8 Is it Mackinac or Mackinaw? The name Mackinac or Mackinaw is always pronounced as “aw”. The area was originally called Michinnimakinong by the Ojibwa Indians. The word is translated as follows: MISH - GREAT INNI - CONNECTING SOUND MAKI - FAULT NONG - LAND OR PLACE The Island has a large crevice or crack and the term was used by the early Indians as an identifying description to fellow travelers. The world MICHINNIMAKINONG was later shortened to Mackinac by the French. The British wrote it as it was pronounced, thus MACKINAW CITY.

30 Headlands Nature Trails You can read the history of the Great Lakes basin at Alexander Henry Park, but in Headlands you can see this history and its effect. Stand on the shore bluff of the Nipissing Lakes once the shore some 5000 years ago. Hike down to the shoreline today. See the climatic change when some plants are in full bloom at the top of the bluff, still in tight bud next to the cold shore, while the same species is two weeks or more past blooming still farther inland. The mature beech- maple-ash woods on the upland presents one of the finest displays of spring wildflowers anywhere around. The southern part of the tract is mostly lowland, with the wetland forest including a little open sedge fen. The shoreline is mostly gravel and boulders with some bedrock, ornamented with the fossils of past inhabitants. The tract is big enough, wild enough, and sufficiently undisturbed to provide homes for bald eagles, osprey, white tail deer, wild turkeys, coyotes, porcupine, and occasionally a black bear. In a warm, moist season, autumn produces an extraordinary display of varied colorful mushrooms.

38 Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse With its impressive buff-colored brick walls, large tower topped with battlements, and elegant fourth order Fresnel lens, this light- house-built in 1892 is a source for inspiration. Climb the tower and breathe in the spectacular view as generations of lighthouse keepers did before you. Step inside the lighthouse, and hear the Victrola play pre-World War I tunes in a period-styled sitting room. A shipwreck video lets you understand the navigational hazards that sparked the development of lighthouse technology. McGulpin Point & Rock This navigational beacon was built in 1869 and guided mariners of the Straits until it was replaced by the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse in 1892. It was a private residence until Emmet County purchased it in 2009 and now it is open to the public for touring at no charge.

48 What is a Pastie? A pastie is a meat pie that originated as a meal for the miners of Cornwall, England in the 1800’s. Wives would bake meat and vegetables in a crust and wrap it in many layers of linens or newspaper for their husbands’ lunch. The Pastie provided a hot and nutritious meal that had good holding capacity and could be eaten anywhere. Pasties consist of a crust, similar to that of a pot pie, filled with diced potatoes, rutabagas, carrots, onions & meat seasoned to perfection. Most popularly served with gravy, however, specialty shops offer a variety of options.
