St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church 14020 Foster Road, La Mirada CA 90638 T YtÅ|Äç Éy Yt|à{ Celebrating 65 Years! • REVEREND FATHER ANTHONY GARCIAS Administrator • REV. MR. MARK ORCUTT Deacon • REV. MR. TIM ROBERTO Deacon FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT NOVEMBER 28, 2021 A MESSAGE FROM FR. ANTHONY Advent: A Season of Preparation The Season of Advent begins this Sunday. It is a time of spiritual preparation for the celebration of Christ’s Coming. The surrounding culture has already been marketing Christmas for some weeks. Christmas displays have been in some stores before Halloween, and a certain radio station in our city has already been broadcasting nonstop Christmas music since November 12! This was not always so; in decades past, there used to be a social understanding of respect for each season and celebration having its own space and time (more or less). The blurring of Halloween- Thanksgiving-Christmas into one long commercial event reveals a culture that no longer understands the need of the human soul for pauses, for quiet reflection and preparation before beginning a new stage of the journey. Frenzied celebration, without preparation and engagement of our hearts and minds, only results in feelings of emptiness and loneliness because we hunger for meaning and purpose in life. We can decide this Advent to be counter-cultural, to give ourselves the time and space we need for God, for family, for the renewal of our spirit in the peace that we encounter only in Christ. Additional Confession Times One of the best ways to prepare a clean dwelling place for Christ in our hearts is the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession). Instead of a large gathering for a penance service this Advent, I will offer an additional hour of Confession each week of Advent. We will still have our normal Confession time on Saturday at 4:00 PM. The additional hour will be on different days each week to accommodate parishioners with different schedules. Friday, Dec 3 at 9:30 AM; Saturday, Dec 11 at 8:00 AM; Wednesday, Dec 15 at 6:00 PM; Tuesday, Dec 21 at 9:15 AM. There will be no Confession times on Christmas Day.
