SAINT PHILIP’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH -ANNAPOLIS, MD- Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany January 30, 2022 10:30 AM 730 Bestgate Road Annapolis, MD 21401 1
WELCOME TO ST. PHILIP’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH St. Philip’s Mission Statement: Our mission is to restore people to unity with God and each other in Christ by promoting Stewardship, Community Outreach, Diverse Worship Services, Church Growth and the Involvement of Youth and Young Adults in the development of a cross generational church family. We are happy to have you visiting St. Philip’s today. If you are a guest or visitor, (in person) we hope you will take a moment to receive a welcome package and fill out the Guest Information Form inside. After filling out the form please place it in the collection plate or hand it to one of the greeters at the end of the service. (Guest online) We ask that you email us with your information, and we will mail you a welcome package. The order of the service is given in the leaflet. If the hymns are not printed, they can be found in the Hymnal, (H1982) which is the larger, blue book or in the Lift Every Voice and Sing II, (LEVAS) which is the multi-color book. The Great Hall is through the front doors on the right of the sanctuary, down the steps, through the doors, where fellowship is held immediately following the 10:30 AM service. The restrooms are also through the same sanctuary door, down the steps, turn left, go straight down to the end of the hallway, and turn right. You will see the restrooms on the left. Holy Communion is the sacred meal of the Christian faith. The Episcopal Church, as all churches rooted in the historic Christian faith, affirms that the sacrament of Baptism is the ancient and normative entry point for receiving the sacrament of Eucharist; we also believe that anyone who desires to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord is always welcome at God’s table. To receive the Bread, extend your open hands to the priest. To receive the Wine, you may sip from the chalice by gently guiding it by its base to your lips; or you may leave the Bread on your palm for a Eucharistic Minister to dip the bread in the cup and place on your tongue [intinction]; or you may receive the Wine in an individual cup. If there is anything that you would like to know about St. Philip’s or would like to become a member, please ask the Rector, one of the ushers, or one of the greeters. We hope that you enjoy your visit today and look forward to seeing you again. 2
THE GATHERING OF GOD’S PEOPLE Welcome The Rev. Randy K. Callender Opening Hymn “God is Love, let heaven adore him” v.1-3 H1982 #379 3
The people stand Opening Acclamation Presider Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. The Collect of Purity The Presider continues Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Gloria “Glory to God” H1982 #S277 4
The Collect of the Day Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD The people sit. A Reading from the Book of Jeremiah Jeremiah 1:4-10 The word of the LORD came to me saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. "Then I said, "Ah, Lord GOD! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy." But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am only a boy'; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you, Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD. " 5
Then the LORD put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the LORD said to me, "Now I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant." Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm of the Day (Read Responsively by whole verse) Psalm 71:1-6 1 In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge; *let me never be ashamed. 2 In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free; *incline your ear to me and save me. 3 Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe; *you are my crag and my stronghold. 4 Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, *from the clutches of the evildoer and the oppressor. 5 For you are my hope, O Lord GOD, *my confidence since I was young. 6 I have been sustained by you ever since I was born; from my mother's womb you have been my strength; *my praise shall be always of you. A Reading from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians 1Corinthians 13:1-13 If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 6
Then, all standing the Deacon reads the Gospel, first saying Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke People Glory to you, Lord Christ. The Holy Gospel of our Lord According to Luke Luke 4:21-30 Jesus began to speak in the synagogue at Nazareth: "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, "Is not this Joseph's son?" He said to them, "Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, 'Doctor, cure yourself!' And you will say, 'Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.'" And he said, "Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet's hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian." When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Rev. Randy K. Callender Please take a moment in silence to reflect on what you just heard and where God is calling you. All standing. The Nicene Creed Presider and People We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit, he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 8
The people stand, sit, or kneel. The Prayers of the People The Leader and People pray responsively Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. Prayers are said silently or aloud. Confession of Sin Presider Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence Presider and People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Presider Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. 9
The Presider says to the people The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. The people sit. THE HOLY COMMUNION The people stand or kneel. Eucharistic Prayer B Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give God thanks and praise. Presider continues It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your son Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus Holy, Holy, Holy LEVAS #252 12
The Presider continues We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days, you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father, Presider and People We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; 13
The Presider continues And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Philip and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. Presider And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, Presider and People Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Presider Alleluia, Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People Therefore let us keep the feast, Alleluia. Presider The Gifts of God for the People of God. Presider consumes the bread. Members and Guests will come up to receive a wafer (lead by the usher) You can consume the wafer at your seat. 14
Communion Hymn “Where true charity and love dwell” H1982 #606 The people stand. Post Communion Prayer Presider Let us pray. Presider and People Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. The Blessing 15
