Order of Service Twentieth Sunday After Pentecost WELCOME Our service follows a liturgical tradition handed down to us since the time of the Apostles. Please follow along, and participate by reading the portions in bold. Some people choose to follow the ancient Jewish tradition (see Ezekiel 9) of making a “cross” sign at certain portions of the liturgy. Those wishing to do so, may, at portions marked with a ☩ sign. We have modified our liturgy today to include portions from the 2019 Book of Common Prayer for the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA). This includes prayers, confessions, and creeds from the past 2000 years of church history! For more information, visit: http://www.anglicanchurch.net/?/main/texts_for_common_prayer. It also includes all the scripture readings from the Revised Common Lectionary, used by Anglicans, Reformed, Lutherans, and other Christian Traditions worldwide. As Anglicans who observe the Church Calendar, we now observe Ordinary Time, which begins on Pentecost Sunday and lasts until later November. During this season, we reflect upon gift of the Holy Spirit, given to the church on the Day of Pentecost, as recorded in Acts 2. We believe that the miraculous work begun that day has continued through to the present day. Ordinary Time reminds us of the intersection between our story, and that of the early church, and provides us with an opportunity to reflect on how God operates even in the midst of common, ordinary events. CHILDREN’S MINISTRY If you or someone you know have young children, and you want help ministering to them during this challenging time, we have some great resources to help. Please contact our children’s ministry supervisor, Pastor Lorraine Loria, so we can serve you and your children better! (916) 778-9892. All of our child care workers are Ministry Safe certified, and have had full background checks. MINISTRY OF THE WORD OF GOD Our service is divided in to two sections: the Ministry of the Word of God, and the Ministry of the Holy Communion. The first section primarily focuses on the scriptures, in light of all Jesus Christ has accomplished for us, as they are prayed, confessed, and explained. Those watching online can request to have elements brought to their homes during the week.

WORDS OF WELCOME Minister: Welcome to Incarnation, a community rooted in Christ and the traditions we have received since the time of the Apostles, Artistic in the way we live our lives and worship, and Welcoming to all whom the Lord brings in to our midst. Minister: Blessed be God, The Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit ☩. People: And blessed be his Kingdom, now and forever. Amen. COLLECT FOR PURITY Minister: Let us pray together. Minister & People: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. COLLECT OF THE DAY “Collect” refers to a form of prayer, used in liturgies since the third century, that Christians use when they “collect” together for worship. Minister: The Lord be with you. (Ruth 2:4) People: And with your spirit. Minister: Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. ☩ People: Amen. (You may be seated or kneel while we pray together)
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE The Deacon or other person appointed says these prayers, or the Prayers of the People in the Anglican Standard Text. The reader pauses after each bidding, and the people may add petitions, either silently or aloud. Let us pray. Father, we pray for your holy catholic* church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; especially Archbishop Foley Beach, Bishop Todd Hunter, Father Rob, our Dean, Father Josh, our Priest, Father Carl, and Pastors Kendra and Lorraine. That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. Hear us, Lord, as we lift up to you the following ministries and churches; That they may faithfully serve you in unity and peace: (Pause for name of ministries and churches) We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; especially for President Donald Trump, Governor Gavin Newsom, Roseville City Manager Dominick Casey, and Placer County Supervisor Bonnie Gore. We also pray for the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors and Placerville Mayor John Clerici. That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for those in need. (Pause to mention names) Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. Prayer for our Present Time: “Almighty and merciful God, who created the universe and holds it together by the word of your power; we thank you for creating our bodies with immune systems, and for calling some of us to be physicians. Strengthen our immune systems to resist viral infections during this time, grant wisdom to the physicians who care for the sick, and grant them extra protection as they care for others. And for those who are currently ill, we pray for healing and strength, and for grace until such time as full recovery occurs. All this we ask through Jesus Christ, our Lord and healer, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit rules and reigns forever and ever, Amen.” Prayer for Social Justice: Almighty God, you created us in your own image: Grant us grace to contend fearlessly against evil and to make no peace with oppression; and help us to use our freedom rightly in the establishment of justice in our communities and among the nations, to the glory of your holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, ☩ one God, now and forever. Amen. Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ☩ now and forever. Amen.
CONFESSION OF SIN Our confession for today comes from Celtic Daily Prayer, part of the liturgy utilized by the Northumberland Community, a Christian Monastic Community in North-East England. These confessions are based on similar confessions used by Celtic Communities in the Fifth Century. Minister & People: Lord, we have sinned against you: forgive us that we have not loved you with all our heart, all our soul, all our mind, and all our strength. Lord, we have sinned against others: remove vengeance, anger, hatred, and wicked thoughts from us; send from heaven a drop of Your Holy Spirit to transform our hearts of stone. Let our memories provide no shelter for grievance against others. Let our hearts provide no harbor for hatred of others. Let our tongues cease judging our brothers and sisters. Lord, teach us your ways, and let us walk in your truth. We put behind ourselves our stubborn independence, and turn again to you. In the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. ☩ Amen (Silent Confession) ABSOLUTION (John 20:23) Absolution means “to grant forgiveness”. The words the minister shares here are Christ’s words of forgiveness to His children. Minister here reads comfortable words from scripture, then says: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all ☩ goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. PRAYER FOR CHILDREN (Children are normally invited to come forward at this time and then dismissed for Children’s Church afterward) SIGN OF PEACE Minister: May the Peace of the Lord be with you. (John 20: 19, 21) People: And with your spirit. Please stand and greet one another during this time with a “Holy Fist or Elbow Bump”. You may also greet one another online during this time. The traditional greeting is “Peace Be With You” with the response “And also with you…”

EPISTLE READING 1 Thessalonians 1 English Standard Version 1:1 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. 2 We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, 3 remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 4 For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. 6 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, 7 so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. 8 For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. 9 For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come. Lector: The word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. Matthew 22:15-22 English Standard Version 22: 15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. 16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21 They said, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” 22 When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away. Reader: The gospel of the Lord. Congregation: Praise to you, Lord Christ!

Nicene Creed (Please stand) (4th Century) This creed, drafted at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, responded to the heretical teachings of Arius, who preached Jesus as a non- eternal, created being. At the Council of Constantinople in 381 AD, this creed underwent further modification, in order to better communicate a Biblical understanding of the Trinity. It uses the word “catholic” to refer to the universal church, consisting of Christ followers throughout the ages, as opposed to a particular denomination. Together with the Apostles Creed, the Nicene Creed has helped establish the boundaries that define “Christian” and unify followers of Christ for almost 2000 years. The following version of the Creed is used in the 2019 Book of Common Prayer. It is a newer English translation, that better reflects the language of the original Creed in Greek. The phrase “and the Son” †(Latin: filioque) is not in the original Greek text. The Coptic and Orthodox Traditions do not use it. Its recitation is now optional in ACNA Congregations. Minister: Followers of Christ, what do you believe? Minister & People: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son],† who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead ☩, and the life of the world to come. Amen. *”Catholic” means “universal” or “true”. It does not refer to a particular denomination or tradition. (You May Be Seated)
OFFERING OURSELVES AND OUR GIFTS Christ followers support the church’s mission and ministry through offering a sacrificial portion of our resources–time, talents, possessions–as an act of faith and gratitude in response to God’s grace. This pattern To give online during this time, please visit: www.IncarnationMission.Org/donate Or you can mail us a check at PO Box 434, Roseville, CA 95661. OFFERTORY PRAYER Minister & People: Through Christ may we continually offer to God the sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his Name. May we not neglect to do good and to share what we have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Amen. (-Based on Hebrews 13:15, 16)
OFFERING SONG “Lutheran Hymn” Michael Roe Original, from Say Your Prayers, (c) 2002. I sing praises in the morning, I sing praises in the day, I sing praises every evening, I sing praises always. You are there at every dawning, And inside the eventide, Every afternoon and evening, You are there, you are walking by my side. I sing praise when I don't want to, I sing praise when I can't feel, I sing praises 'cause I ought to, I sing praises 'cause you're real. I will thank you for the blessings, I will bless you for the curse, I rejoice when I hear the bad news, 'Cause the bad news could always be much worse. I sing praises in the morning, I sing praises in the day, I sing praises every evening, I sing praises always.
CLOSING OFFERTORY PRAYER People: All things come of thee, Oh Lord, and of Thine own have we given Thee. (-I Chronicles 29:14) Amen. People may be seated THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Sursum Corda Latin for “Lift Up Our Hearts Minister: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit. Minister Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Minister: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is just and right so to do. Minister: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through Jesus Christ our Lord; according to whose most true promise, the Holy Spirit came down from heaven, lighting upon the disciples, to teach them, and to lead them into all truth; giving them boldness and fervent zeal constantly to preach the Gospel to all nations; by which we have been brought out of darkness and error into the clear light and true knowledge of you, and of your Son Jesus Christ. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Minister: Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord ☩ People: Hosanna in the highest! “Hosanna” means “Save now, Oh God” in Aramaic, the language Jesus spoke. (Psalm 118:25; Mark 11:9, 10; Matthew 21:9) Minister: Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” ☩ After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” ☩ Therefore let us now sing the words of the mystery of the faith:

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also ☩ that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. ☩ THE LORDS PRAYER And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Minister & People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil ☩. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. Minister: Hallelujah! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Hallelujah!
THE PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS People: We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord, who always delights in showing mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. Minister: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb. John 1:29, Revelation 19:9 INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EUCHARIST The Eucharistic elements on the altar are open to all who would consider themselves baptized Christians, regardless of tradition or background. During the current flu season, we will be following the ancient practice of taking communion in “one kind”. This means we will only use bread/ wafers and will not be drinking any fruit of the vine. (We believe the body and blood of Christ will still manifest in a mystical manner). You don’t have to know all the answers, nor do you need “perfect” faith. God has faithfully met people throughout the ages by way of these words and elements. Whatever struggles or doubts you may have, He will faithfully meet you through these means of grace. If you find yourself unsure of your standing with God, please take advantage of this time to consider all God has done for you through Jesus Christ. No matter where you are on your spiritual journey, there are prayers for meditation on the bak of this bulletin that can help you draw near to God. If you or your children would like to come forward to witness the table, but not partake, you are welcome to do so. Just cross your arms, and the minister will pray a blessing over you. The minister receive the Sacrament in both kind, and then immediately deliver it to the people with these words: The Body and Blood of Christ, shed for you. Amen. ☩ After Communion, the Minister says: Let us pray. Minister and People: Eternal God, heavenly Father, You have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, and You have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of His Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. If you are able, please stand for the singing of the Gloria Patri.
The Gloria Patri contains the oldest known words, outside of scripture, that followers of Christ have sung or recited, for over 1900 years. Traditionally, when the Trinitarian Formula (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost) is used, worshippers either bow their heads or make the sign of the cross. Gloria Patri Please Be Seated ANNOUNCEMENTS CLOSING BLESSING Minister: The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, ☩ be among you, and remain with you always. Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.
