THE SOLEMN VIGIL OF EASTER
              SATURDAY, APRIL 3, 2021
NOTES ON TONIGHT’S MUSIC

Offertory: “Allegro moderato” Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) was a prolific Austrain composer of the
classical era who wrote over 100 symphonies. This movement is extracted from his Horn Concerto No. 2
in D major. We are so grateful to Gabrielle Finck for sharing her gifts with us this evening to help
proclaim the beginning of the Easter season.

Communion: “Regina caeli” G.P. Palestrina (1525-1594) who was the premier composer of sacred music
in 16th-century Italy. His smooth and refined compositional style emphasizes the intelligibility of text
and remains the model of Renaissance polyphonic writing.

Postlude: “Fanfare” Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens (1823-1881) who revitalized organ playing in Belgium by
traveling to Germany to study the works of J.S. Bach. Lemmens’ influence later spread to France, where
he taught Alexandre Guilmant and Charles-Marie Widor. This exuberant fanfare highlights the
composer’s virtuosic technique and sets the tone for a joyful Eastertide.

                            THE SOLEMN VIGIL OF EASTER
All lights have been extinguished. The Celebrant and servers process in silence to the
entrance of the church, while the People follow to gather around the brazier.

                                                 THE LUCERNARIUM
The Blessing of New Fire
In the darkness, a blazing fire is kindled with flint and steel; then the Priest addresses the People in these words:

D early Beloved: On this most sacred night in which our Lord Jesus Christ passed over from death unto life,
holy Mother Church calls upon her sons and daughters scattered throughout the world to come together and
to keep vigil, to watch and to pray. And if we thus devoutly observe the memorial of the Lord’s paschal solemnity
after this manner, hearkening to his Holy Word and celebrating his Easter mysteries, then shall we have the sure
and certain hope of sharing his triumph over death and Satan, and of living with him forever in God.
Priest The Lord be with you; People And with thy spirit. Priest Let us pray.

O God, who, through thy Son, hast bestowed upon thy faithful people the fire of thy brightness: we beseech
thee that thou wouldest sanctify  this new fire to be profitable to our service: and grant unto us, that by this
paschal feast we may be so inflamed with heavenly desires, that we may with pure hearts and minds attain unto the
feast of thy eternal brightness; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Priest sprinkles the New Fire with Holy Water

The Lighting & Blessing of the Paschal Candle
The Priest marks the Paschal Candle with a cross, Alpha & Omega, and the date, saying
Christ yesterday and today, the Beginning and the End, Alpha and Omega, his are all times
and all ages; to him be glory and dominion, through all the ages of eternity. Amen.
The Priest then fixes five grains of incense in the Candle in the form of a cross, saying
 1. By his holy 2. and glorious wounds, 3. may Christ our Lord 4. guard us 5. and preserve us. Amen.
Then Priest lights the Paschal Candle from the new fire, saying
May the light of Christ in glory rising scatter the darkness of heart and mind.
Then he blesses the lighted Candle, saying:
Priest The Lord be with you; People And with thy spirit. Priest Let us pray.
Almighty God, who art thyself unseen and yet renewest all things, shed forth upon this lighted Candle the abun-
dance of thy blessing,  and make more splendid still the brightness of this night: may our offering shine more
radiantly through the presence of thy hidden glory; and may this light shine in our hearts, to drive out the hidden deeds
of darkness and make manifest the power of thy majesty; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Solemn Procession of the Paschal Candle
The thurifer takes coals from the fire and places them in the thurible, which is then blessed by the Priest. The thurifer precedes the
Priest, who, bearing the Candle, leads the procession to the Sanctuary, the People returning to their pews. He pauses three times and
 sings:

The Easter Proclamation

 R
The Paschal Candle is placed in its stand. Then a Cantor sings the ancient Easter proclamation, the Exsultet
ejoice now, all ye heavenly legions of Angels: all high things that pass understanding: for the King that cometh
with victory, let the trumpet proclaim salvation! Sing with joy, O earth, illuminated with this celestial radiancy,
and enlightened by the eternal God thy glory, believe and know thou hast put away the darkness of all mankind! So
likewise let our mother, his holy Church, welcome the bright beams of light shed upon her:
and let his holy courts be filled with the praises of his people.

I t is very meet and right, that with the service of our lips we should glorify and praise with heart and soul God the
invisible and almighty, and likewise his Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who paid for us to
the eternal Father the debt of Adam’s transgression: and with his dear Blood wiped away the reproach of our former
offences. Now therefore we sacrifice our Passover, wherein for us the very Lamb of God is slain, by whose Blood
the doors of his faithful people are made holy.

T he night is come, wherein, when our fathers, the children of Israel, were led forth out of Egypt, thou dividest the
sea and madest them to pass over as on dry land. Yea, the night is come, that with the fiery pillar hath purged
away the darkness of our condemnation. The night is come, whereby all that believe in Christ upon the face of the
earth, delivered from this wicked world and out of the shadow of death, are renewed unto grace, and are made
partakers of eternal life. The night is come, wherein the bonds of death were loosed, and Christ harrowing hell rose
 again in triumph.

F or wherefore should man be born into this world, save that being born he might be redeemed? How wonder-ful
then, O God, is thy loving kindness unto us thy children! Behold, what manner of love he hath bestowed upon
us: who to redeem a servant delivered up his only Son! O wonderful providence of Adam’s transgression, that by
such a death sin might be done away! O blessed iniquity, for whose redemption such a price was paid by such a
 Savior!

O night verily blessed, to thee alone that time and that hour were made manifest, when our Savior Christ rose
again from death unto life. The night is come whereof David said: Behold the night is as clear as the day: then
shall my night be turned into day. The mystery therefore of this most holy night putteth to flight the deeds of
darkness, purgeth away sin, restoreth innocence to the fallen, and gladness unto them that mourn, casteth out hatred,
bringeth peace to all mankind, and boweth down mighty princes.

T herefore, in this thy favorable time, accept, O holy Father, this our evening sacrifice of incense: which as at this
time thy holy Church maketh before thee, and offereth to thee by the hands of thy servants, the work of the
 bees, thy creatures.

Y e hear, brethren, the meaning of this pillar we have set up, whereunto in God’s honor the bright flame of fire
doth set light. Which though it be never so much divided, yet knoweth not variableness nor loseth aught of its
splendor. For the wax that melteth doth but feed the flame, for thereunto have the creatures of God’s hand brought
it forth, that it should give light in darkness.

O night, verily blessed, which did spoil the people of Egypt, and magnified the Hebrews! O night, wherein heaven
and earth are joined, and mankind partaketh with the Godhead.
W e pray thee, therefore, O most Merciful: that this Candle which we have lighted and consecrated before thee
in thine own Name, may continue to shine forth without ceasing, and may vanquish all the shades of darkness.
That being accepted before thee as a sweet savor, it may be numbered with the lights that thou hast kindled. May
the daystar find it burning when he dawneth into day. The daystar that riseth and knoweth not his going down. But
coming forth from the places of darkness gladly giveth forth light unto all creation.

W e beseech thee, therefore, O most Merciful: that thou wouldest direct and guide us thy servants, and the hearts
of all thy family: and all those also that minister in thy service: especially Francis our Pope and thy servant
Steven our Bishop, so helping us with continual grace, that we may pass our time in rest and
quietness, in the glad solemnity of our Redemption. Through the same Jesus Christ, our
Mediator and Redeemer, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, ever one God,
 world without end.

                                        THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
Priest Dearly Beloved: Now that we have begun our solemn Vigil, let us listen with quiet hearts to the Word of
God. Let us hear the record of God’s saving deeds in history, how he saved his people in ages past; and
let us pray that our God bring each of us to the fullness of redemption.
The People sit. Candles are extinguished at this time.

Dearly beloved, let us humbly invoke upon this font the grace of God, the almighty Father, that those who from it
are born anew, and we who around it renew our baptismal profession, may be numbered among the children of
adoption in Christ.
The Litany of the Saints

By thy grace bless this font where thy children
             will be reborn:
The Blessing of Water
The Priest blesses the water, saying
Almighty and everlasting God, assist, we pray thee, this mystery and Sacrament of thine infinite loving-kindness:
and, for the regeneration of those persons seeking to be born again in the waters of Baptism, send forth upon them
the spirit of adoption; that this office and ministry of us thy unworthy servants may effectually be fulfilled in them
by thy mighty power; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the
Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

It is very meet, right and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O
Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God: who by thy invisible power dost wondrously give effect to the work
of thy sacraments. And though we be unworthy to perform mysteries so great, yet thou dost not leave us destitute
of the gifts of thy grace, but mercifully inclinest thine ears even unto these our supplications.
O God, whose Spirit in the first beginnings of the world moved over the waters: that even the nature of water might
conceive the virtue of sanctification; O God, who didst wash away in the waters the iniquities of a sinful world, and
didst, even in the outpouring of the flood, show forth in a figure our regeneration: that by the mystery of this same
 element there should be an end to sin and likewise a beginning of virtue;
Look, O Lord, upon the face of thy Church, and multiply in her the power of thy regeneration, for thou dost by the
streams of thine abundant grace make glad thy city: and openest the font of Baptism throughout the whole world
for the renewing of the nations: that by the command of thy majesty she may receive from the Holy Spirit the grace
 of thine Only Begotten Son.
May he, by the secret mingling of his divine power, make fruitful the water prepared for the regeneration of mankind:
that, having received sanctification, and being born again a new creature, there may come forth an offspring of
heaven from the spotless womb of this divine fountain: that all, whether male or female, young or old, may alike be
brought forth into one childhood by grace, their mother. Far hence, O Lord, at thy command let every unclean spirit
depart. Far hence be all the wickedness of the craft of the devil: let no power of the enemy here have place or
portion: let it not ensnare and compass us around: let it not attack us in secret: let it not taint us with corruption.
Touching the water with his hand, the Priest continues
May this holy and undefiled creature be free from every assault of the enemy, and purified by the departure of all
iniquity. May it be a living fountain, water that doth regenerate, a purifying stream: that all who shall be washed in
this laver of salvation may, by the operation of the Holy Spirit within them, obtain the grace of perfect purification.
The Priest makes three crosses over the water, saying
Wherefore I bless thee, O creature of water, by the living  God, by the true  God, by the holy  God: by God who
 in the beginning through his Word divided thee from dry land: whose Spirit moved upon thee;
He continues, with hands extended
Who made thee to flow from the fountain of paradise,
and commanded thee to water the whole earth with thy four rivers.
Who in the desert bestowed upon thee sweetness when thou wast bitter, that men might drink,
and brought thee forth from the rock for the thirsting people.
I bless thee also by Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who in Cana of Galilee
by a wondrous miracle did change thee through his power into wine.
Who walked upon thee with his feet: and was baptized by thee by John in the Jordan.
Who brought thee forth together with blood from his side: and commanded his disciples that believing they should
be baptized in thee, saying: Go ye, teach all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and
 of the Holy Spirit.
The Priest dips and withdraws the Paschal Candle into the water three times at successively greater depths;saying in successively
higher voice each time:
May the power of the Holy Spirit descend upon the fullness of this font.
With the Paschal Candle still in the water, he says
Almighty God, mercifully assist our prayers, who keep these thy commandments: graciously breathe thou upon us.
Bless with thy word and power this element of water: that as by nature it hath power to cleanse and wash the body,
so also it may be effectual for the purifying of the soul.
He breathes three times upon the water, and proceeds
And make the whole substance of this water to be fruitful unto regeneration.
Removing the Paschal Candle from the water, he continues
Here may the stains of every sin be blotted out: here may nature, created in thine image, be restored to the honor
of its first estate, and cleansed from all the defilement of its old condition: that every man who cometh to this
Sacrament of regeneration may be born again unto the new childhood of innocence.
Through Jesus Christ thy Son, our Lord: who shall come to judge the quick and the dead, and the world by fire.
 Amen.

The Renewal of Baptismal Promises
All holding lighted candles, the Priest addresses the People
Dearly beloved brethren, on this most holy night, our holy Mother the Church, calling to mind the death and burial
of our Lord Jesus Christ, rendereth unto him love for love, and keepeth vigil; and awaiting his glorious Resurrection,
 rejoiceth with great gladness.
But since, as the Apostle teacheth us, we have been buried with Christ by Baptism into his death, so like as Christ
was raised up from the dead, we too should walk in newness of life: knowing this, that our old nature is crucified
with him, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Let us reckon ourselves therefore to be dead indeed unto sin,
but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Wherefore, dearly beloved brethren, now that our Lenten exercises are over, let us renew the promises made in Holy
Baptism, whereby we once renounced Satan and all his works, and likewise the world which is the enemy of God,
and promised to serve God faithfully in his holy Catholic Church. Therefore I ask you:
Do you renounce the devil and all his works, the vain pomp and glory of the world, with all covetous desires of the
same, and the sinful desires of the flesh, so that you will not follow nor be led by them?
People I do. Priest Let us recite the articles of our belief.
Then all say the Apostles’ Creed:
 I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried:
 He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
 I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy Catholic Church; the Communion of Saints;
the forgiveness of sins; the Resurrection of the body,  and the Life everlasting. Amen.
Priest Will you endeavour to keep God’s holy will and commandments,
and walk in the same all the days of your life?
People I will, God being my helper.
The Priest concludes,
And may Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath regenerated us by water and the Holy Spirit,
and hath given unto us forgiveness of all our sins, himself guard us by his grace unto everlasting life, in the same
 Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Taking some of the blessed water, the Priest goes throughout the church sprinkling the People, as all sing this Canticle.

Vidi aquam plainsong

Then the Priest and Ministers return to their appointed places and the People extinguish their candles.

Offertory Hymn At the Lamb’s High Feast We Sing SALZBURG

Orate Fratres
Priest Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Father almighty.
People May the Lord accept the sacrifice at thy hands for the praise and glory of his name,
for our good, and the good of all his holy Church.

Prayer over the Offerings
Priest We beseech thee, O Lord, mercifully to accept the prayers and oblations of thy people: that this beginning
of thy Paschal Mysteries my by the operation of thy grace be unto us a wholesome medicine unto
everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sursum Corda

 The Priest proceeds
It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O
Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God; but chiefly are we bound to praise thee for the glorious Resurrection
of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the very Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and hath taken away
the sin of the world; who by his death hath destroyed death, and by his rising to life again hath won for us everlasting
life. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious
name; evermore praising thee, and saying,
Sanctus & Benedictus H. Willan

                                                                                           

The People kneel. Then the Priest says
Therefore, most merciful Father, we humbly pray thee, through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, and we ask, that
thou accept and bless  these gifts, these offerings, these holy and unspoiled sacrifices. We offer them unto thee,
first, for thy holy Catholic Church: that thou vouchsafe to keep her in peace, to guard, unite, and govern her
throughout the whole world: together with thy servant Francis our Pope, Steven our Bishop, and all the faithful
guardians of the catholic and apostolic faith.

Commemoration of the Living
Remember, O Lord, thy servants and handmaids and all who here around us stand, whose faith is known unto thee
and their steadfastness manifest, on whose behalf we offer unto thee or who themselves offer unto thee this sacrifice
of praise: for themselves, and for all who are theirs: for the redemption of their souls, for the hope of their health
and well-being: and who offer their prayers unto thee, the eternal God, the living and the true.
United in one communion, we celebrate the most sacred night of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ
according to the flesh, we venerate moreover the memory, first, of the glorious ever-virgin Mary, Mother of the
same our God and Lord Jesus Christ; of blessed Joseph her spouse; as also of thy blessed Apostles and Martyrs,
Peter and Paul, Andrew, James, John, Thomas, James, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Simon, and Thaddaeus; Linus,
Cletus, Clement, Xystus, Cornelius, Cyprian, Lawrence, Chrysogonus, John and Paul, Cosmas and Damian, and of
all thy Saints; grant that by their merits and prayers we may in all things be defended with the help of thy protection.
We beseech thee then, O Lord, graciously to accept this oblation from us thy servants, and from thy whole family:
we present it unto thee on behalf also of those whom thou hast vouchsafed to regenerate by water and the Holy
Spirit, granting unto them remission of all their sins; order thou our days in thy peace, and bid us to be delivered
from eternal damnation and to be numbered in the fold of thine elect.
Vouchsafe, O God, we beseech thee, in all things to make this oblation blessed, approved, and accepted, a perfect
and worthy offering: that it may become for us the Body and Blood of thy dearly beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

Who the day before he suffered, took bread into his holy and venerable hands, and with eyes lifted up to heaven
unto thee, God, his Almighty Father, giving thanks to thee, he blessed, broke, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT:
                                            FOR THIS IS MY BODY,
WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.

Likewise, after supper, taking also this goodly chalice into his holy and venerable hands, again giving thanks to
thee, he blessed, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT,
FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD,
THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT,
WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY
                                  FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.
DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

 The mystery of faith:

 The Priest continues
Wherefore, O Lord, we thy servants, and thy holy people also, remembering the blessed passion of the same Christ
thy Son our Lord, as also his resurrection from the dead, and his glorious ascension into heaven; do offer unto thine
excellent majesty of thine own gifts and bounty, the pure victim, the holy victim, the immaculate victim, the holy
Bread of eternal life, and the Chalice of everlasting salvation.
Vouchsafe to look upon them with a merciful and pleasant countenance: and to accept them even as thou didst
vouchsafe to accept the gifts of thy servant Abel the Righteous, and the sacrifice of our patriarch Abraham: and the
holy sacrifice, the immaculate victim, which thy high priest Melchisedech offered unto thee.
We humbly beseech thee, Almighty God, command these offerings to be brought by the hands of thy holy Angel
to thine altar on high, in sight of thy divine majesty: that all we who at this partaking of the altar shall receive the
most sacred Body and Blood of thy Son, may be fulfilled with all heavenly  benediction and grace.

Commemoration of the Dead
Remember also, O Lord, thy servants and handmaid who have gone before us sealed with the seal of faith, and who
sleep the sleep of peace. To them, O Lord, and to all that rest in Christ, we beseech thee to grant the abode of
refreshing, of light, and of peace.
To us sinners also, thy servants, who hope in the multitude of thy mercies, vouchsafe to grant some part and
fellowship with thy holy Apostles and Martyrs: with John, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, Ignatius, Alexander,
Marcellinus, Peter, Felicitas, Perpetua, Agatha, Lucy, Agnes, Cecilia, Anastasia, and with all thy saints: within whose
fellowship, we beseech thee, admit us, not weighing our merit, but granting us forgiveness.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord; through whom, O Lord, thou dost ever create all these good things: dost sanctify,
quicken, bless, and bestow them upon us.
By whom and with whom and in whom, to thee, O Father Almighty, in the unity of the Holy
Spirit, be all honor and glory throughout all ages, world without end.

The Lord’s Prayer plainsong
The Priest says As our Savior Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to say,

The Priest continues Deliver us, O Lord, we beseech thee, from all evils, past, present, and to come; and at the
intercession of the blessed and glorious ever Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with thy blessed Apostles Peter and Paul,
and with Andrew, and all the Saints, favorably grant peace in our days, that by the help of thine availing mercy we
may ever both be free from sin and safe from all distress.

The Peace
O Lord Jesus Christ, who saidst to thine Apostles, Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you: Regard not our
sins, but the faith of thy Church; and grant to her peace and unity according to thy will; who livest and reignest with
the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Fraction of the Host plainsong, ‘Tonus peregrinus’
The Priest breaks the consecrated Host. Then is sung

Agnus Dei H. Willan
Prayer of Humble Access
We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in
thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table.
But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord,
so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made
clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore
dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.
Facing the People, and showing the Chalice and Host, the Priest says
Behold the Lamb of God, behold him that taketh away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb.
The People respond three times
Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof,
but speak the word only and my soul shall be healed.

                                               The Holy Communion

A prayer to make a spiritual communion
My Jesus, I believe that you are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I long for you in my soul.
Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though you have already come,
I embrace you and unite myself entirely to you; never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.
                                                                                                    -St. Alphonsus de Liguori

Prayer of Thanksgiving, said by All
Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us in these holy mysteries,
with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost
assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the
mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of
thy everlasting kingdom, by the merits of the most precious death and passion of thy dear Son. And we
humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy
fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our
Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.
Postcommunion Prayer
Priest Let us pray: We beseech thee, O Lord, pour into our hearts the love of thy Holy Spirit: that as thou hast
            now fulfilled us with this Paschal Sacrament; so thou wouldest make us to continue in all godly concord;

ABOUT MOUNT CALVARY
Mount Calvary Catholic Church brings forward the fullness of the faith. The Mass is the supreme act of worship
throughout the history of the Church, and we embrace all its symbolism and beauty to transform our world. We
worship so as to lift up Christ in the beauty of holiness.

Where heaven and earth meet
Our worship awakens the senses and prepares the heart to receive our Lord. We enter into a holy realm and leave
the commonplace behind. Holy water reminds us of our baptism. Incense prepares the way for the Lord’s
presence. Music lifts up our hearts in beauty and truth.
We bring forward a form of worship with ancient roots that stands the test of time. We leave time behind as heaven
meets earth in mystery and the reality of our Lord’s presence in the Eucharist.

Distinctive aspects of our worship
Incense. In the New Testament book of Revelation, incense represents the prayers of the saints. In the Old
Testament, incense is used in the Temple sacrifice. From ancient times, incense sweetens the air to honor important
visitors. Incense at Mass invokes all this symbolism. From the earliest days of the Church, incense has been used to
prepare the altar and people for the presence of our Lord.
Sung prayers and readings. Music lifts up the heart and honors God. Singing elevates our Sunday worship as the
most important thing that we do each week.
Kneeling and standing. As we worship with our bodies, our hearts become more fully engaged. The basic idea is
this: kneel for prayer, sit for instruction, stand for praise.
The King’s English. Some call this traditional English. While the language is traditional, it was never the
common language of the street. Instead, it was the most exalted and beautiful language in England at the time the
liturgy was developed: The King’s English. The intent was that nothing less should be used in worship of our God.
This language continues to be more poetic and easier to remember than street English. While there are occasions to
address God more informally, this language in worship helps us to step out of the realm of the commonplace in
order lift up our hearts to our Heavenly King.
The priest facing the altar. The priest faces the people when addressing the people and he faces the altar when
addressing God. This approach helps to keep our focus on God when our prayers are addressed to him. This is the
way priests have said Mass throughout most of Church history.

O worship the Lord in the beauty
of holiness: let the whole earth
stand in awe of him. Psalm 96:9
