South Shore Community Calendar and Services July to August 2019 http://www.arc-hss.ca/ A Word from ARC President: Deborah Pearson I would like to thank all who attended our annual general assembly, and to those who missed it, we hope you can join us next year. Arc as an organization is growing and we want to serve the needs of our community via openness, inclusiveness and by our presence in the community. We are thankful to have a vibrant English-speaking community that has existed for years, and is still very active via our churches, schools and community groups. Arc will continue to get better acquainted with our community through different dialogues and programs We have some new partnership initiatives coming for the fall, one of them, a new early childhood development program BRIGHT BEGINNINGS. We have so much to look forward to and we hope you will be there alongside of us informing and providing feedback about your needs. You are the essential ingredient for our success and we need your feedback and presence in order to succeed. I would like to take this moment to thank Kevin Erskine-Henry for his guidance and support and to our new director Christian Lapointe for reintroducing ARC to our community. These fun and creative classes allowed first time artist and some with a little experience to come together and explore their artistic side. These Classes will return in the Fall
SOUTH SHORE CARE AND SHARE program will continue every Wednesday Starting July 3rd to August 14 The SSRC with the support of ARC and our team of volunteers will continue to host the weekly Wednesday activity program for special needs adults during the summer. The aim is to offer English speaking adults a place to meet, take part in activities and stay in touch with friends! The program is open to all special needs adults (there is no charge, however please bring your own lunch). Volunteers Welcome. With Centenninal High School and Elementary schools in GFP, Brossard, Candiac etc welcoming even more students this fall. The Saint-Lambert spring visit was rained out, Sunday August but they will be back on Sunday, August 18 in the village area so come take a walk around yesteryear 18th Saint-Lambert Days are coming and the annual sidewalk sales return from Thursday, August 22, to St Lambert Sunday, August 25 with bargains, food trucks, and a chance to mingle with the neighbours. The Days format is the same as past years music, culture and artists at work, and much more to enjoy. Be sure to get your appetite ready for some outdoor eating. Montreal Montreal and the South Shore are great places for Stay Vacations… Summer Between the Jazz Festival and Just for Laughs festival, there are endless free outdoor family events. Cultural community, music and theatre festivals. Mark the The Montreal International Fireworks Competition: Great Family fun or a cheap date night… The best Dates South Shore viewing places are at: Champlain CEGEP, Seaway Park or you can also go to the Longueuil Summer Metro for a great view, or walk up the staircase near the metro to the Jacque Cartier Bridge which closes to traffic at 8 pm each show time: Plan to come early and leave late as the traffic is heavy Time ….Best to take public transit. July-August Information Sessions & Workshops Wednesday Mental illnesses often present many challenges for family members. Periods of remission may be followed by relapses, and hope becomes despair. Family members play a critical role in helping loved ones seek help and embark on a journey of recovery, but it’s not easy! AMI Quebec offers a July 24 family support group that meet every second Wednesday evening from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Aug. 7-21 598 Bellevue N (Greenfield Park) cross Street Park lane. Meetings are July 10-24, August 7. The South Shore Women’s Ways Circle is a small group of like-hearted women who meet once a month. The Circle offers women of all ages and background the opportunity to find their authentic Aug. 27th voice and practice using it in a life-affirming way. We also use the Circle to connect to nature’s rhythms and to acknowledge the beauty, wisdom and power of the feminine sprit. No previous experience of this type of gathering is necessary. All that is needed is an open heart. A donation is collected in support of a local women’s organization. The meeting dates throughout the summer are Tuesday, July 16 and Tuesday, August 27. We meet at 83, Churchill Street in Greenfield Park at 7:30 p.m. Newcomers are most welcomed. Our objective is to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives. 7:00pm A Death Café is a discussion group directed with no agenda, objectives or themes. Although a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session, many people find talking about July 31 death to be therapeutic. Death Cafés are always offered in an accessible, respectful and confidential August 30 space, with no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action. (Voluntary small donations are accepted to offset the cost of coffee and snacks). The South Shore Group meets Sept. 26 once a month (See schedule of dates) at 7 p.m. at 83 Churchill blvd., Greenfield Park. Art Classes are regularly offered with Artist Ingrid Silbermayr at ‘Michaels’ on Taschereau Blvd. in Greenfield Park every Monday and Wednesday evening between 6:30 and 8:30. Two hours of a creative journey with hands-on lessons in techniques; Watercolour, acrylic and mixed media! Cost: $20.00 for a two-hour class with a 3-student minimum in attendance. The volunteer community organization La Mosaïque is asking for donations of large second hand appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, freezers, ovens and stoves in good condition for distribution to underprivileged families who need them urgently. Hot Weather. Be Prepared! Tips for Seniors and People with Disabilities: Seniors and people with disabilities are more prone to heat-related health problems. Many are on combinations of medications that further slow the body’s ability to deal with heat. Here are some general guidelines to provide basic information about maintaining well being when the weather is hot. 1. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER – don’t wait until you’re thirsty. You lose a lot of water through perspiration. Carry a water bottle with you if you are able to. 2. AVOID ALCOHOL AND CAFFEINE – they cause your body to lose more water. 3. STAY IN A WELL-VENTILATED AREA – circulation of air helps you keep cool. Open a window or turn on a fan or air conditioner. Go to public areas that have air condition i.e.: Shopping Centres, Libraries 4. DRESS “COOL” - Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing, sunscreen, and a Broad-brimmed hat. 5. AVOID UNNECESSARY ACTIVITY - especially in a hot environment. I.e. Gardening, Walks 6. KNOW YOUR MEDICATION – the heat may affect your reaction to certain medications contact your pharmacist or call 811 with any questions or concerns 7. HAVE A FRIEND CHECK UP ON YOU – plan to have a friend check on you at different times of the day when the temperature is extremely high. 8. PLAN AHEAD – try to plan your outside activities during the coolest part of the day, early in the morning or later in the evening. 9. TAKE YOUR TIME – leave plenty of extra time so you don’t have to run around in a hurry. 10. EAT LIGHT MEALS. (During the cooler periods prepare extra meals and eaten latter) What are the symptoms to watch for? Exhaustion (fatigue) Dehydration) (dry mouth) Headaches Dizziness Confusion Fainting If these symptoms are present, call Info-Santé at 8-1-1 or consult a health professional. If there is fever in addition to those symptoms, this may be heatstroke, which is a medical emergency. In this case, call 9-1-1 to get help.
