A Message from the President: Hello All, Many great things are happening for Alabama Association for Gifted Children! We are excited to be able to offer events that are specifically designed to support our mission: to provide advocacy, leadership, and support to assist educators, parents, and community partners in meeting the educational and affective needs of gifted children in Alabama. I hope that each one of you will join us for one or more of the activities that we have planned. AAGC is proud to sponsor our very first Leadership Academy with guest speaker, Dr. Sylvia Rimm. Dr. Rimm’s many years as a contributing correspondent to NBC’s Today Show and as a favorite personality on public radio make her a familiar child psychologist to many audiences. This event is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Samford University. Our goal is to have equal representation of gifted specialists and parents. Thank you to all the gifted specialist who have registered for the Leadership Academy. Tickets allotted for gifted specialist have been taken, but if you know parents of gifted students who would be interested in this unique opportunity to attend the Leadership Academy, please contact Patti Wood at pfwood@samford.edu In addition to the Leadership Academy, AAGC is sponsoring an Administrators’ Lecture Series with Dr. Jonathan Plucker. Dr. Plucker will speak on “Is There a Gifted Gap? Addressing Both Equity and Excellence in K-12 Schools”. This lecture series is specifically designed for Superintendents, Principals, Directors of Curriculum and Instruction, and Directors of Gifted Education. The goals we hope to accomplish by offering this lecture are: to examine the policies and procedures and student outcomes of gifted students in order to increase student learning and achievement, to provide training to school administrators regarding gifted learners, and to increase services for gifted students. Administrators will have the option to participate in activities and earn credit for one PLU. This event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at Troy University in Montgomery. Two sessions will be offered: 8:30-11:30 and 12:30-3:30. Expect a few surprises and a whole lot of energy at our new location! AAGC board members are truly excited about the direction our conference is taking in 2018. Our conference theme this year is Beyond Boundaries in Gifted Education. I look forward to the days ahead as we continue to push forward and beyond any boundaries and/or obstacles that educators encounter in meeting the needs of gifted students. It’s time for our gifted students to be recognized for their unique learning needs. It’s time to meet the educational and affective needs of every gifted student in Alabama. Check out our website www.alabamagifted.org for more details and plan to join AAGC 2018 Conference as we learn and work toward our common goal of reaching Beyond Boundaries in Gifted Education. Hope to see you soon, Rita Sparks AAGC President AAGC Advocacy Survey Help your organization to be better advocates for gifted education. This survey will help Alabama Association for Gifted Children gather information about what is being done across our state to advocate for gifted education. Many of you have worked very hard to advocate for the needs of your students. Let us know the great things you are doing! We will use this information to help move gifted education forward in Alabama. Please complete the following Google Form survey to let us know who is connected to their legislator and what has been done to advocate for gifted education. https://goo.gl/forms/DWDT6saXCABNUm043 6
AAGC Advocacy For the first time, AAGC has purchased one small billboard space to remind legislators to fund Gifted Education Programs. This poster was located on the left side of Heron Street, after two blocks from Highway 65 in Montgomery. That same spot became available for the month of March and a new poster was used. 7
New Location for 2018 Conference Your AAGC Board met February 2-3 at the Birmingham Marriott on Grandview Parkway to look over our new venue for the upcoming October 17-19, 2018 AAGC conference. We have been at the McWane Center for many years, but as our membership has grown, so has our need for a larger venue. After looking for more than a year at many options in Birmingham and Montgomery, we have decided to move to the Grandview Marriott. Check it out at this link. This hotel looks like it will be a super place to hold our convention! We will have plenty of room for our breakout sessions as well as a lovely hall to hold our keynote presentations. Parking is free and rooms will be discounted for all members attending. Dr. Patti Wood and Laurie Sherrell as conference committee chairs have been working hard planning for this event, and did much of the research to decide on this super location. 2018 Conference Theme: Beyond Boundaries in Gifted Education 2018 Keynotes AAGC is excited to welcome Lisa Van Gemert as our keynote speaker on Thursday, October 18, 2018. Lisa is the author of the book, Perfectionism: A Practical Guide to Managing “Never Good Enough” and of the site, “The Gifted Guru.” She is a frequent conference keynote speaker, facilitator of educational and business professional development, expert consult to television shows, and author of articles published in magazines and peer-reviewed journals. Lisa will share information, strategies, and resources for those who know, love and guide gifted individuals. AAGC is proud to announce that Dr. Richard Cash will by our keynote speaker on Friday, October 19, 2018. Richard serves on various boards and associations, such as the World Council on Gifted Education, ASCD, and The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC). He has served as the Administrator of Gifted Programs in Rochester, Minnesota, and the Director of Gifted Programs for the Bloomington Public Schools in Minnesota. Dr. Cash has authored numerous articles on quality instructional practices and a popular teacher resource guide, Advancing Differentiation: Thinking and Learning for the 21st Century (Revised & Updated). He co-authored the book Differentiation for Gifted Learners: Going Beyond the Basics with Dr. Diane Heacox. A special THANK YOU to our Deluxe Platinum Conference Sponsor Troy University is a public, historic, international university with more than 154,000 alumni. Students choose TROY for its quality academic programs, reasonable costs and availability of financial aid, as well as its outstanding faculty and flexible in-class, online and blended class offerings. Troy University offers incredible opportunities and the personal approach to teaching that can help students achieve more than they ever thought possible. TROY calls it the “Trojan Warrior Spirit,” and it’s at the heart of everything we do. The quiet crisis of school is underachieving n tar y gifted students. When gifted students are not Elem e challenged in learning, schools may foster underachievement. Gifted students find school s is easy because they have already mastered ac hin g the standards, skills, and objectives. Kaplan Te (2005) accuses time as the academic terrorist because teachers are required to follow pacing guides, must schedule lessons within bells or allotted time, and may not provide differentiated activities in which gifted students can be creative and satisfied with their projects. Underachieving gifted students are faced with preconceived stereotypes that gifted is equal to high achievement and something is wrong with the child. However, underachievement is a response to the environmental conditions. How can we help gifted students who are underachieving? One student at a time! We can change the underachieving behavior, but we need to start early. This starts with analyzing the data for patterns of underachievement over time. The gifted specialist needs to meet with the student to discuss what is going on. Then meet with the parents, classroom teacher, student, and counselor to develop an individualized plan to change behavior. Stay focus on the students abilities and not on the weaknesses. Revisit the plan to revise as needed. Above all, advocate for the gifted child. Yes, we need you to share your tips and strategies that you use to meet the unique, diverse learning needs of your gifted students. Send your articles to alabamagifted@gmail.com 12

High School Help High school gifted students need advocates. What can you do to help advocate for them? Is there time in the schedule to meet with high school gifted students for a brown bag lunch once or twice a year? These brown bag lunch meetings provide time for the gifted specialist to "check-in" with students. Ask questions to see what is going on with them and how you can help? You, as the gifted specialist, know them best and these students trust you more than any other adult in the school. If your schedule does not allow for face-to-face lunches, could you collaborate with the counselor to have a webinar meeting or send a newsletter. Can these students contact you to talk about their issues or ask for guidance? By reaching out, these students will know that you are still there for them and that you still care. How will you reach out to gifted high school students? Welcome New Board Member Did you take advantage of the opportunity to sign up to help AAGC with conference responsibilities last fall? Many of our members did, and they are being put to work all over the state in various (chosen) capacities. One of these volunteers were recently voted to the AAGC Board: Natalie Tucker as our new Public Relations/Publicity Committee chair. Each of them is already making an impact on getting the word out to our lawmakers and legislatures about the need for gifted education funding. Did you see the posters that Natalie had placed in strategic locations in Montgomery during January's Gifted Education Month? They were attractive, eye- catching, and hopefully, effective at getting our message out. Thanks for coming on board, Natalie! If you would like to help with any committee for our organization, contact Rita Sparks at rsparks4kids@gmail.com. In addition to Public Relations and Legislative Liaison, our committees include: Awards and Grants, with Debbie Dumais, Chairperson; Parent Outreach, with Jo Dale, Chairperson; Bylaws, with Patti Mizell, Chairperson; and the Conference Committee, with Patti Wood and Laurie Sherrell, Co-Chairpersons. 14

Book Review For your young adult readers, a football story that brings the concussion issue down to an understandable, and emotional, level. Clay, a wide receiver, finds returning from big hits to be a challenge; however, the greater challenge in the book becomes when he discovers his coach, Coach Cooper, a former NFL-great, can't remember things anymore. The book effectively addresses concerns parents and kids have playing a sport that used to bring just simple joy, and the conclusion isn't a "happily ever after" but a "best as could be hoped for."
