The children described three visions that were given to them – one of hell, one PASTOR of the end to World War I, and a final vision of an unnamed pope Reverend Neil S. The final vision is believed to be the 717.761.1167 x3608 • frnsullivan@thegoodshep.org attempt on Pope John Paul II’s life when he was shot four times in DEACON Saint Peter’s Square on May 13, 1981. THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT WEEKLY BULLETIN LENTEN FAQS IS ASH WEDNESDAY A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION? Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation. But it is an extremely important day that the begins an extremely sacred season. Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence. WHY DO WE RECEIVE ASHES ON ASH WEDNESDAY? In the Old Testament, people put ashes on their heads to show sorrow for sins. Ashes are a sign of penance and call to us to turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. They also recall that our life on earth is temporary. We are made from dust and to dust we shall return. Just as God breathed His life into dirt when he created Adam, the first human, God can breathe new life into those who have fallen into sin and reorder the parts of our lives that need it. WHAT ARE THE RULES ABOUT FASTING AND ABSTINENCE? Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. Fasting allows one full meal and two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength (but together they should not equal another full meal). Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and fruit juice are allowed. The law of fasting obliges all between the ages of 18-59. When medical conditions would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. Abstinence prohibits the eating of meat. Fridays of Lent (in addition to Ash Wednesday and Good Friday) are days of abstinence in the United States. The obligation of abstinence applies to everyone over the age of 14. WHY CAN’T WE EAT MEAT ON ASH WEDNESDAY, LENTENS FRIDAYS, AND GOOD FRIDAY? It has the goal of love and surrender to God. This break in the normal routine serves as a reminder that the basic needs of life should point us to the goodness of God. Scripture has a long record of abstaining from certain foods as part of religious practice. We continue this practice, not because eating meat is bad, but to turn our minds more consciously to God.
