LIONS CLUB OF KIAMA KI-LINES MARCH 2020—50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION FROM PRESIDENT JIM were very grateful when they found out what we were do- ing there. That went for all the towns we visited. Looking forward to seeing you all at our next meeting and please remember to let us know if you are or aren’t attending our 50th Anniversary on 12 March. President Jim CUPID’S UNDIE FUN RUN What is the “Cupid’s Undie Fun Run” about? It is an annual event that isn’t about running or winning…or even undies. It’s about putting the “fun” into fundraising for the Children’s Tumour Foundation (CTF) and helping adults, children and families impacted by Neurofibromatosis (NF) find a pathway from fear to hope. NF is a genetic disorder that affects 1 in every 2,500 people and causes tumours to grow on nerves throughout the body, including the brain and spine. It is un- predictable, progressive and there is currently no cure. The local ‘Undie Run’ was at Surf Beach on 16 Feb 2020 with the Kiama Surf Life Saving Club being the base. The Kiama Lions Club cooked for the ’runners’, slaving over hot stoves at the Kiama Surf Club kitchen. Photo L-R above: President Jim, Cheryl, Michael, Chanel, Dennis, & Ian SOUTH COAST COACH TRIP A group of Kiama Lions, family, and friends, travelled by a Kiama Scenic Tours coach to the South Coast on 18 February 2020 to support some of the communities affected by the 2019-2020 bushfires. The purpose was to spend some time in these communities gaining an appreciation of what had happened, and to purchase goods and services from the locals. Ray and Faye Redgrave organised the trip after Ray had travelled to the area for business after the bushfires and talked to some of the people affected. We first stopped at Sussex Inlet for morning tea, with a number purchasing goods from the local bakery and books from the Sussex Inlet Lions Club 2nd hand bookstore (photo to right). (Continued on page 3)

Page 4 KI-LINES March 2020 Edition (Continued from page 3) Next stop was Milton for lunch, with the travellers seeking out eateries to suit their tastes and quench their thirsts, and spend- ing more dollars in the local shops. After a relaxing break in Milton, the travellers headed north & turned off the highway to Lake Conjola, where there was major damage from the fires. There was limited damage at Lake Conjola Village itself, but many houses, vehicles, and other structures were destroyed in Conjola Park and near the high- way. Photo to the right is the ‘Lake Conjola Friendly Grocer’ where the travellers stocked up on vari- ous ice creams, other goods, and wines, a healthy injection of cash to this community. On the road back to the Princes Highway we saw much bush destroyed, with a number of trees cut down as the roots had burnt, increasing the risk of them randomly falling over. The massive amount of burnt forest, homes, vehicles, and other structures from the Sus- sex Inlet area to the Ulladulla area with the burnt areas ex- tending west to the escarpment was very confronting.

OUR HISTORY IN 192 PAGES It took around 3 years, but the Kiama Lions Club’s 50 year history, or most of it, has been researched and documented by Russell Fredericks and Gerry McInerney and is printed in a very attractive publication. The important issue at this point is that the book is now for sale with delivery on and from the 12th March 50th Year celebration function. It would be great if all Lions purchased a copy (one or more) and encourage family, friends and com- munity contacts to buy one. Pre-paid orders are being taken at $25 per copy by EFT, just insert your name and “book” as the reference, which will reduce the Treasurer’s work on the night. The book will be available to collect on the night and there will be a formal book launch during the 50th Year celebration function.
