WELCOME TO ST. MARTIN OF TOURS CATHOLIC CHURCH - Saint Martin of Tours ...
Happy Easter! May the Risen
Lord be a living experience to
                           you, pervading every aspect
                           of your life, blessing you,
                           strengthening you, inspiring
                           you, guiding you, and
                           supporting you always.
St. Paul said, “If Christ has
                            not been raised, then our
preaching is in vain; and your
Faith is in vain” (I Cor 15: 14).
                            The Resurrection of Jesus is
both the foundation of our faith and the foundation of our
hope. “Hope” as a virtue has a different meaning than
our normal use of the word, which depends on reality
projecting a result into the future. The virtue of Hope
relies solely on the person of God, on who God is, and
what God can do. Without fighting for his life, Jesus
surrendered his will to go through the Passion because
he placed his entire hope in God alone. The Resurrection Easter Prayer
is the extraordinary, unthinkable result of his Hope.
Lord, the resurrection of Your Son
Christ’s Resurrection is the crux of our faith and the
paramount theme of the Apostles’ preaching. has given us new life and renewed hope.

Happy Easter!
         Alleluia! He is Risen!
Saying those words is like drinking a tall glass of
cold water after being out in the desert all day.
Lent is over and it is now time to celebrate the great
joy of Easter!
At the Easter Vigil, the Exsultet is sung as Mass
begins in darkness, illumined only by candles
throughout the church. The Exsultet is a beautiful
hymn of rejoicing in Christ’s triumph over sin and
death. One part states: O truly necessary sin of
Adam, destroyed completely by the Death of
Christ! O happy fault that earned for us so great,
so glorious a Redeemer!
This line stands out because it calls the sin of Adam
“necessary” and refers to it as “O happy fault.” At
first, this may seem strange. Why is it that we refer
to the sin of Adam, Original Sin, as “necessary” and
“happy.” The answer is Easter. It’s because God, in
His perfect wisdom and love, took sin and the
consequence of sin (death) and used them as the
means of the salvation of the world. That’s what
Easter is all about!
This may be hard to comprehend so it’s worth thinking about more deeply. Without Adam’s sin, there would
be no Jesus. God would not have had to become one of us. So even though the original sin of Adam, as well
as all future sin, is evil and wrong, God in His perfect power and love chose to use it as the very means of the
salvation of the world. How? By allowing the sins of the world to persecute Him and crucify Him, and then,
by turning that suffering and death into the very means of salvation. Jesus destroyed sin by destroying the
consequences of sin which is death. Death loses in the Resurrection! Jesus’ Resurrection takes away the
effects of all sin for those who cling to Him.
Easter is a time when we must do just that. We must “cling” to our resurrected Lord! We must cling to Jesus
who is alive and well. We must cling to His Resurrection and strive to share in it. How do we cling to our
Resurrected Lord? There are many ways. Here is one.
Take joy in everything. Start with whatever it is that burdens you the most. Whatever it is that makes you
angry, sad or depressed. Whatever that is, it can potentially become one of your greatest sources of grace and
joy. Seriously, it can. If the brutal Crucifixion of Jesus, the Son of God, can turn out to be the greatest event
in all of human history, then your personal suffering, your burden, or even your sin can very much become a
source of great joy as long as you let God transform it into part of His Resurrection!
This is the meaning of Easter! Easter means that nothing can keep us from the joy that God wants to give
us. Nothing can steal that joy away. Sure, at times we will struggle just as Jesus did in the Agony of the
Garden and the Via Dolorosa (the Way of the Cross), but those sufferings will not win. The Resurrection
won with Christ and it will win with us when we cling to Him. Jesus persevered and, in the end, rose
victorious. This is Easter!
Know that God wants you to experience the joy of Easter in your life. Let Him fill you with hope and with the
joy that only the Resurrection can bring. God wants Easter to begin now in our lives! Happy Easter!

Lord, help me to cling to You in Your Resurrection. Help me to let you transform every cross and burden in
my life into joy. Lord, may Your joy fill my life and be my strength in all things. Jesus, I trust in You.

As we celebrate Palm Sunday and enter Holy Week, culminating in the glory of our Lord through his Resurrection, let’s focus
briefly on some signs of hope in the world around us.
The emergence of more numerous and recognizable voices for the dignity of life and respect for those faith-based values:
movies like Voiceless and I Can Only Imagine, celebrities like former Bachelor star Sean Lowe, Kathie Lee Gifford and
Joy Behar, and increasing numbers of politicians creating a dialogue more open to life at all stages.
A growing movement among young adults to support life, as evidenced by the group Students for Life and its increasing
voice in the Pro-Life conversation. http://www.lifenews.com/2018/03/14/watch-awesome-video-has-young-students-
         explain-why-theyre-pro-life/
The words of Stephen Hawking, renowned physicist (RIP) and supporter of euthanasia, who said, “However bad life may
seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at. While there’s life, there is hope.”
Success in the courtroom, as evidenced by the victory for religious freedom last week, when a federal judge allowed the
Trump administration’s religious exemptions to the Obamacare/ACA abortion mandate to stand.
An increasing number of States which are prohibiting abortions based on a diagnosis of Down Syndrome, currently law in
Indiana, Louisiana, Ohio and North Dakota. Pennsylvania’s legislature is currently working on enacting one, and also
currently prohibits sex-selection abortions. (And I, in my naiveté, thought that only happened in China.)
The overwhelming response on March 12 of 100,000 Irish citizens who took to the streets of Dublin in support of their Eighth
Amendment protecting the unborn in response to an upcoming referendum over the possible repeal of the Eighth
         Amendment. https://aleteia.org/2018/03/12/tens-of-thousands-of-irish-march-to-save-pro-life-amendment/
The hand of God is present in all things, creating good from bad, inviting all to a conversion of the heart. Let us follow His Gospel
with strength and fortitude as we extend our hand toward others.

New Catholic Courses, an 8 week series with Fr. Ben from April 12 thru June 7 . This course will
be done in two parts, first covering the Book of Daniel for 4 weeks, followed by 4 weeks on the Book of
Revelation. Please join us for this new class. To register call the parish office at 310.476.7403 or email to

Part 1: The Book of Daniel invites the reader to explore a unique chapter in salvation history. Today’s
Christians can feel intimidated by society’s increasing disdain for religion, something which Daniel
understood all too well. God’s faithfulness to Daniel during his persecutions and sufferings is the same
faithfulness he offers us today. Daniel is thus a very timely book for today’s Christians, reminding us of
the unchanging nature of God’s love and fidelity, even in the midst of darkness. Part 2: Fr. Alfred McBride, O. Praem.
sets the record straight with an authentic Catholic interpretation of the Book of Revelation. He gives you three keys to
understanding the Book of Revelation and offers sustaining hope for Christians who have experienced or will experience
the trials and persecutions that have always accompanied the Church. In addition to discussing the end of the world, Fr.
McBride presents authentic Catholic teaching on topics including the Rapture, the "mark of the beast," the Antichrist, the
thousand years of peace, and the Unveiling the Apocalypse.

Easter 2018

Dear SMT Friends,
Greetings from Saint Martin of Tours School and blessings for Holy Week and the Easter Season.
At this most joyous time of the Church year, we are reminded of the immense depth of God’s love
for each of us and the gratitude we have for our many blessings. As we move toward the culmination of
the school year in a few short months, there are so many good things for us to celebrate. Our students
have recently received their acceptances to the region’s best Catholic and private schools (Loyola,
Marymount, Harvard-Westlake, Marlborough, Archer, Crespi, Louisville, and both Notre Dame High
School and Academy, just to name a few). It has been another excellent year for placement of our SMT
students. Now they have the satisfying but difficult task of choosing among many great options. Our
academic decathletes and our sports teams have also just finished very successful competitions, earning
5th place overall in the academic competition and undefeated in the regular season of 5/6 boys
basketball. Shortly after Easter vacation, we will be treated to a wonderful production of “The Music
Man” through our Encore Arts program. Later in April, the Class of 2018 will be traveling to
Washington, D.C. for a travel/study experience in our nation’s capital. Soon after that, it will be
time for Grandparents’ Day and First Holy Communion, followed by Sports Day, and then graduation.
As we enter this good but busy time of year in the life of our school community, we take time to cherish
these wonderful school traditions. On behalf of the SMT school community, I wish you a time of peace
and joy.

Easter blessings,
Dr. Colvert

THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD
The path of salvation has been opened to everyone.
Jesus went all the way down, journeying into pain, despair,
alienation, even godforsakenness. He went as far you can go
away from the Father. Why? In order to reach all those who
had wandered from God. In light of the Resurrection,
the first Christians came to know that,
even as we run as fast as we can away from the Father,
we are running into the arms of the Son.
Let us not domesticate these still-running lessons of the
Resurrection. Rather, let us allow them
to unnerve us, change us, and set us on fire.
