Patrick Studios Australia established The Academy in 2014 and the program has gained incredible traction since then. This handbook outlines the depth of opportunities that are available at The Academy.
PAGE 3 ACADEMY TRAINING Our academic curriculum is provided by *Virtual School Victoria (VSV). This model allows our students the flexibility to undertake supplementary performing arts training throughout their weekly timetable. Approximately 3 hours a day is allocated to academic study. For VCE students (Yr 11 & 12) there is also optional additional study hours. Internet access is available in our classrooms. * NB: Students who are accepted into The Academy must independently enrol with Virtual School Victoria (VSV). Our Academy will provide a ‘letter of offer’ to successful candidates. This letter must be attached to the enrolment form in order for the application to be successfully approved. It is important to check the enrolment guidelines on the VSV website: www.vsv.vic.edu.au
PAGE 4 ACADEMY TRAINING For each VSV subject, students are assigned a competency teacher. The teaching faculty of VSV are qualified professionals with current VIT registration, proven ICT competencies and who have embraced the possibilities and challenges of teaching via distance modes. When our students require assistance or guidance these teachers are available via Skype, email or telephone. Contact can be made to VSV from the classroom telephone at any time throughout the school day. Regular and ongoing contact between teacher and student is encouraged and expected. Subjects that require practical lessons that The Academy can’t provide, will be conducted on site at the VSV Facility and will be factored into their timetable. In addition to their subject teachers, VSV assign a number of supervisors to oversee all the students of The Academy. In order to ensure the best possible outcome for our student’s education The Academy offers supervisors on site at the studios. Our staff create a conventional school environment, and are able to offer face-to-face assistance. Staff on site are familiar with the content of all units of study and will ensure work is submitted on time, to the best of our student’s ability, and in accordance to the rules set by the VCAA and the VSV. The Academy Director and Supervisors encourage open communication between VSV and our staff concerning each student’s education. Furthermore, The Academy allows for students to complete their SACs and other assessments that need to be supervised at school under our supervision and in accordance with VCAA (Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority). It is The Academy’s policy to withdraw students from all performing arts training if their academic work is not being completed satisfactorily. We regard both the academic and performing arts program as equals.
PAGE 5 VSV COURSE OUTLINE What will I learn? In years 7-10 the VSV’s learning programs are based on the Victorian curriculum. In years 11-12 the VSV follows the curriculum set by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) in our wide range of VCE subjects. Learning programs are organised into manageable segments. Students are guided through the subjects they are studying and provided with tasks to complete, which are then assessed by teachers and returned with feedback. Individual learning programs are developed where appropriate so that all students, regardless of their age or ability can be engaged and challenged with their learning. Launch Pad All students enrolled in Years 7-10 participate in an orientation and assessment program called ‘Launch Pad’. All students will complete this module prior to starting their learning program. Launch Pad will be completed in the first two weeks of Term 1. Launch Pad provides students with a sense of community at the VSV and within the online learning environment. The tasks that students complete in Launch Pad provide the VSV teachers with information about the student’s interests and abilities so a customised learning program can be developed which is appropriate for the student’s learning needs. Requirements for all subjects All students enrolling at VSV require regular and reliable access to a computer/device and the internet. Students will need to login to the school's online portal to communicate and submit work online regularly. They are expected to participate in multiple areas of the online courses. This includes online lessons, forums and interactive activites. All student reports are available online only. The subject information pages on the VSV website has more information about the technology and other requirements for individual subjects. Please read these pages carefully before making subject selections. For a list of subjects available for each year level please head to the website. www.vsv.vic.edu.au
