ITINERARY DETAIL NOTE 5: CROW REHABILITATION CENTRE You will visit the CROW (Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife) founded 35 years ago. It was one of South Africa’s first dedicated wildlife rehabilitation centres. Today, CROW is still KwaZulu-Natal’s only registered wildlife rehabilitation centre dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of all indigenous wildlife found in KwaZulu-Natal. Although you will not be able to handle the animals, the work you do there will directly benefit them. NOTE 6: EAC: RESEARCH & CONSERVATION / CULTURAL WALK For the research and conservation element of the EAC you will take part in: Pitfall surveys— invertebrates and reptiles. Biodiversity studies and game counts. Animal behaviour and identification studies working with giraffes, zebra, nyala, leopard and more. Building and maintaining the enclosures. Data capture from ongoing projects. Plastic removal from the river bank. The cultural walk goes into the village called Nompondo where we visit schools, homesteads and learn more about real Zulu life. Presentations will be given in some of the rural schools in the Nompondo community. NOTE 7: EBANDLA CAMP AND TRAILS Ebandla Camp is situated inside Amakhosi private game reserve, which is a big five reserve, with rhino species, buffalo, elephant, leopard, cheetah and a very healthy population of lion on the property. It is also rich in incredible plant and bird life. It is a tented camp surrounded by a stone seating area, complete with fire pit for cooking and added ambience at night. The view that stretches out beyond this stone platform, is awe-inspiring. Facilities include hot water, shower & toilet block, camp kitchen & snack shop. The group will walk the trails with a qualified trails ranger. NOTE 8: COMMUNITY PROJECT WORK We rotate around various schools in the Kosi Bay area in order to spread the work so everyone benefits. The exact location is finalised closer to the time to ensure we work with the school that needs the most help at that time. The sort of work may well involve gardening, painting, decorating, carpentry, playing games and generally getting involved in school life. www.outposts.co.uk | 01823 451959 | info@outposts.co.uk #OpenExped2021
ITINERARY DETAIL NOTE 9: EAC: MARINE ECOLOGY / LAKE ST LUCIA Lake St Lucia is situated in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa's first Natural World Heritage Site. It is home to the country’s biggest population of hippos, approx. 1,000 crocodiles and a wealth of plant and animal life. Habitats range from coral reefs, beaches, coastal forests, salt and fresh water marshes to the open estuarine waters of Lake St. Lucia. This is a remarkably beautiful place and you will go on a boat cruise around the area. Other mammals to look out for include buffalo, rhino, zebra, eland, kudu and even leopard. Turtles use the protective beaches here to breed each November. NOTE 10: TEMBE ELEPHANT PARK More than 200 elephants tramp the quiet paths through the brush, secure in the safety of this haven. It is a rare eco-system, this transition zone between tropical and sub-tropical, and this ecological diversity suits not only the elephants but also huge numbers of other animal and bird species. To preserve the pristine wilderness, Tembe park management employs a minimum-impact policy: non-intrusive visitor facilities; sand roads; sympathetic environmental management. You will go on a 3 hour game drive in an open safari vehicle with a professional, qualified guide. NOTE 11: GAME DRIVE All under the expert guidance of highly trained and very experienced guides and rangers you will spend a full day at the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. It is the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa, well-known for its rich wildlife and conservation efforts which have contributed to this park having the largest population of white rhino in the world. It consists of 960 km² (that’s nearly the size of Hong Kong) of breath-taking hilly terrain that you will tour in safari vehicles in search of the big five—elephants, rhinos, buffalos, lions and leopards! NOTE 12: ELEPHANT & CHEETAH INTERACTION Elephant interaction: Enjoy an up close and personal meeting with Rambo, Rachel and Jabulani the elephants. You will be given opportunity to feed them as well as touch Rambo’s ears, behind his tusks, between his front legs, and you will even get to feel his tongue! Cheetah interaction: Visit a cheetah project where you will have the chance to stroke some of the tamed cats which have been raised in captivity (for various different reasons) and learn more about these wonderful creatures. www.outposts.co.uk | 01823 451959 | info@outposts.co.uk #OpenExped2021
