Dear St. Raphael Parishioners,
Upcoming Schedule Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, the richest liturgical
week of the Church year. The reading of the Passion today serves as an
introduc on to these special days, invi ng us into the mysteries of salva on.
You may remember that last year’s Holy Week was held virtually or with
minimal numbers, as Covid lockdowns were in effect.
We plan to use up the Missale es we have for the passion reading on Palm
Sunday and Good Friday. These can be taken home or disposed of a erwards
but will not be saved in church for re-use. This will allow us to reduce the amount of printed
worship guides, as the passion narra ves are long and our photocopier is showing its age.
We will be blessing food in church at 1:00 PM on Holy Saturday. Social distancing rules must
be followed, and a sign-in may be required. Also take note of the confession mes on Monday and
Good Friday.
God’s Mercy Last week I started the topic of Mercy in the bible. One overarching point
emerges from the Old Testament: the human race is not able to consistently obey God’s
commandments! We are not able to save ourselves by following the law given to us. This is the
universal situa on of mankind, whatever their ethnic group or na onality. This is partly what the
Church means by the doctrine of original sin. The en re Old Testament can be thought of as posing
one big ques on: If human beings cannot achieve righteousness by obeying the law, how can we be
saved at all? What hope do we have?
We see how the New Testament answers this ques on in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus
taught about God’s mercy using words, parables and even miracles. For example, Jesus said that if
we fail to forgive others, we cut ourselves off from God’s mercy. A large part of the four gospels is
made up of His teachings about mercy. And yet, the words Jesus spoke are not the complete
answer. The true message of God’s mercy can only be found in Jesus Himself: it’s not a concept but
a person.
This is the difference between the Church and some academic school of philosophy: The
Church does not simply teach a set of facts or lessons to be learned. Rather we preach a person;
the man Jesus Christ who suffered and died for our salva on. In order to understand God’s mercy
to us, we must come to experience Jesus Christ. This is the goal of the Sacraments, and the focus of
Holy Week. I hope and pray that this Holy Week will be a me of grace for you all!
