BURLINGTON/LYONS TRI-PARISH CATHOLIC COMMUNITY ST. JOSEPH, LYONS– ST. CHARLES & IMMACULATE CONCEPTION ST. MARY, BURLINGTON Mission Statement: St. Charles Borromeo, St. Joseph, Immaculate Conception, (St. Mary), united in proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ through His saving death and resurrection, by calling, forming and sending disciples to go out and make new disciples. As a people, we are called to encounter Jesus, and grow as disciples through the sacramental life of the church.
A Message from Fr. Jim . . . Building up the Kingdom of God Carrying on work of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ should be a major focus in the life of a Christian. Every day we have innumerable opportunities to demonstrate our faith in Jesus and to share that faith with those who may be questioning or doubting the truth of Jesus’ message. In doing this we continue the work of our Lord and build up the Kingdom of God. Today’s Gospel shares the beautiful discourse of Jesus describing Himself as the vine and you and I being the branches. Using this image, Jesus teaches what our relationship with Him must be like. Jesus tells us we must remain united to Him as branches are united to a vine. We can remain united to Je- sus by three ways in particular: by gathering in His name, by listening to His word, and by sharing His Body and Blood. Jesus told His disciples, “Where two or three come together in my name I am there with them.” When we gather in Jesus' name we have His promise that He's there with us. Jesus told His disciples, “Whoever listens to you listens to me.” When we hear the Gospel read and explained, we have Jesus' promise that we listen to Him. Fi- nally, Jesus told His disciples, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks by blood lives in me, and I live in him.” When we share the Lord's Supper, we have Jesus' promise that He's united with us. It is important to remember that the Church is not a place where people gather. It’s the people who gather. The Church is not a place where people gather to pray. It’s the people who gather to pray. To have a body called the Church we must come together. Only by gathering together do we become the Church of Jesus Christ. Only by gathering together do we make Jesus’ Church visible to our world. Only by gathering together do we make the Risen Jesus' presence come alive in our community. It is only by working together as the Body of Christ that we can continue the mission of building up the Kingdom of God. God bless you always! Fr. Jim Volkert The First Deacon This weekend I am being ordained a transitional deacon (I am transitioning to becoming a priest). Therefore, I thought it appropriate to reflect on one of the first deacons and martyrs, St. Stephen. Shortly after Pentecost, the Apostles chose men who could serve and assist in their ministry, and Stephen was among them. Soon, he began teaching others of Christ, and the Jewish leaders did not like it. In fact, they killed him for teaching about Jesus. Oftentimes, our world tries to ignore us. But they stop ignoring us when we uphold truth; and we might have to pay for it. People do not like our joyful freedom in Christ and our confidence in the love of God. They hate us for insisting on objective truth, and Stephen shows us that Christians uphold the truth. But upholding the truth often means not being the favorite opin- ion of the world. May God bless you all, Steven Weller SACRIFICIAL GENEROSITY Did you miss Religious Education this year?
