in this our generation, Spirits oppressed by pleasure, wealth and care; For young and old, for commonwealth and nation, Lord of our land, be pleased to hear our prayer. 4 Lord, for our world; when we disown and doubt him, Loveless in strength, and comfortless in pain; Hungry and helpless, lost indeed without him; Lord of the world, we pray that Christ may reign. 5 Lord, for ourselves; in living power remake us Self on the cross and Christ upon the throne, Past put behind us, for the future take us; Lord of our lives, to live for Christ alone. Timothy Dudley-Smith / Michael Baughen The Dismissal of the Community Minister of Liturgy Go now to love and serve the Lord. Go in peace. All Amen. We go in the name of Christ. Worship is over, but our service is about to begin. Organ Voluntary 13
5.30 pm readings Isaiah 42:1-9 1Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. 2 He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; 3 a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. 4 He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. 5 Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it:6 I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, 7 to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. 8 I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. 9 See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. Ephesians 2:1-10 1 You were dead through the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. 3 All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness towards us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— 9 not the result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life. 14
