Presidents Report Well here we are at the end of another great year with the festive season fast approaching. Thank you to the members who have organised and run the events which we have enjoyed recently in our varied and interesting Club programme. There are many more to come now and on into the New Year courtesy of our very active and proactive planning group. Please refer to the newsletter to see what is planned and when. Don’t forget to let the walk leaders know as early as possible of your intention to participate in any of the events to assist them in their planning and organisation and to help things run smoothly. Change is inevitable in most things and our Club is no exception. Vaughan Cowan has decided to step away from his role as U3A/mid week liaison and organiser after many years in the role and in the interim John Boehm has stepped up to take over. Also our chief walks planner Gary McDonald has seen the necessity to step away from that role next year to concentrate on family responsibilities. There will no doubt be other changes too as we approach our AGM in February with the need to nominate and elect the committee we would like to run our Club for the next 12 months. Please make sure that there are nominations for all positions before the AGM on February 5th 2019. That’s just around the corner. Sadly we note the passing of former member of Benalla Bushwalking Club Fay Dawson who passed away in Bendigo on 3rd December 2018 after a long illness. Faye was involved in our Club for many years from the beginning until her move to Heathcote and then Bendigo. Our thoughts are with Ian and their family and friends. Please be safe and happy over the coming Christmas and New Year period as we look forward to continuing our activities in the great outdoors during 2019. Doug Kneen, President. Follow us on Face book!! Benalla Bushwalking Club now has its own Facebook page. Sue Pendergast has done a terrific job in creating a platform for the sharing of news, photos, coming events etc. If you haven't already done so, have a look by either googling Benalla Bushwalking Club Facebook or follow the link on the club's website home page (www.benallabushwalkingclub.org.au). Contributions to the Facebook page are welcomed, however to avoid possible inadvertant disclosure of a contributors personal Facebook content any contributions should be forwarded through one of the following people for uploading. Snippets Club Maps A selection of topographic maps are stored at Gill's house at 15 Faithfull Street, Benalla. Mobile 0419 585 996. Contact Gill to arrange for maps you may wish to borrow. Gear for Loan The club has set up a register of hiking gear which people would be willing to lend to new walkers (only for duration of activity). Items include day and overnight packs, sleeping mats, tents, stoves, wet weather gear etc. If you wish to borrow equipment, or have equipment you would be willing to loan, contact Gill Sydes on 0419 585 996. Club Website The club has a new website up and running at www.benallabushwalkingclub.org.au. Some areas of the new site require password access and a global username and password have been circulated to members. The use of a global password means the password recovery links on the site will not function correctly so members who forget the password will have to contact another member to refresh. To access either: Google Benalla Bushwalking Club. or Go to www.benallabushwalkingclub.org.au/ Club E-mail address The clubs’ email address is now: benallabushwalkingclub@gmail.com Important Notice As the costs of producing and distributing printed copies of the club's newsletter are increasing, and access to the newsletter is readily available via email or the club website, provision of hard copy newsletters has ceased. Members who wish to receive newsletters by email and have not yet provided an email address to the club, should do so to the Secretary, who will arrange its inclusion into the email distribution list. Access to the current and two previous editions of the newsletter are always available on the club website (www.benallabushwalkingclub.org.au) without the need to log in. The club regrets any inconvenience caused by this decision which is being implemented to help reduce costs and keep membership fees as low as possible. -4-
Walk Reports Eagle Peaks Sun Nov 11 A beautiful clear day for this walk in the high country. We drove via Sheepyard Flat and parked at Eight Mile Gap to begin the walk up the ridge. Rested for a minutes silence at 11 o'clock for Remembrance Day, marking a century since the Armistice of 1918. The peace of the bush was a fitting contrast to the horrors of that war. If only it had been the "War to end all wars"... From then on the ridge narrowed, with dramatic views as the land dropped away on each side. A steep scramble bought us to the top of Eagles Peak and expansive 360 views of the surrounding high country. We rested and ate lunch among a small copse of snow gums. Then kept our footing to walk back down the ridge. An enjoyable day out in this great landscape. Hamish McPherson Mt Speculation Wed/Fri Nov 28-30 There were 9 walkers that enjoyed very warm conditions at Mt Speculation for 2 nights. After setting up camp in the second saddle below the summit and most walkers would agree it has some of the best views around. We then made our way towards Mt Koonika and although we didn’t get to the the cairn at the summit it was a good walk along a very faint footpad then a bush bash back down to the Speculation track and then back to camp. In warmer condition the next day some of us headed out towards the Crosscut with 2 walkers making it to Stanley Named Spur and back (well done Brian and Mary about 9hrs total walk time). Gill, Willy and Joan walked the Speculation track down to Catherine Saddle and enjoyed a lunch on the grassed area before returning to camp. This location has the best views and we did have some pretty good sunrises and sunsets. An early start on the Friday saw us negotiate the rugged 10km track back to Lake Cobbler (took us 1hr) and then down and back into the King Valley and onto Benalla arriving just before lunch and very high temps. Special thanks to our drivers Lynne and Brian and thanks to all who came and enjoyed probably the best spot in the high country. Gary MacDonald Canoe Camp Nagambie Fri/Sun Nov 30-Dec 2 What a fun weekend and so lovely to be out on the water. Overall the weather was good. We were back from our paddle late Friday afternoon (along the Goulburn River and return through the lake, ~ 3 km ) before the wind picked up. Saturday was warm and sunny. We paddled up the Goulburn, explored a little creek, complete with water lilies, boat shed and lovely white ‘Monet style’ bridge. Lunch was on a green grassy slope. Brian got photos of the brass horse statues on the river bank - magnificent. The water traffic was increasing, so, good to be finished by mid afternoon. 11.3 km. -5-
Sunday was windy, so we drove round to Major’s Creek, which was quite sheltered. Paddling was leisurely with lots of chatter and catching up. Of course there were many tree stumps and logs to go around, under or over. Several kingfishers were seen and/or heard. The flower found along the banks is as yet unidentified - could it just be a weed? About 6 km. Some were able to keep their feet dry whilst launching their kayaks and disembarking! With dodgy knees, I just get in and out from the water - not so bad in summer. Mary picked a great spot for lunch - pity about the dead kangaroo! Len and Tony found a better spot with a great log (for sitting on). Thanks for your company Brian, Gayle, Len, Mary, Judy and Tony!! Gill Sydes -6-
