The first day of camp had us work through challenge activities that opened up each part of this motto and reflect upon how we can be leaders in 2021. The second day of camp for both groups was a chance to meet and work with our buddies from our partner schools, St Paul’s Bridgewater and St Brigid’s New Norfolk. Both groups did an outstanding job at welcoming our buddies and getting to know them in these initial moments of our work together this year. These meetings set the scene for further mentoring that will occur on camps and day programs throughout 2021, culminating in a weeklong immersion in both schools in early December. 282 Westbury Road, Prospect TAS 7250 | T: 03 6341 9988 | E: contact@stpatricks.tas.edu.au | www.stpatricks.tas.edu.au 3
STUDENT AND COMMUNITY NEWS 29 APRIL 2021 | ISSUE NO 5 JAPAN FOUNDATION JAPANESE ROADSHOW EVENT By Mrs Lea Watson, Teacher On Wednesday 24 March, two Year 8 Japanese classes visited Scotch Oakburn College to participate in the Japan Foundation Japanese Roadshow event. Members of the Japan Foundation, Sydney were in attendance and our students spent the afternoon immersed in Japanese cultural activities. The students learned a traditional Yosakoi dance from the Japanese island of Shikoku. They also participated in Undoukai, (Sports Festival) activities, which are a big part of each and every Japanese students’ life. Students were divided into colour teams and enjoyed competing against each other to play Dekapan (running together wearing huge shared boxer shorts), tama ire (ball toss game) & oodama (giant ball). This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience authentic Japanese culture, whilst learning appropriate Japanese phrases at the same time. The students are to be commended on their active participation in this event. 282 Westbury Road, Prospect TAS 7250 | T: 03 6341 9988 | E: contact@stpatricks.tas.edu.au | www.stpatricks.tas.edu.au 4
STUDENT AND COMMUNITY NEWS 29 APRIL 2021 | ISSUE NO 5 VOCATIONAL EDUCATION & TRAINING By Mrs Maria Bassett, Head of Faculty - Vocational Education & Training ST PATRICK’S DAY FEAST Learning is definitely engaging in our Senior VET Hospitality program, especially when catering for the St Patrick’s Feast day function where the daily brief is to enjoy yourself, be happy and most importantly embrace the celebration of our patron Saint Patrick. The St Patrick’s VET kitchen brigade consisted of 25 Year 11/12 students and included students from our three independent school partners (Scotch Oakburn College, The Launceston Christian School, and Launceston Church Grammar School). Together the Hospitality team created a gastronomic feast that was nothing short of spectacular. Well done to all staff and students involved in this event. VET ANIMAL STUDIES A new Year 10 VET Animal Studies partnership has been recently formed between Larmenier Primary School and St Patrick’s College. This golden opportunity to work in cooperation with the Larmenier school farm has offered our students practical animal handling experiences alongside the staff and students from one of our local Catholic primary schools. The farm school accommodates a broad range of farm, companion animals and pets. Our students are extremely grateful to have these hands-on experiences in our local area. Thank you to the staff and students at Larmenier Primary School for welcoming our students onto your farm. 282 Westbury Road, Prospect TAS 7250 | T: 03 6341 9988 | E: contact@stpatricks.tas.edu.au | www.stpatricks.tas.edu.au 5
