Beki gave an informative talk about the rating of motorcycle safety gear.

A young banker decided he wanted to order his first tailor-made suit, so he went to the finest tailor in town
to get measured.
A week later he went in for his first fitting. He put on the suit and he looked fabulous. He felt that in this suit
he could do business.
As he was preening himself in front of the mirror, he reached down to put his hands in the pockets but to
his surprise he noticed that there were no pockets. He mentioned this to the tailor, who then asked him:
“Didn’t you tell me you were a banker?”
The young man answered: “Yes, I did.”
To this the tailor said: “Whoever heard of a banker with his hands in his own pockets?”
SUNDAY RIDE REPORTS
OUTRUN THE RAIN RIDE - 18 October 2020
Today was based on a simple plan, ride to Wongan Hills via Toodyay and Calingari, for lunch.
A phone call to the pub, a few days prior, established it was closed on Sunday.
Plan B
Ride to Dowerin for lunch after confirming the pub was open.
So 10 bikes and one pillion (Fran) set off from Maccas enroute to Northam via Toodyay Rd and Clackline.
The day started well, cool, however began to warm up after an hour or so pleasing most riders who had
opted for summer gear based on the 30 degree forecast.
Half an hour out of Northam the skies darkened and the temperature dropped to 17 degrees causing some
to switch on their heated grips.
As we approached the last small roundabout before the town centre Eric decided to do a 360 degree turn
and head home.
Coffee at the Riversedge cafe overlooking the Avon River was pleasant as was the verbal interaction.
We could hear thunder in the distance as the dark clouds to the Northeast, the direction in which we were
heading, became blacker.
Time to call the pub in Dowerin to confirm lunch numbers. They didn’t answer at 8am when first called,
probably a bit early for a publican.
Having confirmed numbers, the publican advised it was raining with thunder and lightening which could
effect the power meaning no or cold lunches for us.
Thank you Dowerin pub, we didn’t want cold lunches and we didn’t want to get wet particularly as most of
us were wearing summer gear.
We’ll reschedule the ride for another day.
Plan C
After deliberation with the group we decided to head for York and endeavour to outrun the rain which was
heading in a SW direction.
Brian headed home from
York while the rest of us
headed for Beverley with
the dark clouds still
threatening from the NE.
The countryside is already
looking quite brown and the
crops are getting close to
harvest.
From Beverley we headed
the 60km + on Talbot West
Rd back toward Gt
Southern Hwy and The
Lakes.
Lunch in the form of meat
pies and other healthy fare
at the Mundaring Artisan
bakery was enjoyed by all.
It was home from here
straight down the hill,
where now the temperature
had reached the forecast
warm 30 degrees.
Thanks Nigel for TEC duties performed admirably! (although as ride leader I didn’t have a clue what he was
doing!). Thanks all for an enjoyable 330km ride.
We did outrun the rain.

Ken and Chloe’s Sunday Ride Take 2 - November 8th. The rain started early on the morning of November 1. The ride that day was planned to go to either Greenhills Inn or Bedford Arms, Brookton. By ride time the rain was still coming down and although not heavy, did not stop all morning so the ride was cancelled. As the ride the following week on the 8th needed a leader, it was an easy decision to take the ride that Sunday. Initially the same ride that was planned for the week before was the destination but during the week Susan Allen from Warnbro branch posted some information about a café in Dwellingup that has been taken over by a couple who are making it a biker friendly and theme restaurant called Longriders. We need to support such enterprises so it was easy to make Dwellingup the destination. On a lovely fine Sunday morning 11 riders plus Chloe turned up to support the café. Dwellingup is always a nice half day ride and usually means riding via Jarrahdale so it can become a bit of a challenge to think up a new route to take. A ride that had not been done for a while were the roads through the foothills of Jane Brook, Swan View and Darlington that gave a few new roads up to Kalamunda on the way to the Brook 508 Café in Roleystone for morning tea. Kalamunda to Roleystone was via the Bickley Valley, Canning Mills and Karragullen. The Brook 508 Café is a quiet little place in the Roleystone hills off Brookton Highway and is a bit of a favourite of mine for a morning tea stop. Arriving there around 9.45 we took the usual half hour to solve the world’s problems while drinking coffee or tea with some enjoying a toasty or slice of banana cake. After morning tea Brian, Mick, Gerard and Ric decided to head off home while the rest of us headed down Soldiers Rd past Churchman Brook Dam and onto Albany Highway via Bedfordale. Albany Highway let us open the bikes up a bit as we headed to Jarrahdale Road and on to Kingsbury Drive as we cut along the scarp and Serpentine Dam. The traffic on the day was very light for a such beautiful day so we enjoy the roads on the way to North Dandalup for a quick fuel stop and then a Del Park Road cruise up to Dwellingup. The town was not all that busy and the Longriders Café has lots of bike parking front and rear. It’s the old café half way along the main road up from the Blue Wren on the corner. Food is good and they do all types from Burgers to Pizzas that are a good size to share. They are also licenced. The hosts are very nice and being involved in dementia care actually knew Chloe and made us more than welcome. We wish them every success. Another relaxing hour solving more problems before mounting up for the pleasant ride down the hill to the more mundane ride across the coastal plain and freeway traffic battle.
Ride to the Freemasons Hotel – Toodyay - Sunday 22 November 2020
There were a lot of bikes for this ride (more like a Wednesday ride for numbers) anyway with Brian
as the Ride Leader he will probably lose a few before we’re finished. Bruce was TEC so it would
be up to him to collect as many as he could in the event of the Leader going astray.
Highlights of the ride:
• From Chidlow Tavern we did a circuit though Wooroloo visiting the prison (well I thought
about it)
• Fernie Road to Salt Valley Road and on to the Freemasons Hotel in Toodyay
• Lunches were appetizing to say the least
• Nobody went missing. Although Jim did a lot of waiting around on the home run
• Somebody even said they enjoyed the ride??• Nobody wanted to mention the New FJR that turned up (ask the two Jim’s how it came
about)
Courageous Eric seems to be hogging the lime light these days what with his generous
donation on the Poker Run and now he leaves the ride before it even starts only to join it again
on a different bike. You guessed it “the not so trusty Goldwing” had developed a problem.
We hate to say it Eric but there are some really reliable bikes on the market these days.

know)KAREN’S RIDE – SUNDAY 29 NOVEMBER The Gravity Centre, via Mogumber After the usual ride briefing and welcoming 3 new members, 18 riders and 1 pillion set off towards the freeway and Burns Beach Road. As it was a longer ride, I had planned a direct route, without including the oft-travelled Chittering Valley. We encountered 2 police vehicles on Neaves Road so we kept a steady pace until we turned left at Bindoon- Moora Road. A few riders wanted a more spirited pace so overtook me and met us at Mogumber. It was good to see the bumper wheat harvest in evidence in the fields. When we gathered at Mogumber Hall for the planned comfort break, a few people expressed concern about their fuel levels. Phil on his Royal Enfield Interceptor was particularly concerned so Dave “Super- Moore” offered to take Phil to Regans Ford, slightly north of the planned route. I was pleasantly surprised to see wildflowers along Mogumber Rd West (yes, we were travelling eastward!) – a welcome bonus. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the roadworks sign and the start of some gravel. Fortunately, it was only a short distance. Along Brand Highway, we passed the Iluka mine site juxtaposed with a large solar array. Then it was a right turn onto Gingin Brook Road and left onto Military Road to The Gravity Centre. The 40km/h limit along the driveway gave us the opportunity to appreciate the wildflowers. Refreshments ordered we added more tables and chairs to the already reserved set up and the usual banter ensued. Dave and Phil were not far behind us. Ross had been involved with the construction of The Gravity Centre and regaled us with his insights, including the waterfall that can occur from the curved roof during heavy rains. Before we knew it, the time had come for us to make our way home. Thanks to Nigel for TEC duties.
WEDNESDAY WANDERERS REPORTS WEDNESDAY RIDE – 11 November 2020 A Little Crisp A goodly crew of sixteen this week, including Mike P (following some time out for recuperation), Ray Marlow (first proper ride on his new Yamaha) & Buce McK (first Wednesday ride on his Honda Deauville). I offered to try to provide a fumbling sort of leadership down to Jarrahdale. And, there being no counter proposal, that’s what we did. I managed reasonably well, but I know that I left a few turn signals to the last minute because I was unsure whether we’d reached the correct junction. Sorry. It’s mid-November, the onset of summer, a time of brightness, warmth and happiness. So what happened? It was like a cornflake, or a nicely prepared piece of bacon, a little crisp. In fact it was more than “a little”. My right middle finger, an ever-reliable early indicator of impending frostbite, had turned white! The route that we took (see map) had a bit of everything: suburbs, highways, Hills’ towns, orchards, forests, and narrow windy lanes. Inescapably it also had a good few traffic lights, but the group managed to keep together quite nicely. The Jarrahdale General Store provided us with coffee and vittles, and we provided each other with bonhomie. The homeward journey took the easy route via Byford and Tonkin. WEDNESDAY RIDE - 18 November 2020
About 18 bikes at Puma, Dave H suggested Rockingham or Lancelin and I put forward a ride I had been
thinking of and the consensus was for me to lead and Pom volunteered for TEC. We set off down
Gnangara and north on the Tonkin to the Brand hwy exit, up the Brand til the first Gingin turn-off, a short
catch-up here and off again bypassing east of Gingin on the road to Bindoon, left onto Wells-Glover and left
onto the Moora Rd, lovely Rd but we encountered a couple of semis, Colin and I passed the quicker last
one and then got held up behind the slower front one by continuous double lines, came around a bend and
there was our turn to the right Hay Flat Rd, fortunately no one coming in opposite direction which allowed
us to swing right because the semi was sitting right on Colin’s ginger. I believe Ludo missed the corner
marker and the boys chased him down. Lovely bit of road through Hay Flats up to Gt Northern and then
right and back to a small amount of roadworks on the Bindoon hill that had a massive length of road slowed
down to 60 and then 40, was doing 46 at top of hill when a cop car came the other way but stuck in a line of
traffic and he didn’t bother us, surprised how many of our guys didn’t see him, down to the Bakehaus for
our nosh and repartee which as always was very pleasant. About a dozen of us went home via Gingin and
Military Rd and the others headed back on Gt Northern, as always, an enjoyable morning of nearly 260 km.

WEDNESDAY RIDE – 25 November 2020
Uber-Reaction and Sh*tty-Chitty-Bang-Bang
Our crew this week comprised twenty-three riders including Paul and Shannon who had returned after
several weeks of travelling. Paul was almost unrecognisable in his Kris Kringle camouflage which was
cultivated, he says, for Movember (see the photo in the “On Any Wednesday Gallery”).
A number of destinations were considered, but we opted to be led by Dave H via the Whoopies, O’Brien
and Fernie Rd to Bakers Hill.
At the start, before we got to Alexander Rd, a large carpet flew out of the tray of a ute ahead. Luckily it
went to the ground and stayed there.
We’d only gone a short distance along Ocean Reef Rd when an Uber driver cut across lanes without
indicating, thereby putting some of our riders at risk. Luckily BP stopped and interviewed the driver wrt his
poor driving skills, lack of regard for fellow road users and the need to lift his game. Thanks BP, a most
appropriate Uber-reaction!
The rest of the ride unfolded pleasantly and predictably until we stopped for a leg-stretch at Brocky’s
memorial. In conversation it was discovered that Dave’s planned route to Bakers Hill would go through
Chitty Rd, and that Chitty Rd was mostly corrugated gravel. Accordingly, our route was changed to take us
through some Hills villages to Café Mojo in Mundaring, and we avoided a Sh*tty-Chitty-Bang-Bang.
The café describes itself as “A funky cafe with interesting eclectic furniture, amazingly friendly staff, and a
chilled homely atmosphere. We welcome all, including families, road warriors, and pets”. And this
description is spot on the money.
Needless to say (but I’m saying it) lively repartee and bonhomie prevailed until it was time to be homeward
bound. Some took a straightforward journey home and some, in the words of Dave H “went through
Mundaring Weir & Kalamunda & down to Great Eastern Hwy & Tonkin Highway & back the way we started
Ocean Reef Rd, a total 175ks & back by 12.15pm just in time for lunch”.
Thanks to all, especially our TEC Nigel.WEDNESDAY RIDE - 2 December 2020 A fine impromptu ride suggested by Mike P and led by Chris H to the Dome Café in Northam. Twenty of us headed out along Gnangara and the Whoopsies to follow a course through a number of Hills villages and wind up in Chidlow for a biological break. With a row of bikes outside the Chidlow Tavern, and a bunch of our crew sheltering from the sun in its doorways, it looked like we were eagerly awaiting opening time. Despite the brevity of our stop, Dave H couldn’t resist the allure of a hamburger on offer in the Bay Tree Café. Our onward journey included the narrow and bumpy Bailup and Katrine Roads, which tested the mettle of the riders and the suspension and lock-washers of the bikes. Talking about road conditions, I reckon that we encountered half a dozen stretches of road works with one-way traffic in force. Maybe they’re playing catch-up after the record wet November? The victuals at the Dome were as good as ever and we had plenty of seating to choose from both inside and out. One of our photos shows the “elite” at the Captains table. It was gone 11:30 by the time we started to mobilise for home, and what a splendid mess I made of it! First off, I followed someone thinking it was Mike P (it wasn’t) and ended up on the wrong street. Turn back. Next I overshot the road with the bridge out of town (‘cos I was sure there’d be a major signpost there). Turn back. Then I passed the Perth turn-off only to realise that I was on my way to Toodyay. Turn back again. Home at 1:30 somewhat tired and embarrassed. Thanks to Chris and TEC Mike P.
