ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH 323 WEST ILLINOIS STREET CHICAGO, IL 60654 www.assumption-chgo.org 312-644-0036 Serving the People of Chicago and River North Since 1881
November 14, 2021 OUR OWN PARISH SAINT Very few Catholic Churches can claim to have their own parish saint, but Assumption can. St. Frances Xavier Cabrini worked among the Italian immigrants in this neighborhood, worshipped in our church, founded our parish school in 1899, and became the first United States citizen to be canonized a saint in 1946. The story of every saint begins differently but always ends up in the same place—a fervent love for God and love for neighbor. Frances Cabrini was born in a small town near Milan, Italy in 1850. She was born two months premature and was in poor health for most of her life. Anxious to become a nun and a missionary to China, she ap- plied to and was rejected by several religious congregations because of her fragile health. However, the local bishop recognized her zeal for ministry and her enthusiasm for Christ and encouraged her to begin her own religious congregation, which became the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. As the Foundress and Superior, she was commonly known as Mother Cabrini. In 1889 she petitioned Pope Leo XIII to begin missionary work in the Far East; but the Pope convinced her that the real need for her sisters was in the Americas, not in China. Italian immi- grants were being poorly served by the Church and were facing discrimination in employment and housing. And, so, her primary mission for the rest of her life was in the United States: New York, Chicago, and Denver. In addi- tion to her frail health, she almost drowned as a child and had a great fear of water; yet in pursuit of her mission, she crossed the ocean 27 times. Such will and determination was very typical of her personality. She was an exacting boss and a shrewd business woman, who rarely took “no” for an answer. During her 67 years of life, she founded 67 different institutions (schools, hospitals, and orphanages) to serve the poor and marginalized, including Colum- bus Hospital in Lincoln Park. She died in Chicago on December 22, 1917, supposedly while making Christmas stockings for the children of Assumption School. It was not long after her death that the movement began to have her canonized, nor was it very long before the necessary miracles through her intercession were obtained to declare her Blessed (1938) and then a Saint (1946). In fact, my aunt, who was not given to fantasy or exaggeration, and who had suffered a number of miscarriages, claims to have had a vision of Mother Cabrini saying to her, “You will have this child,” and she did. At the time of her canonization, Fr. Tom Ferrazzi, OSM, Assumption’s pastor, arranged for one of the first statues of Mother Cabrini to be shipped to Assumption. When the statue arrived, he proudly unveiled it in the presence of a large congrega- tion and members of the press. However, the reaction of the congregation was not what he expected. The statue showed Frances Cabrini as a young woman with a pleasant smile on her face. The old timers who remembered her, knew her only as an old and severe woman who rarely smiled. The uproar was so intense that Fr. Tom had to donate the original statue to Columbus Hospital. He later obtained the more serious looking statue that we now have on the east side of the church. This anecdote serves to remind us that none of the saints started out as plaster statues. They were all human beings, whose strong commitment to the reign of God was not always understood or well received. It is worth noting that no tuition was ever charged at Assumption School, which closed in 1945 (but which still stands in the 300 block of West Erie). Mother Cabrini said that if the Servites ever tried to charge tuition, she would immediately pull her Sisters out of the School. Initially Mother Cabrini’s Feast Day was observed on December 22, the day of her death. In 1961 Pope John XXIII moved it to November 13, the anniversary of her beatification and a date where her life and example would not get lost in the rush of Advent and Christmas. More recently she has been proclaimed the Patron Saint of Immi- grants. While Columbus Hospital closed about twenty years ago and was demolished, the Hospital Chapel has been preserved and serves as the National Shrine of St. Frances Cabrini. This year marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of her canonization and is being observed as the Year of Frances Cabrini. The Shrine is planning a number of obser- vances to mark this event, beginning with her Feast Day this weekend. An interesting footnote to her enduring significance is that Colorado Legislature in 2020 officially inaugurated Cabrini Day as a state holiday on the first Monday of October. Fr. Joe

ADVENT CALENDAR RETURNS: It is during the Season of Advent that we see the promise of the Annunciation come to fulfillment in the Nativity. To help you on your journey through Advent, our second annual Advent Calendar will be posted on our website (www.assumption-chgo.org) and on our Facebook Page (facebook.com/AssumptionCatholicCC). This is not your average Advent Calendar filled with choco- lates. This calendar is filled with much more: hope-filled words of Scripture, beautiful artwork, and intriguing ques- tions for contemplation. Be sure to visit the calendar each day beginning November 28, the First Sunday of Advent. MASKING IS BACK: Although we wish it were over, “It ain’t over till it’s over.” With the resurgence of the virus due to the Delta Variant, the City of Chicago as well as the Arch- diocese of Chicago now requires everyone, vaccinated or un- vaccinated, to be masked while in church or at other indoor church gatherings. The Archdiocesan COVID-19 Task Force wrote in part: “We will continue to monitor the situation and will reevaluate our policy if conditions and public health guidance warrants it. It is our hope and our prayer that meas- ures taken now and scrupulously applied will enable us to adopt a mask-optional policy for vaccinated persons in the future. Certainly we are disappointed and saddened that in- fection and serious illness rates have again surged. We must do our part to bring the pandemic under control and the suf- fering to an end. This is both our civic and Christian duty. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do to keep each other safe and well.” HYMNS FOR MASS #587, #335, #577 (except 5:00 p.m. Sunday) WEDDINGS TIMOTHY LYDON & MARGARET PIRCON MATTHEW BEHAN & ALEXANDRA NIEBRUGGE MARK OLSON & TRACY KAPRAUN JONATHAN SUES & LINDSEY MITKUS PRAY FOR THEM Sick: Annette Russo, Bill Hjorth, Nancy Alfano, Rosemary Reeves, Kevin Atwood, Terrie Stevens, Maripat Nellis, Craig Mitchell, Terry Hufnagel, and Davy Hart MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 13, 2021 Sat. 13th 5:00 Joseph Alfano, M.D. (RIP) Sun. 14th 7:30 Assumption Parishioners 9:00 Michael & Rose Marie Sopko (RIP) Helen Morris (RIP) Deceased of Sopko, Morris, Pfiester & Jenkins Families 10:30 Ed Galvin (RIP) 12:15 Gemma Sullivan (RIP) Mon. 15th 7:00 Julia Dubuque (b’day) 12:10 Patrick & Allison Reisch Thurs. 18th 7:00 Anne Dubuque (b’day)
