Bull Shots June 2021 Old Town Chapter - # 8194 Harley Owners Group Brandon, FL www.oldtownhog.com Rick’s Reverbs Helen Georgia Hello Old Town Chapter Members & Guests, Well, like they say, all good things must come to an end. It is bittersweet that I announce that this is the last year that I am leading an overnight ride to Helen Georgia. This year will be the 13th year in a row that I have led this ride. Past Director (our chapter’s second director) Andre Chiasson led this ride both in 2007 & 2008. I started leading this ride in 2009 and have led it every year since then. This was a tough decision on my part, but I felt it was the right time to lead this final ride. Each year it has been a challenge to find new roads and restaurants for our riders. Some riders have been every year since joining the chapter while others try it once and never come back. The rides are not for the faint of heart as the roads are much more challenging than anything we have in Florida. The scenery is fantastic with mountain views, curvy roads and the occasional wildlife we see. We have had our fair share of good weather with very little humidity. Other times we have run into blinding rain and fog. You never know what you might run into when you get up in the elevations of the mountains. One of the worst rains we have ever been in was several years ago when we had just 8 miles to get to Helen. It hadn’t rained all day long until then. There was no place to pull over so we “rode it out”. Sarah’s radar on her cell phone showed Helen was under purple, not yellow or red. This will tell you how hard it was raining. By the time we reached town the gas stations and some streets were flooded. We were lucky that the rain stopped short- ly after we arrived, and the water receded. Here are some stats that I researched for attendance for the 12 years that I have led this ride: Total of 249 bikes which averages 21 bikes per year. Total of 324 bikers which averages 27 bikers per year. Total of 13 guests which averages 1 guest per year. Total of 65 attendees which averages 5 attendees per year. It has been an honor and pleasure to have done this ride all these years and the memories we have made will last a lifetime. Thanks to all of you for sharing these adventures. Old Town Chapter Director Rick Vincent 1
David Figure 8 Greetings everyone! I am sure you have noticed Summer is upon us. It has been getting hotter, but still the members keep coming out to ride. We get the normal morning long sleeve, or light jacket weather for the beginning of the ride, and we take off the layers as the ride continues. Our overnight rides have started, and the participation has been remarkable! I have been on both of the latest overnight rides, both Key West, and the Space Coast ride, and we have had an outstanding turn out for both. Thank you SRC Walter Schnider, and now retired RC Rick Bequette for your preparation of the routes, hotels and restaurants! Our overnight to Helen is only less than two weeks away, (at the time of this writing) and I can’t wait to go! Hopefully by the time you read this, I and others will be having a great time in Helen Ga. You may have noticed some new faces both on the rides and overnight trips. Guess what, your enthusi- asm is contagious! You have come on the rides, brought your friends, and they have joined. Now it is our job to make them feel welcome so they continue to come out. We have had some additions to our Road Captain staff, and they are showing tremendous enthusiasm! Our Dealership Is continually adding events to which we can participate. Many of you have come out for Bike Nights and sponsored events. Thank you! We actively search the Dealership website for updates. Don’t forget to shop at Brandon Harley! As you enter, notice all the exciting new and used motorcycles on display. Support our Dealership! Check our website, or check our Chapter Facebook page, you will find all the new and exciting rides and events we have for you. As you check the website a Oldtownhog.com, take a look at all the pictures our Photographer Holly Orlando has posted for us. Good job Holly! This Tuesday night, and weekend, we have a ride. We have over night rides. Check it out! Come out! Enjoy the beautiful weather we have in Florida! Let’s ride! The mountains are calliing us to come! 2

. Don’t Get In A Jam…Bee Safe June 2021 Spring was short, summer is here… Time to enter the wonderfully warm and sunny season of summer in Florida…from surface of the sun hot to Amazon Rainforest wet, all in one day…that’s Florida. But we love to ride so it won’t stop us In past articles I’ve talked about things to have with you, whether in your saddle bags or in a bag, like water, raingear, etc, so I’m not going to revisit that here…but I do want to talk about that first part of the Florida summer day…The surface of the sun! While it’s important year round, its especially important in the summer months…that’s PROTECTING OURSELVES FROM THE SUN! It doesn’t take long for a pleasant day riding with friends to turn into a miserable reminder when you cant get to sleep because every inch of you hurts from sunburn. So let’s talk about some good ways to protect yourself so that you can keep your focus on the joys of riding and not suffer because of a bad decision The best thing you can do is COVER UP…wear a long sleeve shirt. The best one’s to wear are the moisture wicking style shirts, a good brand of those actually has a UV rating of 30 meaning it not only helps cool you off, but it also prevents the sunburn too. And if you don’t have one, go visit our wonder- ful ladies in merchandise and get one now. A long sleeve shirt not only keeps the sun off you, it also slows the rate at which sweat evaporates and thus will let your body be more efficient in keeping cool too. Beyond a shirt, good sunglasses are important…yes, your eyes can get burned too. A good pair of UV rated sunglasses will protect your eyes from damage from the sun while also improving your vision clarity on those bright sunny days. Finally comes SUNSCREEN…whether you’re riding in short sleeves or jumped off the bike for a day at the beach, it’s a must! A lot of people say they don’t need sunscreen because they don’t burn…well, burn protection is just one benefit of sunscreen, a good UV rated sunscreen can also help protect your skin from damage from the sun, which can lead to skin cancer. When using sunscreen, you should put it on 30 minutes before you’re going to be out and then reapply regularly throughout the day. And finally..DRINK DRINK DRINK DRINK DRINK…lots and lots of water. Dehydration is bad news and can be deadly. There ya go….now you’re ready to enjoy our beautiful summer with a smile on your face, let’s ride! Bee Safe…Ride the OTC way Safety Officer Len Goellner lfgoellner@verizon.net 5

HAVE YOU SEEN THE COMMERCIALS ADVERTISING FOR MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE ? There are many examples: Remember the one where the rider has dollar bills falling off of him as he rides down the road. Another with a rider dressed in white clothes – pretending to be a biker, adding they are America’s #1 motorcycle insurer. A third example –people at the office near their work stations holding a note of their co-worker noting he saved so much money on his insurance, he decided to take time off for an adventure on the open road! Buyer Beware: There are insurance companies who want to sell you insurance; and, they brag about how much money you save by doing business with them. However, the problem is later down the road – after a motorcycle accident – you find out the at-fault driver had little or no insurance coverage; and to add insult to injury, we find many motorcycle insurance agreements themselves to be “empty products” to the biker, not providing adequate coverage! Accidents Happen: A local biker was travelling on U.S. 41, in Gibsonton on his way to Tampa when a Volkswagon Jetta made a left turn in front of him, violating his right of way, causing a serious motorcycle crash, with serious injuries, requiring admission in the hospital, surgeries and he is out of work for the next six months. Investigation revealed the at-fault driver had no insurance; and, the biker who thought he had full coverage learns he has no medical payments coverage, nor any uninsured motorist coverage. After such medical bills and lost wages, this biker is likely to file for bankruptcy! Protect Yourself: Make sure your motorcycle insurance has uninsured motorist coverage, the highest limits you can afford. For additional protection, revisit your automobile insurance coverage, making sure you have uninsured motorist coverage in the insurance agreement and making sure you have “stacked” coverage; as, the same may follow you if involved in a motorcycle crash. For additional information, visit HOG-LAW.com, click on the tab for “Helpful Information” and see our “Insurance” page – highlighting the “Five Facts Every Rider Should Know About Insurance Companies.” Call Brad: If you or someone you know has been involved in an accident, feel free to call me directly on my cell: (813) 220-7767 anytime 24/7 for a free and immediate consultation.
