STATEWIDE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Chair Jason Haruki HO‘OKU‘IKAHI: To Unify As One Vice Chair Ryan Kaipo Nobriga Thursday, July 29 at 8:30 pm Secretary Joy Miura Koerte Treasurer Kent Tsukamoto The Pu‘ukoholā Heiau on Hawai‘i Island is a sacred site in the Hawaiian culture. Its presence is grand, not only because of its size, but also in the Muriel Anderson role it played in the unification of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Jodi Endo Chai James E. Duffy Jr. Matthew Emerson The heiau was constructed between 1790 and 1791 on the Kohala Coast. AJ Halagao It was at a time when Kamehameha the Great was at a crossroads in Wilbert Holck his quest to rule and unify the Hawaiian Islands. And while he would Siana Hunt eventually fulfill that prophecy, it came with great sacrifice. Noelani Kalipi Cheryl Ka‘uhane Lupenui Ian Kitajima The film Ho‘oku‘ikahi: To Unify As One, originally released in 1998, documents Ashley Takitani Leahey the 1991 ceremony that marked the 200th anniversary of the consecration of Kevin Matsunaga the Pu‘ukoholā Heiau. According to filmmaker Meleanna Aluli Meyer, “This Theresia McMurdo was done as a recommitment to the place, to the culture and to the traditions Bettina Mehnert and protocols. To not only enliven our practices, but to give us really, the Jeff Mikulina Rick Nakashima courage that we needed to begin again ... because this is a constant renewal.” Ku‘uhaku Park Aaron Salā It was also a chance to heal wounds of the past, bringing together two L. Candy Suiso clans who were historically torn. “We have been able to create and to Kūha‘o Zane envision and to work toward a message of healing, of reconciling and coming together …” says Meyer. MANAGEMENT President and CEO Kumu hula John Keolamamaka‘āinana Lake learned the appropriate rituals and Ron Mizutani protocols for the 1991 ceremony and was later appointed as kahuna nui, or chief Senior Vice President/CFO priest, of the heiau. To mark the 30th anniversary of the film’s documentation Karen Yamamoto of the ceremony, it will include a recent interview with Meyer and two of Kumu Vice President, Content Lake’s students, Māhealani Wong and Sam ‘Ohukani‘ōhi‘a Gon III, PhD.
