Duke News March 2021 Volume XXXV Number 7 Jason Heitz Tyler Herman Principal Assistant Principal/Activities Director FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE — ACT Test Day (and other activities) March 23 As with past school years (except last year!) all juniors will be taking the State ACT test. Parents do not need to sign up their junior child and there is no fee for this test. All juniors in the state of Nebraska will be taking the ACT Test. Testing day is Tuesday, March 23. On that same day the sophomores will be taking the Pre-ACT test, and the Freshmen will be taking a tour of York College campus. At this point, it is likely that seniors (Class of 2021) will have no school that day. Students in grades 9-11 will be dismissed when their activity (testing for 10th and 11th graders, YC campus tour for 9th graders) is completed. Lunch will not be served that day at YHS. Career Day, March 24 (virtual) Last year, the pandemic hit not long before the Career Day was to take place. This year’s Career Day is scheduled for March 24, but will take place virtually. Students who are currently in our JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) class with Mr. Fike, will be participating in Career Day, via several zoom meetings. YCDC organizes this event, and several students from all over York County will be participating as well. PROM is set for April 10 YHS Prom is scheduled for Saturday, April 10. As much as possible, we plan on having a "normal" prom. Out -of-town dates are welcome. A few modifications may be necessary, such as fewer people at each table (more spread out) for the meal. Masks will be required. There is a possibility of cancellation on short-notice, if the local health department or DHM's necessitate that. However, we are forging ahead with plans for Prom to be on April 10, 2021. Other upcoming events YHS Honors Night is scheduled for Monday, April 19, 7:00 p.m. As with several other upcoming activities, we plan on holding this event as “normal” as possible. Masks will be required for students and spectators. If DHM’s necessitate, we may have to limit the number of spectators in the theater that evening. We will do our best to keep all informed of regulations, but we are planning Honors Night for April 19. GRADUATION is less than 3 m onths aw ay! Graduation is set for Sunday, M ay 16, at 2:00 p.m . at the City Auditorium. It is likely that masks will be required, and it is also a possibility that the number of spectators could be limited. As usual, we will keep in communication with more details, but please put graduation on your calendars for May 16, 2021. FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL/ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR’S OFFICE -- The month of March marks the beginning of the spring activity season. The spring is a busy time of year for activities and end of the year events. Here are a few reminders: 1. Do not rely totally on the printed calendars - Things happen throughout the year that cause us to change dates and times of events. More often than not in the spring, it’s the weather causing a cancellation or postponement. The best resource is the online rschool calendar which is located on the school website. 2. Follow us on social media - Schedule changes and announcements are always posted to social media. Follow on Twitter (@YorkDukesAD) and Facebook (York Public Schools). 3. Plan ahead with activity conflicts- Students that participate in multiple activities may find that they have conflicts between events on the same day. As much as we try to catch those early, we rely on students and parents to communicate and plan accordingly. We do not have a policy regarding which events take priority. Those are handled on a case by case basis. NOTES FROM THE NURSE Sleep awareness week is March 14-20. Maintaining your sleep health is an act of self-care. Some tips for improving sleep habits include: Keep a schedule-Staying up late and sleeping in on the weekends may sound like a great idea, however, changing your sleep habits a few days a week can have you struggling through the rest of them. Limit caffeine intake-Studies have shown that drinking caffeinated beverages contributes to insomnia. Try going for a quick walk outside or resting your eyes for a moment to get rejuvenated. Regular exercise during the day can help produce the hormone melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone found naturally in your body and it promotes good sleep. Have a nighttime routine-Try to leave at least 2 hours between your last meal/snack of the day and going to bed, turn off the tv, put away the phone, set the bedroom temperature between 60 and 67 degrees and spend approx. 20 minutes reading before turning off the lights. If you or your student struggle with sleep habits do not hesitate to speak with your healthcare professional. Sleep deprivation can have a negative impact on one’s mental and physical health. Vision, hearing and dental screenings continue for 7th and 10th grade students. If a student does not meet the screening guidelines set forth by the state, a letter recommending further evaluation will be sent to the parent/guardian. If you have concerns regarding your child’s hearing, vision or dental health, please follow up with a physician/eye doctor/dentist even if you do not receive a letter of referral.
