Page 2 Dim Bulb March 2018 Presidents Column High Beemers M/C Club PO Box 3127 February has come and gone. I did not do much riding in the Sparks NV 89432 month of February. I started the month by taking a car trip to Las Vegas to take in the sights and watch our friends granddaughter play softball. President Fred Barrie I ended the month by taking a car trip to Seattle. While Sandie 775.745.1936 was attending a sewing conference, I spent the time sightseeing around Seattle and up to Birch Bay. flbspk@aol.com Vice President I want to thank Tracy for his efforts working on our forum and Russ for his efforts to understand our Facebook page. Checkout Russ Ristine our High Beemers website, Larie has upgraded it. On February 775.742.5866 14th a two hour session was held to update the progress of our russ.ristine@gmail.com endeavor and decide on what steps are necessary to move for- ward with our quest to expand our club’s use of the Website, Fa- Treasurer cebook and Forums. Ernie Baragar As we all learn to use the Website, Facebook and Forums, we 775.219.8881 will be able to better communicate our common motorcycle inter- ernie@highbeemers.org ests and setup club and impromptu rides. This will allow Jim to HIghbeemers Website work on the goal to eliminate his job (newsletter) by utilizing our Website, Facebook and Forums to disseminate all our club Larie Trippet news. 775.690.4936 Ernie has been busy keeping our membership list up to date and Www.highbeemers.org has setup Pay Pal for our club business activities. Even with my Newsletter Editor inability to hit the right keys, I paid for my hat order using it. It Jim Morrow would be appreciated to have our members use Pay Pal as much as possible. 775.501.0778 hbnleditor@highbeemers.org A member approached me and said that I mentioned some ideas for local rides at our Annual Meeting, but I talked too fast or he The High Beemers M/C of North- ern Nevada BMWMOA Chartered couldn’t write fast enough! Club #337, BMWRA Charter #75, AMA Charter #3185301 So, here is a recap of the rides and you can also find these rides written up in the HBMC Forums under “Street Ride Ide- as”. https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/highbeemers/street-ride- ideas-f11 Volume 28 Issue 03 The High Beemers M/C of Northern Nevada BMWMOA Chartered Club #337, BMWRA Charter #75, AMA Charter #3185301
Page 3 Dim Bulb March 2018 ——— Reno to Denio overnight. Reno to Fernley to Gerlack (take a break at Bruno’s) to Cedarville (lunch at Country Hearth) to Lakeview (break and gas stop) hwy 140 to Denio ( overnight at Denio Junction Motel *make a reservation or it is on to Winnemucca / understand there is gas now in Denio) to Winnemucca to Reno. ———— Portola Ca. to Clio Just west of Portola at Chalet View Lodge (Starbucks) to Clio. The road (Clio State 40A Road) is a hard packed dirt road and when not wet is very rideable. This road takes you under a railroad bridge and into Clio. When to arrive at Clio there are sev- eral ways to continue your ride. Towards Sierraville, up to the Gold Lake area or back into Graeagle. ———- Taylorsville Ca. Ride to Taylorsville CA. to have lunch at Young’s Market Company. Take 70 past Quincy to 89, go north to the Arlington road that takes you into Taylorsville. After lunch you can continue up to Antelope and over to 395 back to Reno. Or, take N. Valley Road to Greenville. Then take 89 to 147 along the east side of Lake Almanor join 36 to Susanville and back to Reno. ———- Greenville Ca. Ride to Greenville for lunch at Anna’s. After Quincy take 70 to 89 into Greenville. Af- ter lunch, return to Quincy and back to Reno or take 89 to 147 to 36 into Susanville returning to Reno. ——- Short rides for breakfast or lunch. Tail Dragger Cafe at Minden Airport. Fox & Hound Smokehouse at top of Kingsbury grade. Los dos Hermanos in Sierraville. ——— Downieville Ride Ride to Downieville on hiway 49 out of Sierraville for lunch. In town is Two Rivers Cafe or just west of downtown up the hill is Coyoteville Cafe. If interested in making a day of it, you can continue on 49 to Nevada City. Then take 20 to I80 to Reno. ———— Lost Coast Ride from Weott Ca. Just north of Weott on hwy 101 take the Mattole Rd. to the Lost Coast. The road has many twists and in and out of shadows from the forest. The road is not well maintained with many potholes that are hard to see in the shadows. Halfway thru the area is Petrolia. There is a general store that can be used for a break stop. After going along the coast the road turns inland ending up in Ferndale on 101. Page 4 Dim Bulb March 2018 ———- Picnic Table rides. If you are interested in taking a lunch and just getting out of town there are two places I know of. The first one is Sierraville at the Sierraville Store and Gas Pump. Several picnic tables are located just outside the store. Typically we buy a cuppa coffee or soda pop for using their tables. Another location is in downtown Down- ieville. Next-door to the Two Rivers Café you can park and walk down to the river’s edge there are several tables located there. Enjoying a picnic lunch and listening to the water running by makes for a pretty good day. ————— Baker City Or. to Joesph. Take 86 east out of Baker City to Half Way. Just east of Half Way take N. Pine Rd. northbound. Following N. Pine Rd. it turns into NFD Road 39. Follow it to Wallowa Mnt. Road. Take it to Imnaha hwy into Joesph. While in Joseph take 82 to the south end of Wallowa Lake. When there look for the Wallowa Lake Tramway. It is worth the time to ride up and lookout on the beautiful area. ———— Apache Junction AZ. to Roosevelt. Take 88 which is Apache trail out of Apache Junction. The road is decent until Tor- tilla. Just past there it turns to stone. That is as far as I went on my GTL. If your bike can handle the road continue on to hwy 188 to Roosevelt. On another trip I road hwy 188 along Lake Roosevelt enjoying the wilderness area. —————— It was mentioned at the Annual meeting that if dues are not received by mid March the current member will be dropped from our list. Page 5 Dim Bulb March 2018 The February 19th Breakfast Ride by Fred Barrie Due to cold and snow the February monthly breakfast ride was held at Red Hut in Reno. Nick, Tracy, Richard, Ernie, Larry and Fred braved the elements to participate in conversation and telling of stories. Page 6 Dim Bulb March 2018 Members Rides February 2018 February 9—warm weather, Fred Barries says “ If I ride it, got to wash it!” ……. February 13: Jim Morrow and Las Vegas resident Rod took advantage of the warm weather to enjoy a ride to Bisbee AZ. Great museum in Tombstone and the Queen mine tour in Bisbee is terrific! Good craft beer in Bisbee….. Here one of the guides/ miner showing us how to set the dynamite in a rock wall—they only walked to the end of the tunnel for the explosion! Yikes Jim did an accounting of his costs (placed the origi- nal accounting on our Forum site—there were a few errors … here is corrected version) ……………………. Volume 28 Issue 03 The High Beemers M/C of Northern Nevada BMWMOA Chartered Club #337, BMWRA Charter #75, AMA Charter #3185301
Page 7 Dim Bulb March 2018 • The Tombstone trip was 6 days, 5 nights, 3 hotels. Total came to $611 or $102 per day of which • $161 was gas, • $192 was food, • $258 was hotel over three nights. This was with K1200LT getting between 46 to 52mpg @ 10-over the limit mostly, faster than my typical 5-over pace. • Estimate $27 a day for gasoline, I used pre- mium. Regular might save ? 5% off this. • We ate well with drinks for $32 per day. If I camp and make my own breakfast and dinner that might reduce it somewhat but estimate at least $28 to $30 a day in food. • Camping can have fees per night as well - maybe $20 a day where for this trip it was $86 a day for lodging (stayed with Rod 2 nights for free out of the 5). I propose an estimate of expenses on a motorcycle trip are ~$80 a day for camping, ~$145 a day if hotels. Just thought you might find that interesting … go to the forum and comment—what are your costs? Of course all this excludes the cost of the bike and gear and farkles. Ai- eee!, add those costs in and a trip like this makes a cruise ship for a week look cheap, including airfare! But we love riding cycles … February 16: Fred Barrie says “This time of the year, besides getting a ride in there is also the ability to hit the slopes. The snow has been minimal but yet enough to enjoy a day of skiing” Volume 28 Issue 03 The High Beemers M/C of Northern Nevada BMWMOA Chartered Club #337, BMWRA Charter #75, AMA Charter #3185301
Page 8 Dim Bulb March 2018 Upcoming Rides and Events Breakfast Rides: 3rd Monday of each month. Meet at Starbuck’s on Mt. Rose Highway at Wedge Parkway for a 9am departure. Back in Reno about noon. Members Rides: Check the club forum site http://highbeemers.org/ regularly for updates and post your own ride! BMW Motorcycle Owners of America has news and rides for you to consider @ http:// www.bmwmoa.org/ —————————————————————————————————————————— HBMC Members, Many of you have already signed up for our new HBMC Forum. Once you do, you are subject to receiving a few “junk mail” type emails from Tapatalk that are not di- rectly related to our HBMC forum. There is an easy way to prevent these emails. • The easiest way is to scroll to the bottom of the Tapatalk junk email and you will see a link to “Manage your email settings”. You can go there and turn off the items you don’t want. • At a minimum, turn off the top 2 - “Tapatalk Updates” and “Weekly Topics and Recommendations”, and you’ll get rid of the junk mail. • The rest of the check boxes relate to email notifications that would be (mostly) useful to you as you use the forum, but you are free to adjust this as you see fit. If you haven’t already signed up for the forum, the instructions are included in the at- tached document. Page 9 Dim Bulb March 2018 2018 High Beemer Rides ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------- The following are the planned dates of the rides for the upcoming year. If you would like to be the leader of any of the High Beemer CR or GS rides, let me know via email (flbspk@aol.com) or at the January 28th dinner meeting. Breakfast Rides (BR) are on the third Monday of each month, starting at Starbucks on Wedge Parkway. Doug Laird or his backup (Nick) will lead the rides. Destinations are determined by the riders in attendance. Usually back in Reno by 12-12:30pm. These rides are held year around and if the weather is inclement everyone is encouraged to show up in an alternate vehicle. Club Rides (CR) are road rides that occur on third Saturday or Sunday of each month. The ride leader will de- termine the ride date, gathering point, route, and lunch location. The ride leader shares the details of the ride with everyone via our club forum, email and newsletter. On the day of the ride, the leader takes a headcount at the gathering point and then calls ahead to the restaurant to make a reservation for the group. The route is a road ride, usually several hours long, possibly with a break stop on the way to the lunch site. The return trip is often open, allowing riders the option of returning to Reno as a group, or on their own. Off Road Rides (GS) are on the fourth Saturday or Sunday of each month. The GS leader follows the same procedures as a Club Ride, except that the GS ride might include a “brown bag” lunch (rather than a restau- rant lunch) due to routing. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------- April 2018 BR: Apr 16 CR: Apr 21 or 22nd (leader: Fred Barrie) GS: Apr 28 or 29 May 2018 BR: May 21 CR: May 19 or 20 (leader: Bob G) GS: May 26 or 27 June 2018 BR: Jun 18 CR: Jun 16 or 17 (leader: Doug Laird) GS: Jun 23 or 24 July 2018 BR: Jul 16 CR: Jul 21 or 22 GS: Jul 28 or 29 August 2018 BR: Aug 20 CR: Aug 18 or 19 (leader: Amaury G) GS: Aug 25 or 26 September 2018 BR: Sep 17 CR: Sep 15 or 16 GS: Sep 22 or 23 (leader: Mike Wallace) October 2018 Annual BBQ: Oct 14 January 2019 Jan 1: Brunch and Road Ride Jan 27: Annual Meeting/Dinner Volume 28 Issue 03 The High Beemers M/C of Northern Nevada BMWMOA Chartered Club #337, BMWRA Charter #75, AMA Charter #3185301

Page 16 Dim Bulb March 2018 Group Rider’s Responsibilities: 1 – Arrive prepared (full gas tank) and on time. 2 – Ride in Formation: (Highway – Staggered Formation) Ride Leader should be in left third of lane. Next rider should be in right third of lane, next rider back to the left third of lane and so on. Preferably there should be a two second gap between riders. Riders should ride single file when the road conditions are curvy; there is poor visibility, and poor road surfaces, when entering/ leaving the highway or other situations when an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is required. MSF recommends a minimum of two seconds between riders. NOTE: Avoid side by side formation. If you needed to avoid a hazard, you would not have room to do so. 3 – If separated from the group, don’t panic. Each rider should know before hand the destination and be provided with directions. 4 – For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation warrants. 5 - If a rider plans to ride on their own and eventually meet up with the group, the ride leader should be advised prior to departure. 6 - If a rider plans to break off from the group they should advise the ride leader at a rally point or meeting location prior to leaving the group. 7 - All riders/passengers must obey state law and wear an approved helmet. NOTE: No Alcohol should be consumed on a club ride. 8 - It is highly recommended that all riders/passengers wear protective clothing while on club rides. 9 - We represent motorcyclists to motorists so PLEASE drive appropriately. 10 - This is a group ride that riders have chosen to participate in. Riders: please be patient, toler- ant and respectful of others needs; please try to stay together and look out for the well being of other participants. 11 – Periodically check the riders following in your rear view mirror. If you see a rider falling be- hind, slow down so they may catch up. If all riders in the group use this technique, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up. 12 – Each rider is responsible for the rider behind him. The rider should SAFELY pause at each major turn to ensure the following rider stays on the route. The rider waits until the following rider is able to continue. 13 - Someone from the ride should write a story of the trip for the newsletter editor. Enjoy the ride!
