The Collect of the Day Almighty and gracious Father, we give you thanks for the fruits of the earth in their season and for the la- bors of those who harvest them. Make us faithful stewards of your great bounty, for the provision of our necessities and the relief of all who are in need, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Please be seated. The First Lesson: Deuteronomy 26:1-11 “When you come into the land which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, and have taken pos- session of it, and live in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from your land that the LORD your God gives you, and you shall put it in a basket, and you shall go to the place which the LORD your God will choose, to make his name to dwell there. And you shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, `I declare this day to the LORD your God that I have come into the land which the LORD swore to our fathers to give us.' Then the priest shall take the basket from your hand, and set it down before the altar of the LORD your God. And you shall make response before the LORD your God, `A wandering Aramean was my father; and he went down into Egypt and sojourned there, few in number; and there he became a nation, great, mighty and populous. And the Egyptians treated us harshly, and afflicted us, and laid upon us hard bondage. Then we cried to the LORD the God of our fathers, and the LORD heard our voice, and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror, with signs and wonders; and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. And behold, now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground, which thou, O LORD, hast given me.' And you shall set it down be- fore the LORD your God, and worship before the LORD your God; and you shall rejoice in all the good which the LORD your God has given to you and to your house, you, and the Levite, and the sojourner who is among you. Psalm 24 Domini est terra George Black REFRAIN (sung first by Cantor, then by all) The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world and all who dwell therein. For it is he who founded it upon the seas and made if firm upon the rivers of the deep. REFRAIN “Who can ascend the hill of the Lord? and who can stand in his holy place?” “Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, who have not pledged themselves to falsehood, nor sworn by what is a fraud. REFRAIN “They shall receive a blessing from the Lord and a just reward from the God of their salvation.” Such is the generation of those who seek him, of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. REFRAIN The Second Lesson: Philippians 4:4-9 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let all men know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your re- quests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything wor- thy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you. Page 4 - Thanksgiving Day

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. When the crowd found Jesus on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.” Then they said to him, “What must we do to perform the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” So they said to him, “What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, `He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'“ Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.. The Sermon Please stand. A Word from the Rector Thanksgiving Once upon a time, there was a master who gave a special dinner once a month and always invited his friends. It so happened that, on one occasion, a few of his closest friends were sick and unable to attend the feast. The master wanted to save part of the celebration for his friends. So he took a bottle of his best wine from the table and put it away in a special box. That way he would have it when his friends arrived. The master then went to his servant and told him, “Please make sure you respect what is in this box because what is in there has a special purpose for our guest.” The servant was confused but respected the wishes of his master by bowing to the box every time he passed it. Not long after, the master died, but the meals continued. The servant would tell all the guests of the master’s wishes: that they, like he, were to respect the special box. So the meals began to grow more and more serious. Instead of celebrating being friends, they began to eat in silence and to gaze in respect at the box. As this story suggests, it’s very easy for celebrations and for rituals and ceremonies to lose their initial meaning and purpose. In time, as we fail to teach the “whole” story, certain essential parts of the story are lost – sometimes forever. Thanksgiving can and often does suffer from such a loss. Our present age has taught us to always want more, and allows little time in our busy day to look back and simply be thankful. Ironically, it was our forebears, who lived in relative poverty, who have taught us about the merits of thanksgiving. They, who had so little, knew that the little they did have came from their Creator God. We, who have so much, easily lose sight of our need for such a Creator God. After all – most of us know where our next meal is coming from. No need means no need for God! Yet Thanksgiving as a feast reminds us that whether rich or poor, black or white, male or female, all we have is to be received as gift and not earned as reward. As a former paperboy, I well remember those families who gave me the best tips come collection day. However, the more I received such generous gratuities, the more I expected them next time ’round! Why wasn’t I simply thankful for what I had received? Perhaps because it was easier to want more than to ponder a simple act of thankfulness. Does that experience sound familiar? As we make and celebrate Thanksgiving (Eucharist) each week in the coming months, may we always be thankful for our Creating and Sustaining God who keeps us, feeds us, guides and directs us long after his seasonal gifts of turkey and pumpkin pie have completed their temporary effects on us. A blessed and long-lasting Thanksgiving to you all. Michael + Thanksgiving Day - Page 9
