August 1, 2021 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Moving Out of Our Comfort Zone Have you ever had to step out of your comfort zone? How did you feel? Were you anxious, perhaps scared? Were you tempted to go back to your comfort zone, to the familiar, even though you knew that to do so would be a mis- take? Did you forget, or chose to ignore, the compelling reasons that made you leave your comfort zone in the first place? These feelings and questions are not new, nor are they uncommon. Whenever we venture into unknown territo- ry, whenever we leave our comfort zones behind, feelings of anxiety and uncertainty, as well as questions about the wis- dom of our decision, are sure to arise. When they do, what gives us the strength to overcome our doubts and fears; what keeps us focused on moving forward? This week’s readings grapple with these feelings and questions as well. Exodus takes us into the desert with the recently liberated Israelites. Freed from slavery in Egypt and on their way to the Promised Land, the Israelites have second thoughts when they encounter the challenges that accompany a move out of their comfort zone into the unknown. In Egypt they were maltreated and slaves, but they had food and wa- ter. In the desert, they have run out of both and are tempted to look back with nostalgia to Egypt, where they had been desperately unhappy and mercilessly oppressed. They want to trade their new-found freedom so that they can sit by their fleshpots and eat their fill of bread. They have forgotten that the Lord who delivered them from slavery is in their midst and will continue to do great things for them – to care for them and help them overcome any challenge, no matter how great – if only they will turn to him in faith and trust, if only they will continue moving forward. Out of his compassion and love, and despite the Israelites’ ingratitude and complaints, the Lord gives his people what they most need: bread and meat. He rains down manna on this stiff-necked, rebellious, ungrateful people. God does not abandon his people, even when they abandon him. Out of God’s abundant generosity and mercy, which the Israelites do not merit and cannot earn, the people are given the means to continue their journey out of their comfort zone to the Promised Land, that they might know that I, the Lord am your God. Paul makes the same point in Ephesians. The Christian community is experiencing anxiety and doubt about the new way they have chosen to live. They have left the comfort zone of their former pagan lives to follow Jesus and, as a result, they are plagued by many challenges. Their families have disowned them, and the secular authorities are perse- cuting them. The temptation to return to the security and comfort of their former lives must have been great. Amid these circumstances, however, Paul exhorts the Ephesians to no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds, but to put away the old self of your former way of life. Paul reminds them that they have been created for righteousness and holiness of truth. Through their baptisms into Christ, they have left behind deceitful desires and have put on the new self. They have left their old comfort zones behind. Just as God accompanied the Israelites through the desert to the Promised Land, so he will shepherd the Christian community through its difficulties, as long as it stays the course, be- cause the truth is in Jesus. If Exodus and Ephesians deal with the difficulties of moving out of one’s comfort zone to follow the path of the Lord, John emphasizes what will keep us faithful to Christ and the Christian journey. Those seeking Jesus, after the “sign” of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, had many questions, which are often our questions, too. Like them, we also demand of Jesus, “what sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you?” Jesus makes clear that the manna given to the Israelites in the desert was not a gift of Moses, but from God, the author of all gifts. Even so, this manna lasted only for a day and then perished. Therefore, Jesus tells us not to work for food that perishes. Do not be distracted by what the world offers – by riches, power, success, or other things that may satisfy us for a brief moment but never last. Work instead for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. Jesus himself is the sign. He is the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. This new manna never perishes but endures forever. It is the manna that nourishes us in our Christian lives and that helps us put away the old self of our former lives. Like Jesus’ contemporaries, like the Ephesians, and like the Israelites who journeyed through the desert, we also ask what we need to do to accomplish the works of God? The answer is always the same: This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent. If we want to stay faithful to our Christian journey, if we want to overcome any challenge along the way, if we want to resist the temptation to return to Egypt, if we want to leave our comfort zones and walk confidently and fearlessly into the future God has in store for us, then we must have faith in the one he has sent. We must have faith in Jesus, who is the true bread from heaven and gives life to the world. Blessings, Fr. Chris 2

STEWARDSHIP CORNER Reflec ons on Sunday readings in the context of Stewardship. August 1, 2021 — 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily por on; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my instruc ons or not.” EXODUS 16:4 When the Israelites gathered more than their daily por on of manna, the surplus became wormy and ro en. In the same way today, self-reliance, pride and ego leads to hoarding and excessive surplus of goods and money. Living a stewardship lifestyle helps us discern our “wants” from our “needs”. Living a grateful and generous lifestyle reminds us that God will provide all that we need and that we have plenty to share. 5 Ways to celebrate the Immaculate Heart of Mary this August Did you know that in the Catholic Church, each of the 12 months of the year has a devo onal theme? August is the beau ful month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Here are 5 ways you can more closely align your life to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. 1. Create a home altar honoring the Immaculate Heart Choose a pain ng, holy card, or statue depic ng the Immaculate Heart of Mary and place it in the center of your dining table or mantle. Have the children help to pick out he flowers that will adorn your humble home altar. Ask them to pick blooms in red or Stain glass image of the Sacred pink (whether from your home garden, or the local store) that will remind you of Heart of Mary found inside St. Mary’s beau ful heart. Have a simple home prayer service for the Immaculate Heart of Mary by saying favorite Marian prayers together as a family, playing a beau ful Marian song like “Ave Maria” (and even singing along as a family) and then enjoying the dessert in celebra on of Mary. To make it even more meaningful, make enough cookies or an extra cake and bring to someone who could use a good cheering up! 3. Begin the First Five Saturdays devotion 4. The negative effects of the pandemic on children are just begin- ning to be seen, as children head back to schools and daycares, some for the first time in well over a year. Children may be struggling socially, academically, and developmentally, due to a year of social distancing and predominantly online interaction. Work with your children to discuss how they are feeling — check in often for any signs that they might be overwhelmed or struggling. For more information, read the article, “The impact of social distancing on young children.” 6
