Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time 3 October 17, 2021 Through his suffering, my Servant will justify many. From the book of the Prophet Isaiah, we hear this teaching given to the people of Israel as they are returning from the second exile. “Through his suffering my servant will justify many”. In Isaiah, the church believes that “My Servant” is the coming Christ, “The Anointed One”. “My” is God the Father who sends His son. “Justify”, through the Cross and Resurrection, it is Jesus who empties himself to purchase our soul from the Devil. In Jesus, the account is paid in full. What is left to say? My dear Jesus, You are my teacher, healer and redeemer. Now let’s take an even closer look. “Many” why not all? For some strange reason there are those who reject God’s love and choose hate, and even violence. It leaves me puzzled and confused having learned from rock poor people of the joy of the Lord and from the most worldly minded folks whose hearts have been touched by God: “Father, I didn’t know. This is beautiful”. We called it: wonder and awe in his presence. Many graces are granted to each of us in our lifetime. The most significant is our very life as children of the Father, redeemed in the blood of his Son and sanctified daily in the Holy Spirit. With these graces we have an opportunity like none other. We have the opportunity to imitate Christ and become Servant Leaders ourselves. When we put Christ first, we will begin to see the divine in every person. We will begin to encourage one another. We begin a life of service to our family, neighbor and stranger. A sacrificial service like mother and father at hospital bedside. Like a doctor without borders, taking that risk to share care and training with the very poor who can’t possibly make a return. Servant Leaders do so ‘for the love of God’ and hope of eternal life. We yearn to hear the voice of the Lord say: “well done, faithful servant, receive my Fathers joy”. The drawing above, entitled “A Man on a Cross”, appeared in the May/June 2020 issue of Maryknoll Magazine. Sister Kathleen Reiley shares the cancer story of Yuki a 13-year-old Japanese boy. When Yuki died, Sister Reiley talked to his mother. The mother told her that one day the children were doing an art project in the children’s ward and were asked to draw anything they wanted. “They didn’t have any special model or anything,” says Sister Reiley. “This is what he drew.” She shows Yuki’s drawing: a man on a cross. God bless you. Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time 5 October 17, 2021 Saints Simon and Jude School NEWS!! At Saints Simon and Jude, we always look for ways to better our school for the benefit of our students. Saints Simon and Jude School, preschool through grade eight, is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and is seeking re-accreditation in the spring of 2022. This week, we welcomed our Middle States Association Team Chair for a one-day visit. He met with our administration and internal coordinators; had a building tour and discussed school facilities; and met with a school board member and administrators to discuss finances. He will return November 8, 9, and 10 for our official re-accreditation visit, and will be joined virtually by three additional team members. SSJ teachers and staff members began our road to re-accreditation this past school year by working on committees for each standard. Our stakeholders – teachers, staff, parents, students, and school board members – were surveyed in relation to each standard. Based on the survey feedback, three main objectives were identified for our re-accreditation: Student Performance Objective One: By the year 2028, the students at Saints Simon and Jude School will demonstrate improved reading skills. Student Performance Objective Two: By the year 2028, the students at Saints Simon and Jude School will demonstrate an increased knowledge and awareness of global citizenship as means to increase understanding, acceptance, and appreciation of diverse cultures in order to promote Catholic Social Teachings. Organizational Objective: By the year 2028 there will be an increase in the total student enrollment while retaining currently enrolled students at Saints Simon and Jude School. I will continue to keep you updated on the process of our Middle States re-accreditation. I am extremely grateful for everyone who has worked, and continues to work, on this very important endeavor. I am especially thankful for our internal coordinators, Mrs. Jackie Dryfoos and Mrs. Christy Farrell, for the countless hours they have spent. Thank you all! Blessings, Sister Regina Elinich, IHM Congratulations !! Anelah McComas (grade 7) and Amelia Foret (grade 8). Anelah and Amelia were inducted into Bishop Shanahan’s Junior Honor Society on Tuesday, October 5. The criteria for this honor is that the students exhibit the qualities of Leadership, Service, Scholarship, and Character. We, your SSJ Family, rejoice with you and your family on this wonderful achievement. We are SSJ proud! Saints Simon and Jude School Registration Registration is open for new students in classes with available space for this school year.
