FROM OUR NEW RECTOR One of my closest friends in college, I attended a Christian University for my undergraduate studies, left the Church during our senior year. He had many reasons for severing ties with the Church and his faith, but his primary reason for leaving, or at the least the primary reason he shared with me, was that he found a better “community” in a fitness group than he ever had in the Church. Troubling as it may sound, he was absolutely right. The large, suburban, so-called “mega-church” that he grew up in had emphasized the church as a place for “community” above all else, so that when he found a better community in a Crossfit gym he was smart enough to connect himself with it and leave his church. I share this story to ask you, St. Peter’s, a question that I find myself asking all the time. What is the purpose of the Church? If we answer that question in any way that does not center on Christ, and the encounter with Him through Word and Sacrament that is available exclusively within the Church, our understanding of the Church is misguided. If we tie the primary significance of the Church with anything else, even something good, noble, and godly such as community, social justice, the betterment of our nation, or any other number of noble temptations, the result will be a church that has lost its way. This encounter with Jesus Christ in Word and Sacrament that we find in the Church is ultimately why I felt called to the Priesthood, and it is why I am so eager to join you as your Rector. I promise you all little else in the time that God has granted me to serve as your Rector than the faithful proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ in word and deed, and the right administration of the sacraments. These are the means through which we come to know Christ, and Christ is all we need. I cannot begin to express my gratitude to all of you for your prayers and support in this extended season of transition, and for my family as the four of us (Madeline, Genevieve, and Vivienne) make our way to Loveland and St. Peter’s. In the coming weeks and months, I hope to have the opportunity to get to know each one of you better, to hear your story of how you came to know and love the Lord, and to learn how I can better serve you as your Priest. I continue to thank you for your prayers, support, and all that you do for my family and for St. Peter’s. In Christ, Fr. Matt, Rector THANK YOU FROM FORMER SENIOR WARDEN! A special thank you to all of you have expressed thanks to me for my service as senior warden over what I seem to remember was about eight, nine or even ten years. Your words, cards and generous gifts have given me great pleasure and a feeling of humbleness. In many of those years our parish experienced ups and downs, challenges and excitement; and I did my best with the Lord’s guidance to do His work in our growing community. My service was for the Lord, and it was not for any rewards. In 2018 when I volunteered to serve again the parish was experiencing a very low point in its history, I did so to help preserve our church for the Lord and for Father Jim Paul. With your help, and with many new parishioners joining the church, and soon a new rector, the Lord has put us on a road to a wonderful recovery. For those of you who made a generous contribution towards a gift fund I want you to know that I was not able to accept those gifts. However, I have directed that the funds contributed be placed into the parish’s college scholarship matching fund which was created during the last year. Again, thank you, and blessings to all. Terry
PRIORTIZE THE KINGDOM OF GOD In the book of Acts and the Epistles of the Apostle Paul, one can read about how Paul sent followers of Jesus like Titus and Timothy to serve and provide guidance to churches that were going through challenging seasons. Timothy was sent to the church in Corinth, Philippi, and Ephesus. Titus was sent to help the churches in Corinth, Crete, and Rome. These men were tasked with combating heresy, teaching sound doctrine, helping disciples learn to follow the teachings of Jesus, and how to share the Gospel. I hope and pray that I’ve served St. Peter’s in a similar way through what has been a very challenging season and transition. As my last act as your Rector, I want to share one final bit of pastoral guidance. Prioritize seeking “first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.” above the things of this world. You won't regret it when you stand before your Savior and King. Of course, Satan will try to prevent you from doing this by keeping us distracted or busy. He will often draw our attention towards pursuing the things of this world--like a more comfortable lifestyle--or after something that seems like a good and worthwhile thing but actually prevents us from accomplishing our calling to help advance the kingdom of our glorious Lord. I implore you not to give in to our enemy’s temptations who wants to see humans suffer his fate versus the one God wants for us and others. With that said, I want to thank you for allowing me to use my spiritual gifts and talents to serve as your Interim Rector. We’ve been through a lot together the past year. Thanks to the hard work of your vestry, staff, and clergy, you’re ready to receive The Reverend Matthew Rucker as your new Rector. May our Lord bless you and keep you as you seek first his Kingdom in the days ahead. Grace & Peace, The Rev. Jamie George 14th ANNUAL PARISH PICNIC AUG 29th The 14th Annual Parish Picnic will be held on Sunday, August 29th following the morning church service. SAINT FIACRE FEAST DAY IS AUGUST 30TH Saint Fiacre was an Irish hermit who exiled himself for Christ. Given a piece of land by Saint Faro at Breuil where he lived until his death about 670AD. He was known in both medival England and France, and by the 12th Century a cult of followers had developed. Saint Fiacre is the patron for horticulturists because of his demonstrated skills in gardening during his life on his land. Legend says his life as a hermit was perpetuated by his being a misogynist who disliked marriage and possibly women. Today his relics rest in Meaux, France, it being the center of his isolated life. Where he lived is now called Saint-Fiacre (Seince-et-Marne). Strangely the hackney carriages seen in Paris were called “fiacres”, and this term remains for today’s taxis. His feast day is celebrated on August 30th. SIGN-UP TODAY TO ASSIST WITH FUNDING SAINT PETER’S! St Peter’s has enrolled in the King Soopers Community Rewards Program. MAZE OF ANGLICAN CLERGY TITLES #5 Regional Bishop a bishop in a large diocese who is one of several bishops, each having oversight over a specific geographic area of parishes and clergy within that diocese. This person may be a coadjutor or a suffragan, or even the Diocesan. Technically, regional bishops can function anywhere within the diocese, but they have a closer relationship with and more detailed knowledge of their particular district. Regional Dean a priest who has some pastoral and administrative oversight of a small group of parishes or congregations. This position has less weight than that of an archdeacon, so there can be several regional deans in an archdeacon’s area of responsibility. A regional dean is generally an Incumbent of one of the parishes in his or her “Deanery.” The titles “Rural Dean” and “District Dean” refer to exactly the same function. Of the three adjectives (“Rural,” “District” and “Regional”), “Rural Dean” is probably the oldest and the original version of this title, but it is falling out of use. The title of Regional Dean is not to be confused with Dean of a diocese. Rural Dean see “Regional Dean” Suffragan Bishop a bishop who has been appointed to assist a diocesan bishop (the “Ordinary”). In contrast to the position of Coadjutor, a Suffragan is not automatically the Diocesan’s successor. (see also: “Regional bishop”) Transitional Diaconate a category of clergy who are ordained deacon in preparation for being ordained priest. Clergy in the transitional diaconate tend to spend up to a year serving as deacons, after which ordination to the priesthood takes place following further review and inquiry. Vicar this word has slightly different meanings in various parts of the Anglican world. In England, a vicar is a salaried parish priest. In the U.S.A., a vicar is a priest who is responsible either for a “mission” or for an institutional chapel (a “mission” is a congregation that is either recently founded, or is not capable of being financially self-sustaining; a “chapel” is a place of worship in a hospital, or an airport, or a government building). In many places the word “vicar” can be used for a priest who is acting in behalf of a senior official who is not present (similar to the English word, “vicarious”). Vocational Diaconate a category of clergy who are ordained as deacons and intend to remain as deacons for the rest of their lives, without being further ordained to the priesthood (see “Transitional Diaconate,” above). Such people recognize their vocation to be that of ministry and service, rather than presiding. Printed with permission from an online article entitled “Glossary of Anglican Clergy Titles” by The Rev Canon Tony Harwood-Jones. The complete glossary is available at www.https://www.tonyhj.ca/Priest/glossary_of_titles.html.
WELCOME FR. EASTERLING! The Reverend William Easterling and his wife Catherine - celebrating 46 years of marriage on August 9th - have been with the parish since early in the year. In mid-July Bishop Bill Atwood approved Fr. Easterling’s transfer to the International Diocese from the Diocese of Quincy. As a brokerage banker in Quincy, IL; and as a cradle Episcopalian, he determined a call to enter the ministry in 2005. He attended Nashotah House Seminary graduating in 2007. He stayed on at Nashotah House as the Associate Dean for Administration and Development. After serving two Episcopal churches in Louisiana, he retired in 2019. In April, he transferred from the Episcopal Church to the Anglican Diocese of Quincy. Fr. Bill and Catherine have two daughters, Allison and Brooks, and a grand-daughter Caiya, living in Fort Collins. Son Ramsey and four grandchildren live in Quincy, Illinois. Please give a hearty welcome Fr. Easterling as he joins our St. Peter’s clergy team! ST PETER’S ZETEO MISSIONS LIFELINE Zeteo’s building under construction for the new preschool will create rhythms for the children’s bodies, minds and spirits. Because the children are in danger outside the mission, they must stay on the Zeteo campus. This building will be a place to learn about relationships in community, a rite of passage as they grow, an opportunity to stretch in relationship with a teacher and other children. This will be a trauma-informed classroom where the young ones’ deficits are understood and specific interventions are applied so that behaviors that would be seen as irrational or defiant in a regular classroom are met with compassionate connection and empowering for correction and learning what is relationally successful. Having a separate building to go to school in also allows for “goodbyes” and “hellos again” that create feelings of safety and help to battle previous abandonment experiences. Thank you to St Peter’s parish for your continued support through your prayers and monthly boxes! THANK YOU TO . . . . . . BARBARA FOR SUSTITUTING . . . FR. TOM FOR FILLING IN AS . . . WHAT IS IN THE PARISH LIBRARY? Well, of course, books are in the parish library. However, there are some interesting publications and educational items available to you. How about these: Religious books arranged by author’s last name Church history and saint books Various issues of Bibles, hymnals and prayer books Children’s section of religious books Bible study series and group study books Yearly St Peter’s notebooks of publications A DVD and audio CD section ACNA and International Diocese Canon books Miscellaneous section with no author listed The library is available to parishioners. There is no checkout system. If you borrow a book, please return it. Please do not borrow reference items such as the parish history notebooks or the Interpreter’s Bible books. Donations to the library are always welcome, but please limit your donations to religious items only. You may leave donations with Liz in the church office or place your box of books on the table in the library. The library elf will place them appropriately in the stacks. COLLEGE CONNECTION TO RESTART With the perhaps beginning of a near normal college year starting in August or September – depending on the school – we would like to restart our College Connection Program. This program attempts to keep those from the parish in contact with the parish via an Autumn, Advent, Lent and late Spring mailing of St Peter’s and Christian materials to let them know that their parish has not forgotten them now that they are away. Your help is needed to secure the names and college addresses of those from the parish who will be attending a college or university this fall. Please share this information with Terry Dunn or leave it in the office with Liz. In addition, anyone interested in assisting with this project should please contact Terry Dunn at your earliest convenience. On Sunday, August 22nd, there will be a special welcome luncheon in honor of our new rector and his family. Please sign-up online or in church by August 15th. This is a catered luncheon provided by Dr. & Mrs. Harry Taylor in recognition of their 95th birthdays!
CHRISTIAN CROSS NAME GAME Over the centuries many styles of Christian crosses have been developed.
