Focusing on Women A Woman what would we do without them Of Influence Read: Proverbs 31:10-31 During the early years of the Protestant Reformation in Europe, Katharina Von Bora, a former nun, married Martin Luther (1525). By all accounts, the two had a joyous married life. Luther said, “There is no bond on earth so sweet, nor any separation so bitter, as that which occurs in a good marriage.” Because Katharina rose at 4 a.m. to care for her responsibilities, Luther referred to her as the “morning star of Wittenberg.” She was industrious in tending the vegetable garden and orchard. Also, she administered the family business and managed the Luthers’ home and property. In time, the couple had six children for whom Katharina felt the home was a school of character development. Her energetic industry and care of the family made her a woman of influence. Katharina seems to have been a woman like the one described in Proverbs 31. She was indeed a virtuous wife who awoke “while it [was] yet night” and provided “food for her household” (v.15). She also watched “over the ways of her household, and [did] not eat the bread of idleness” (v. 27). From role models like Katharina, we can learn about the love, diligence, and fear Portrait of Katharina Von Bora of the Lord that’s needed to be a woman of influence. 1499—1552 Katharina Von Bora - Biography/Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katharina_von_Bora “On Mother’s Day, I think moms should be able to wake up and say to Joys of motherhood themselves: I’m not just a housewife, I’m a domestic goddess! • A hug for no reason. —Barbra Johnson • Belly laughs. • The light-bulb moment when your child understands something you’ve been trying to teach them. • Smiles and giggles. • Mud pies. • Arms raised in the air after a big accomplishment. • Hearing Scripture and prayer from your child’s lips. • Quiet moments on the couch. • Reading aloud together. • A family meal filled with conversation and laughter, • Watching your child be kind to another. • Recognizing a moment you’d like to freeze in time. “Joy is a net of love by which • A child’s look of surprise and joy. you can catch souls.” • A quiet conversation that heals a wounded heart. • The words “I love you” - and a sticky kiss. —Mother Teresa —Unknown “Any mother could perform the jobs “As women, we want to know of several air-traffic controllers with we are important and that we have a ease.” —Lisa Alther significant place in our world. Presbyterian Women The Presbyterian Women of Burley met on Wednesday afternoon, April 10, with 6 women present. As our available church weekend’s calendar was pretty full, it was decided we would meet after our last Lenten Luncheon, and schedule our Annual Birthday program. The group participated in the worship service, as directed by the Presbyterian Women, Inc. Kathy and Carleen were in charge, and each donated to the Birthday Offering. In 2019 we celebrate the Birthday Offering by supporting these four projects: Disaster Response Team, Presbytery of Charlotte—PW’s grant will help provide a warehouse, parking and security fencing for household goods, food, hygiene and school kits, clean-up buckets, mobile shower units and trailers. Effingham Child Development Center Playground, Illinois, will use PW’s grant to improve the centers playground. Presbyterian Homes and Services of Kentucky, Inc. will improve the quality of life and safety for residents in the Appalachia region of Eastern Kentucky. Wings of Refuge Restoration Home, Iowa, provides a safe and healing space for women survivors of human trafficking. All had applied, and were granted some of these funds that were raised with this offering. After our meeting we decorated “Birthday Cupcakes” furnished by Kathy and Carleen, and those who could, helped the Deacons set up for their Yard Sale. Remember, all women of the church are members of PW, and are welcomed to attend. Yours in Christ Carleen Clayville, Moderator P. S. Committee Reports A NOTE FROM YOUR FINANCE TEAM The following is part of an article I found about giving. I think you might find it interesting. “One of the curious things about Presbyterians and steward- ship is that those who have the least tend to give the most. Percentage-wise more people with incomes of less than $25,000 tithe (give 10 percent) than those with a greater income. The same is true of the way they give their time and talents to the church. Perhaps it is because they have learned one of the great theological and Biblical truths that Malachi taught the Hebrew people about the reward of the faithful: ‘Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, ... see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing Blessing’ (3:10).” We hope all these blessings pour down on each of you. The closing stanza of “Now I Resolve With All My Heart,” one of Steel’s 144 hymns, is a timeless prayer that’s fitting for the start of each new day.
