SCVT President’s Message Wow, can you believe it’s already October? Summer is over, the days are getting shorter and all I can say is this year sure went by fast! Halloween is just a few weeks away and then the Holiday season starts. It’s been a very busy year for our club, and I sincerely want to thank everyone who hosted or helped to host an event. We’re working on a date for the Awards Banquet, which is probably the most difficult part of being SCVT President. The Awards Banquet is fun, but believe me it’s a lot of work. I’m sorry to say that Eddi and I missed Birds on the Wharf this year. When we heard it was canceled we made some plans with family. But I heard that Jenny did a wonderful job with all the Raffle Baskets and her help was greatly appreciated by the other clubs. Thank You Jenny, you did our club proud! Sandie Kay won the People’s Choice award for her Resale Red `57 T-bird and Charlie and Claire won favorite `56 with their Peacock Blue. If you haven’t gotten a call from Joe Ryan, you may be getting one soon, or better yet, you could call him and volunteer for a position. We have two positions that are looking for the right person to fill them, they are, Secretary, and Editor. Skip and Casey have done a wonderful job as Editors of the Fan, but they want a rest. I’m sure we have some creative people out there who would welcome the challenge. You don’t need to commit for 2 years, one year would be a big help. And now we’re into Homecoming Season. I like the way Bill Croxton has kept everybody notified this year so they remember what they signed up for, and how Skip listed the Homecomings in the Fan. People do forget and those reminders are great! That’s all I have for now. I hope everyone has a wonderfully Spooky Halloween. Remember, this month’s meeting is the Third Friday. Bring donations to the next meeting. Please collect, count, and separately bag shampoo, rinse, lotion and soaps. Cliff Monroe has asked the Thrift Shop in Willow Glen for unused books and volunteered to pick them up with the help of Bobbie & Les Miller. Sandie Kay suggested we might also scout garage sales for unsold books and ask for donations to the veteran gift bags. Drop Box Account. Don Reisinger is looking into how an account can be set up for our club. NEW BUSINESS: FAN Publishing. Editor Skip Doughty reported that he currently produces two versions of the FAN. The version posted on the public website does not contain contact information for officers and others who do not want their information made public. He recommended the club post the FAN in the Members Only section of the SCVT website instead. Following discussion, Joe Ryan made the motion to make this change. Patrick Ford seconded. Motion passed. Generic Email. To address the email privacy issue, SCVT will look into setting up a generic email for the SCVT President. This would enable non-members to contact SCVT while protecting the personal email of the individual person holding the office. Monthly Meeting Minutes. Since the minutes of each meeting are published in the FAN, Webmaster, Larry Maness, moved that we stop posting a duplicate copy on the SCVT website. Following discussion, the motion was seconded and passed. Board Meeting. President Gene Cox reported that he will be scheduling a Board Meeting in November. Awards Banquet. To be scheduled. Bill Mann explained that while our T-Birds have generators, they are getting old and are costly to repair. As an alternative, owners can install a Chevrolet alternator for $75-$125 with an additional $90+ for the adapter kit. It's an economical approach and works fine. Bill cautioned, though, “If your generator is working good, leave it alone.” Gene Cox asked how many members have had vapor lock. (Vapor lock occurs when liquid fuel can’t get into the fuel line due to high temperatures.) Members offered various solutions. Gene Cox recommended using a chilled neck cooling rag to cool off the line. Don Reisinger suggested insulating the fuel line as a preventative. Carl Epolite advised that a simple wooden clothes pin would work as a “heat sink” and draw the heat from the line. FUND RAISING / RAFFLE: Margaret Moore was home taking care of Barry who had surgery today, so Claire Affrunti conducted the raffle drawing held throughout the meeting. MEETING ADJOURNED: President Gene Cox adjourned the meeting at 9:25 pm. Next meeting is on Friday, October 12, 2018 at West Valley College. y story starts in 1981 in Eden Prairie, MN. While working for Tonka Toys, I A T-bird Story had already acquired my first 2 “classics:” a `60 T-bird and a `66 Mustang. Both by Don Reisinger came along to California. The T-bird died of fatal rust in 1985 but the Mustang will be road worthy again soon after a long period of non-use. In the summer of 1981, I was working in my front yard when a `57 T-bird came to an abrupt halt in front of our house. The driver got out and said his brakes had suddenly locked up and to my good fortune, he had to stop right there. After thinking about it for a bit and talking to the owner, we decided to try a few things before calling a tow truck. Started at the pedal which was not moving. Moved on to the master cylinder, full of fluid and looked pretty clean. Next took a wrench and loosened the nut holding the brake line to the master cylinder and that was all it took. Still don’t know how that cured the problem but the owner thanked me and was on his way. But, I was hooked. Had to have a “Baby Bird.” Moved to California in late 1982 to help launch a startup - Amiga Computer - as #3 and the first real employee - #1 & #2 were founders. In 1984, Amiga sold to Commodore and all of the employees got a nice reward for 2 years of hard work and small paychecks. After that incident in 1981, I had made a promise to myself that if Amiga worked out, I would get a `57. After searching locally, didn’t know about SCVT or Bill Mann, I went to SJC and bought an LA Times since we were taking my kids to Disneyland over the Christmas Holidays. Thought there just might be one available in LaLa land, and there was. It was located in Northridge, sort of on the way to Orange County, “restored” and at a reasonable price. Called the owner and made arrangements to see the car when we were on our way to LA a couple of days later. Found the address – way before Google maps, had to use the old foldable type – and it turned out to be a mortuary. Owner of the `57 was the owner of the mortuary. Drove the car, made an offer and it was a done deal. Then made necessary arrangements, flew down, picked up the car and drove back to San Jose with no problems. Found out I could have had a choice between a `57 `Vette and the T-bird. I know I made the right choice both then and now. Joined SCVT a short time later and that began our 30+ year experience with the best car club in the world. It has been an honor for Laurie and myself to, not just be involved, but to serve as officers in various capacities over the many years. And, we may not be done yet. The key element that separates SCVT from other clubs is the active and involved membership. (continued on next page) The Early Bird Fan 7 October 2018
(continued from previous page) The `57, as well as the original `60 Bird and Mustang, were all intended to be drivers. For the `57, I wanted a car that was reliable and - other than fuel pumps – it has been that with very few problems and has fulfilled that driver roll. For the most part, for a 60+ year old car, it has been maintenance free. Through the years a number of what I would call updates have occurred. The carb was replaced in 1995 and retuned by Pete Gray after we moved back to the bay area from a 4-year hiatus in Riverside. The car was repainted in something like Starmist Blue for the 1997 regional, the old white vinyl convertible top was replaced by Frank Marino with the dark blue canvas in 2001 and the bucket seat interior with 1984 Blazer console were added in 2002. Somewhere in there the transmission was rebuilt. There have been a few more additions / replacements under the hood and disc brakes were added in 2015 (another story for another time, but ask me before you order yours!) that resulted in having to use 15” rims and tires. However, the speedometer is now quite accurate! And, a few times it has found its way to Broadway Motors for one thing or another. As “retirement” - or something like that - approaches, there are a few things that need to be addressed so we’re ready to have non-stop fun, fun, fun in the coming years including a repaint and re-chrome. That and a couple more under the hood updates and our trusty blue bird of happiness will be ready to take us on new adventures with SCVT for many years to come. There are still many more backroads to explore. BTW: Like the venerable Paul Harvey, the rest to the Eden Prairie story. Back in 2004, when I was actively marketing the deck protectors, I got a call from a member of the Minnesota Club. They were preparing for their one annual overnighter (just one???) and he wanted a deck protector as he had just gotten his car back after being painted. We got to talking since I had lived there and told him my story about that day when this hammer mechanic fixed a guy’s T-bird in front of my house. There was a pregnant pause. He asked, did you live in Eden Prairie? Why, yes indeed I replied. My new customer was that guy who back in 1981 had fatefully come to a halt at my place and started this automotive love affair. It is a small world, after all. Now, can you get the song out of your head??? — Thanks to Bill Croxton for making SCVT Car of the Month an Early Bird Fan feature — Cars of the Month for 2018 Jan. Fan Mail HOTEL KEY CARDS Ever wonder what is on your magnetic key card? Answer: A. Customer's name B. Customer's partial home address C. Hotel room number D. Check-in date and out dates E. Customer’s credit card number and expiration date! When you turn them in to the front desk your personal information is there for any employee to access by simply scanning the card in the hotel scanner. An employee can take a hand full of cards home and using a scanning device, access the information onto a laptop computer and go shopping at your expense. Simply put, hotels do not erase the information on these cards until an employee reissues the card to the next hotel guest. At that time, the new guest's information is electronically 'overwritten' on the card and the previous guest’s information is erased in the overwriting process. But until the card is rewritten for the next guest, it usually is kept in a drawer at the front desk with Membership Anniversaries – October YOUR INFORMATION ON IT! The bottom line is: Keep the cards, take them home with you, or destroy them. NEVER leave them behind in the room or room wastebasket, and NEVER turn them into the front desk when you check out of a room. They will not charge you for the card (it's illegal) and you'll be sure you are not leaving a lot of valuable personal information on it that could be easily lifted off with any simple scanning device card reader. For the same reason, if you arrive at the airport and discover you still have the card key in your pocket, do not toss it in an airport trash basket. Take it home and destroy it by cutting it up, especially through the electronic information strip! If you have a small magnet, pass it across the magnetic strip several times. Then try it in the door, it will not work. It erases everything on the card. - Thanks to Larry Johnston The Early Bird Fan 11 October 2018
Fan Mail (continued) Congratulations on your engagement! “The owner of a magnificent 1956 Chevrolet convertible, wrote to say he had restored the car to perfection over the last few years, and sent this: “On a very warm summer afternoon he decided to take his car to town. It needed gas, as the gauge was practically on empty, but he wanted ice cream, so he headed first to his favorite ice cream shop. He had trouble finding a parking space and had to park the car down a side street. “He noticed a group of young guys standing around smoking cigarettes and eyeing the car rather covetously. He was a bit uneasy leaving it there, but people often take interest in such an old and well-preserved car, so he went off to enjoy his ice cream. The line at the ice cream shop was long and it took Lucy Clark him quite a while to return to his car. When he did, his worst fears were realized ... his car was gone. & “He called the police and reported the theft. About ten minutes later the police called him to say they had found the Doc Dockter car abandoned near a gas station a few miles out of town. It was unharmed and he was relieved. It seems just before he called, the police had received a call from a young woman who was an employee at a self-service gas station. She told Who is this? them that three young men had driven in with this beautiful old convertible. One of them came to the window and prepaid for 20 dollars’ worth of gas. “Then all three of them walked around the car. Then they all got in the car and drove off, without filling the tank. The question is, why would anybody steal a car, pay for gas that they never pumped and then abandon the car later and walk away? “They couldn’t find where to put the gas!” “My first ride. Top speed about 75 mph downhill, but the radio worked great!” - Thanks to Margaret Moore The Early Bird Fan 12 October 2018
