But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised parler dans notre langue des merveilles de his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and Dieu!» Tous remplis d'étonnement et ne sachant all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, que penser, ils se disaient les uns aux autres: and listen to what I say. Alors toute personne qui fera appel au nom du Seigneur sera sauvée. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Ecoutez ce que l’esprit dit à l’Eglise. All. Thanks be to God. Tous. All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God and fellow-heirs with Christ. People. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your people. Minister. Renew the face of your creation, Creator of all, and pour on us the gifts of your Spirit, People. and kindle in us the fire of your love.
Minister. For the creation waits with eager longing for the glorious liberty of the children of God. People. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your people and kindle in us the fire of your love. 1st Hymn #645 (Common Praise - Canada) Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardor glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing; true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o’er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till they become the place wherein the Holy Spirit finds a dwelling. The Minister, turning to the people, shall say the Exhortation. In baptism we died with Christ, so that as Christ was raised from the dead, we might walk in newness of life. Let us receive new life in him as we confess our sins in penitence and faith.
A general Confession to be said of the whole Congregation with the Minister. Minister. Jesus Christ, risen and triumphant Lord, we come to you in sorrow for our sins, and confess to you our weakness and unbelief. We have lived by our own strength, and not by the power of your resurrection. In your mercy, forgive us. People. Lord, hear us and help us. Minister. We have lived by the light of our own eyes, as faithless and not believing. In your mercy, forgive us. People. Lord, hear us and help us. Minister. We have lived for this world alone, and doubted our home in heaven. In your mercy, forgive us. People. Lord, hear us and help us. The Absolution, or Remission of sins, to be pronounced by the Priest alone. May the God of love and power forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. Minister. O Lord, open thou our lips, People. And our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Minister. Send your Holy Spirit upon us, People. And clothe us with power from on high. Alleluia
Minister. Blessed are you, creator God, to you be praise and glory for ever. As your Spirit moved over the face of the waters bringing light and life to your creation, pour out your Spirit on us today so that we may walk as children of light and by your grace reveal your presence. Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! People. Blessed be God for ever! Canticle FROM THE NATIONS Ezekiel 36 The Spirit of God fills the whole world. Alleluia. I will take you from the nations, and gather you from all the countries. I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses. A new heart I will give you, and put a new spirit within you, And I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. You shall be my people, and I will be your God. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The Spirit of God fills the whole world. Alleluia. PSALM 104 (24-34, 35b) said together. O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Yonder is the sea, great and wide, creeping things innumerable are there, living things both small and great. There go the ships, and Leviathan that you formed to sport in it. These all look to you to give them their food in due season; when you give to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things. When you hide your face, they are dismayed; when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. When you send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the ground. May the glory of the LORD endure forever;
may the LORD rejoice in his works-- who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke. I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the LORD. Bless the LORD, O my soul. Praise the LORD! GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The Second Lesson. Canticle GLORY TO GOD Tune: Woodlands sung together Glory to God, we give you thanks and praise; of heavenly joy and earthly peace we sing, We worship you, to you our hearts we raise, Lord God, Almighty Father, heavenly King. Lord Jesus Christ, the Father's only Son, you bore for us the load of this world's sin. O Lamb of God, your glorious victory won, receive our prayer, grant us your peace within. Alone, O Christ, you only are the Lord, at God's right hand, in majesty most high: who, with the Spirit worshiped and adored, with all the heavenly host we glorify. The Third Lesson. En effet, si je ne he will prove the world wrong about sin and m'en vais pas, le défenseur ne viendra pas vers righteousness and judgment: about sin, because vous; mais, si je m'en vais, je vous l'enverrai et, they do not believe in me; about righteousness, quand il sera venu, il convaincra le monde en ce because I am going to the Father and you will see qui concerne le péché, la justice et le jugement: en me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler ce qui concerne le péché, parce qu'ils ne croient of this world has been condemned. like the vigour of the wind’s rush, like the new flame’s eager might: come, Holy Spirit, come. To the members of Christ’s body, to the branches of the vine, to the church in faith assembled, to her midst as gift and sign: come, Holy Spirit, come. With the healing of division, with the ceaseless voice of prayer, with the power to love and witness, with the peace beyond compare: come, Holy Spirit, come. Poem Pentecost Malcolm Guite (from the book Sounding the Seasons) read by Jessica Stillwell Today we feel the wind beneath our wings Today the hidden fountain flows and plays Today the church draws breath at last and sings As every flame becomes a Tongue of praise. This is the feast of fire, air, and water Poured out and breathed and kindled into earth. The earth herself awakens to her maker And is translated out of death to birth. The right words come today in their right order And every word spells freedom and release Today the gospel crosses every border All tongues are loosened by the Prince of Peace Today the lost are found in His translation. Whose mother-tongue is Love, in every nation. THE CREED
I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body, And the Life everlasting. Amen. Minister. The Lord be with you; People. And with thy spirit. Minister. Let us pray. Lord, have mercy upon us. People. Christ, have mercy upon us. Minister. Lord, have mercy upon us. All OUR Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen. Then the Priest standing up shall say: O Lord, show thy mercy upon us; People. And grant us thy salvation. Priest. O Lord, save the Queen; People. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Priest. Endue thy Ministers with righteousness; People. And make thy chosen people joyful. Priest. O Lord, save thy people; People. And bless thine inheritance. Priest. Give peace in our time, O Lord; People. And evermore mightily defend us. Priest. O God, make clean our hearts within us; People. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. THE COLLECT. ALMIGHTY AND EVERLIVING GOD, who fulfilled the promises of Easter by sending us your Holy Spirit and opening to every race and nation the way of life eternal, keep us in the unity of your Spirit, that
every tongue may tell of your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Second Collect, for Peace. O GOD, who art the author of peace and lover of concord, in knowledge of whom stands our eternal life, whose service is perfect freedom: Defend us thy humble servants in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in thy defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Third Collect, for Grace. O LORD our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day: Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by thy governance, to do always that is righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Law. OUR LORD Jesus Christ said: hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and write both these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. Reflection The Rev. Dr. Terry Hidichuk – Clergy Associate, St. Matthias’
Intercessions A General Thanksgiving, to be said by the Minister and people together Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all you have done for us. We thank you for the splendour of the whole creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love. We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for the loving care which surrounds us on every side. We thank you for setting us tasks which demand our best efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us. We thank you also for those disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone. Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom. Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know Christ and make him known; and through him, at all times and in all places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen. A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom. ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto thee; and dost promise that when two or three are gathered together in thy Name thou wilt grant their requests: Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. The Dismissal
Minister. Blessed are you, sovereign God, overflowing in love. With Pentecost dawns the age of the Spirit. Now the flame of heaven rests on every believer. Strong and weak, women and men tell out your word; the young receive visions, the old receive dreams. With the new wine of the Spirit they proclaim your reign of love. Amid the birth pangs of the new creation the way of light is made known. Source of freedom, giver of life, blessed are you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. People. Blessed be God forever. The congregation is invited to light their candles The Commission Minister. For fifty days we have celebrated the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ over the powers of sin and death. We have proclaimed God’s mighty acts and we have prayed that the power that was at work when God raised Jesus from the dead might be at work in us. As part of God’s Church, I call upon you to live out what you proclaim. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, will you dare to walk into God’s future, trusting him to be your guide? People. By the Spirit’s power, we will.
Minister. Will you dare to embrace each other and grow together in love? People. We will. Minister. Will you dare to share your riches in common and minister to each other in need? People. We will. Minister. Will you dare to pray for each other until your hearts beat with the longings of God? People. We will. Minister. Will you dare to carry the light of Christ into the world’s dark places? People. We will The Paschal candle and home candles are extinguished. Blessing Minister. May the Spirit, who hovered over the waters when the world was created, breathe into you the life she gives. People. Amen. Minister. May the Spirit, who overshadowed the Virgin when the eternal Son came among us, make you joyful in the service of the Lord. People. Amen. Minister. May the Spirit, who set the Church on fire upon the Day of Pentecost, bring the world alive with the love of the risen Christ.
People. Amen. Minister. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. People. Amen. Concluding Hymn #426 (Common Praise-Canada) I feel the winds of God today; today my sail I lift, though heavy oft with drenching spray, and torn with many a rift; if hope but light the water’s crest, and Christ my bark will use, I’ll seek the seas at his behest, and brave another cruise. It is the wind of God that dries my vain regretful tears, until with braver thoughts shall rise the purer, brighter years; if cast on shores of selfish ease or pleasure I should be, Lord, let me feel your freshening breeze, and I’ll put back to sea. If ever I forget thy love and how that love was shown, lift high the blood-red flag above; it bears thy name alone. Great Pilot of my onward way, thou will not let me drift; I feel the winds of God today, today my sail I lift.
Dismissal Minister. Filled with the Spirit’s power, go in the light and peace of Christ. Alleluia, alleluia. People. Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia.
