SHEEP HEAR MY VOICE by Deacon Jim McDonough Sheep don’t have a reputation for being very smart. They tend to go wherever the flock goes, and they can be easily led astray if they aren’t tended carefully. So, it can feel a bit odd when Jesus refers to us as His sheep. However, it should give us comfort knowing that our Good Shepherd will keep us safe and sound. Today we think about Jesus as our Good Shepherd. Thinking of Him, like this, reminds us of the intimacy and friendship between us. Jesus says, “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27) These are beautiful descriptions of Jesus being close to us and protecting us. In the Gospel, we hear Jesus saying what He gives to His sheep, “I give them eternal life.” This is not the first time Jesus tells us that He gives eternal life. When Jesus met the woman at the well in Samaria, He said to her, “the water that I shall give will become a spring welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14) So Jesus is the Good Shepherd, who holds us in His hand to protect us, and promises us eternal life through Baptism and the Eucharist. Jesus not only offers eternal life, but He also wants us to be close to Him, now, in this life. Jesus never stops calling His sheep. He chases us and calls us by name. After His resurrection, He called Mary Magdalene by name when she went to prepare Him for burial. He called out to Thomas to touch His wounds. In our Gospel, Jesus gives us another picture of His intimacy for His sheep when He says, “No one can take them out of my hand.” (John 10:28) The famous Footprints poem also reminds us of how close God is to each of us. “I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there has only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed READINGS FOR THE WEEK you most, have you not been there for me?” The Lord replied, “The years when you have seen only one set of footprints, my child, is when I carried you.” This assurance of His protection should make us feel loved and confidant. In spite of knowing this, there are times when we feel vulnerable. Flying in an airplane, being in a boat, or witnessing a storm with tornado sirens blaring can unnerve us. Or is our fear most exposed in relationships, where we worry about being hurt or Sunday: Acts 13:14, 43-52/Ps 100:1- let down? Do we ever feel vulnerable in our relationship with God? 2, 3, 5 [3c]/Rv 7:9, 14b-17/Jn 10:27-30 It’s easy to worry that if we do or say the wrong thing, we may get Monday: Acts 11:1-18/Ps 42:2-3; into trouble. Perhaps we deal with guilt that we have alienated God 43:3, 4/Jn 10:1-10 so much that He will give up on us. Tuesday: Acts 11:19-26/Ps 87: 1b-3, 4-5, 6-7/Jn 10:22-30 Do we wonder if we will make it to Heaven? In today’s Gospel, Wednesday: Acts 12:24—13:5a/ Jesus confronts these fears. Ps 67:2-3, 5, 6 and 8/Jn 12:44-50 He says, “I give my sheep eternal life, and they shall never perish. Thursday: Acts 13:13-25/Ps 89: No one can take them out of My hand” (John 10:28). He says, “My Father, who has given them to me, is greater 10-11ab/Jn 14:1-6 than all” (John 10:29).
