A Letter from Pastor Denny Where do you find the sacred, the holy? The Nichols chapel? Your favorite pew? A Sunday school class? We are accustomed to finding the holy in designated places. However, are we so conditioned to experiencing the holy in assigned spaces that we are unaware of the holy in our normal routines? Richard Rohr tells the story of Vincent Donovan, a missionary in Africa, who wrote of working with the Masai many years ago. The people were sitting very respectfully listening to him as the priest, teaching them about the Seven Sacraments of the Church. He described a sacrament as physical encounter with the Holy. Vincent could tell the elders were not very satisfied when he said there were only seven such moments. One of the elders raised his hand and said, “I thought there would be seven thousand!”* I experienced the holy the other night when I broke bread with others at the Wednesday evening meal. My mother experienced the holy listening to a wren sing. Patty told me the sunset the other night was a holy creation moment. Rohr writes, “It is we alone who desecrate God’s one incarnate world by our inability to see truthfully and to show reverence.” Is it possible to find the holy in a finance meeting? Even when dealing with the reality, we are also called to hold up the dream and to imagine God’s kingdom on earth. That’s what prophets do. Pastor Denny *Richard Rohr, A Sacramental Universe 4
A Note from Pastor Jen THANK YOU! The Hibben family would like to thank you all for your love, support, meals and understanding as we welcomed Miles! I am always overwhelmed by the unconditional love shown to someone who’s literally done nothing but be born! These are the moments that remind me why we work through all the difficult parts of being commu- nity, because this is where we experience and share God’s unconditional love in the midst of our daily lives. Thanks for being our village in this new, exciting, exhausting time! (On a practical note, if you’re missing dishes from a delicious meal you brought us, I have them outside my office and you’re welcome to grab them anytime!) We love you! 5
Wesley Center Updates It’s an exciting time to be part of the Wesley Center! As many of you know better than us, campus ministry can change from year to year, each year we learn as much as we can and pray for whatever new things will come our way the next semester. Because of that we are so encouraged as we look back at the 2018/2019 school year and look forward to 2019/2020. Below you’ll see a graphic with information about the different areas of ministry and care that students engaged in, and the majority of these students were new to the Wesley Center! Now many of these students don’t identify as United Methodists, a few don’t even identify as Christians, and we know that many of you may not see them because they don’t attend Collegiate on Sunday mornings. Don’t worry! There’s still lots of ways you can support them and the Wesley Center! The 2019/2020 school year is already off to an amazing start. We believe that small groups are the best place for students to experience a sense of belonging and God’s unconditional love, where they grow the most in their faith and where they are truly transformed to change the world. Because of that we have made small groups the core of our programming. This can be difficult because a small group is a weekly commitment in the already busy lives of our students, it requires that they participate in study, conversation, prayer and service. If we have a student engaged in a small group, they’re actively engaged at Wesley. This semester we have 4 small groups and 45 students signed up for them (25 are NEW to the Wesley Center)! We are also continuing to offer a monthly option for students so our whole community can gather together, invite new people to join us with low commitment and give students a chance to check us out. This semester we’re talking about Jesus. We’re taking a deeper look at who Jesus was and highlighting some of the attributes that we don’t always talk about in church. In September we talked about Jesus as a rebel, in October we will talk about Jesus not being white and in November we’ll talk about Jesus as a feminist. Students are intrigued and have enjoyed discussing these views of Jesus and how it impacts who we are and how we live in the world. In October we also offer a retreat for students who want to get more involved with Wesley. Last year this was a pivotal time for many students as they gained a sense of community and belongingness while more deeply exploring their spirituality. Look for photos and recap next month! As we have grown in number we have also found that the need for students to connect with Wesley staff is vital. You’ll see that last year Jen had over 35 one-on-one meetings with students who needed support, counseling or help with vocational discernment. This semester, with 3 weeks of school, we have met with 12 students and have others scheduled already. Right now there are a few ways you can support this ministry as we move forward: one practical way is to provide lunch on Sunday to students, 6
contact Lauren (lauren@ cwames.org) to sign up and get more info; another way to is give financially, supporting the Wesley Center with your financial gifts assures that there will continue to be a progressive, inclusive campus ministry at ISU regardless of funding from the conference; and finally, your prayers can’t be underestimated. We have had so many moments this semester where we have seen how God has worked in a student’s life to bring them to Wesley, or where returning students have gushed about how important the Wesley Center was to them last year. Part of that is programming, part of it is hard work, but the biggest part is relationships: relationships with God, relationships with each other, and relationships in prayer as you all pray for students you may never meet and for those of us who help them experience God’s unconditional love, grow in faith and serve the world. So thank you, keep it up! If you have questions about the Wesley Center, we invite you to reach out to us, we LOVE to talk about our amazing students and the difference that the Wesley Center is making at ISU and beyond. Wesley Center Lunch on the Landing Hosts Big thanks to Ken and Bev Kruempel, Renate Dellman and Bruce and Barbara Munson for being our September Lunch on the Landing hosts! This outreach is very much appreciated by our college students and is only possible through volunteers like these. We have a wonderful opportunity on Sundays during the school year to provide a meal to college students that join us in worship at Collegiate Wesley. We are looking for hosts for the upcoming school year to provide lunch after the 11:00 a.m. worship service in the Student Lounge. Hosts provide a main course and a side dish or two for approximately 15- 20 students. We have some students that are vegetarian which makes a vegetarian main dish extremely helpful. Desserts are great, but optional. A Wesley student will be assigned to help set out the food for serving; you simply prepare the meal in advance. You may prepare the meal at home, at Collegiate Wesley, or a combination of the two. Consider signing up with a friend, a neighbor, or Sunday School Class. Please let me know if you have any questions. Sign up here Lunch on the Landing or contact Lauren Loonsfoot lauren@cwames.org. Children, Youth and Family Information Lauren Loonsfoot: Director of Children, Youth & Family Ministries & Associate Campus Minister Families Group October Event: Pumpkin Painting Join the Families Group on Saturday, October 19, 9:30 to 11 a.m. in Wesley Hall to paint pumpkins. Small gourds and pumpkins and paint supplies will be provided (if you have a big pumpkin you’d like to paint, feel free to bring it!). This is a fun event for all! What Are Our Children Doing in Sunday School?! A special thanks to all of our children and youth Sunday School teachers, shepherds and other volunteers who helped kick off our Sunday School year on Rally Sunday at the beginning of September. Our children and youth are now deep into growing in their faith. Here is an update on how: 8
• Our two and three year olds have learned about the creation story in Genesis and are seeing and coloring images of the earth, sea and sky. • Three and four year olds will learn about God’s presence with them, as with Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt, through the parting and safe passage of the Red Sea and through the wilderness. On the last Sunday of the month, they will hear about the Ten Commandments (or rules) that God provided to help the Israelite d community live together. e • Kindergarteners through fifth graders will finish their final rotation of the Four Friends, a five-week lesson to help our children learn that friends take care of one another and learn the value of perseverance and creativity. We have had some great conversations about friends, taking care of one another, problem solving and hard work, and as always, we are blown away by how insightful these kids are. On the third Sunday of the month, students will begin a four-week study titled Jesus and the Children, during which they will discover that children are important in God's kingdom and learn that they are blessed by Jesus. This age group will rotate through the story Sunday, hearing the same story taught via cooking, science, drama, art, games and spiritual practices. Each time, the same story is presented in a new way, so all students can experience the story in a different way. • Middle School students have been learning about Moses and reading from Exodus. They will next dive into Genesis and talk about creation and the amazing wonder that God is. • High School students have been discussing humility in their class. If you're looking for a way to help and support our Children and Youth ministries, please contact Lauren Loonsfoot lauren@cwames.org. We're always looking for more rotation teachers, substitutes and youth group project leaders. Lets talk! Children Sunday School Registration We are asking everyone, even our long-time Children’s Sunday School attendees, to please register your children for Sunday School, so that we are aware of allergies, birthdays, parent cell phone and emergency contact numbers, etc., at https://forms.gle/KCYME7iH2A4Rog7Y7. Thank you to those who have already registered! Children’s Sabbath Sunday - October 20 We’ll celebrate the many ways that children make our church sparkle. Children will assist with ushering, greeting, reading scripture, special music and more! Kids Quest In October, Kids Quest children will discuss forgiving others, ways that they can contribute to the church, following God’s instruction, staying faithful and what it may have been like for Moses and the Israelites in the desert. All children three years old through first grade are welcome to join us for Kids Quest every Wednesday night, 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. in Room 202. Third Grade Bibles At ages 8-9, children are developing the independence and reading/ study skills that they need in order to begin to explore God's Word on their very own. We present children with a new Bible at this age in the hopes that they will not only learn how to read Scripture, but they will be able to use their knowledge of the Bible in order to deepen their faith and relationship with God. Presenting Bibles to 3rd Graders is a long standing tradition in the United Methodist Church. When we present them with this Bible in worship, it is a continuation of their lifelong faith journey. This year, third graders will be presented their bibles on Children’s Sabbath Sunday on October 20 and for the following seven weeks, will participate in a Sunday School class separate from the other grades, during which time the children will learn how to dive deeper into God’s Word. Confirmation On September 22 we started our 2019-2020 confirmation class for the year! Please keep the students, facilitators, mentors and parents in your prayers as they journey through this year of learning, serving and growing in their faith. High School Youth Night Oct. 25 All 9th-12th graders are invited to join us for a night of service and fun. We’ll start with helping at Food at First from 5:30-7:00. Then from 7:00- 8:30 we’ll trick or treat for non perishables for the Food at First Pantry. We’ll end the night with games and a movie at church. This evening will end at midnight. To RSVP please let Lauren Loonsfoot lauren@cwames.org know you’ll be attending. 12

Pridefest THANK YOU! For the 3rd year in a row, Col- legiate/Wesley sponsored and showed up in a big way at Ames Pridefest. The beautiful weather in the morning meant an extra large crowd and many opportunities to share God’s extravagant and inclu- sive love with everyone. A steady stream of volunteers handed out several hundred mugs filled with candy and information about our church. Hundreds of tattoos were placed and the DIY button station at the Wesley booth kept people engaged and entertained. Stories were shared, hugs were given, and many questions about Collegiate/Wes- ley were answered. A very special thank you to Maeann and Mariah Un- ser, Steve and Floramay Miller, Ashley and Kaci Mahannah, Kris Meinhard, Steven, and Megan, Clara and Avis Schroder for volunteering at the event! Thoughts from Bob I’m not proclaiming a divine truth. I witness to what is becoming so real to me. What is the genius of our Wesley tradition? We are organized from top to bottom. Some times it seems the top is getting too heavy for the bottom to support. We come up with programs to advance the cause, program after program. But all that really is secondary, a result of our genius. Our genius, as with John Wesley, is that first we have a genuine experience of Christ. Wesley’s was at the prayer meeting on Aldersgate Street during the reading of Luther’s Commentary on Paul in Romans. Prayer and Scripture were involved, but they led him to encounter Jesus, “His heart strangely warmed, his sins forgiven.” He knew Jesus, not just a set of theological statements. It didn’t stop there. He would realize that was only the beginning. Now he must continue and grow toward perfection in loving God and loving one another. ‘Toward’ is the important word. He needed over and over being reconciled to his loving Lord, and Christ was doing that. That was his way of expressing Paul’s truth in 2 Corinthians 5.19- “God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself and not counting their offenses against them.” It was a life-long encounter that produced growth in that double love. Remember when John Wesley sent Thomas Coke to America to join Francis Asbury, his advice was, “Offer them Christ.” If we neglect our encounter with Christ, strengthened continually with prayer- direct contact- and Scripture- receiving witness to us, our energy for all our organization or programs will dwindle down. The further away we drift from our Lord, the more we will come to rely on rules and laws to shape our lives meaningfully. That could also lead to our sitting in judgment on others who violate our sacred rules and laws. That throws out “Love one another just as Christ truly has been and yet is loving us”- Jesus’ New Commandment. May our loving Lord help us to find a better life, living in our Tradition. Bob 15
