Livestreaming begins at 10:25 a.m. Our Vestry supports the Rev. Elizabeth in requiring masks during our worship services and during gatherings of 25 people or more in any of our buildings. The Celebrant says to the People Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. PEOPLE And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. The Celebrant says Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. OFFICIANT The Lord be with you. PEOPLE And also with you. OFFICIANT Let us pray. COLLECT OF THE DAY Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ’s glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING Isaiah 62:1-5 All sit. A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. 1 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. 2 The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. 3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4 You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; 4
but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. 5 For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. READER The Word of the Lord. PEOPLE Thanks be to God. PSALM 36:5-10 Dixit injustus Please join me in reading the psalm responsively by half verse. 5 Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, * and your faithfulness to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the strong mountains, 6 your justice like the great deep; * you save both man and beast, O LORD. 7 How priceless is your love, O God! * your people take refuge under the shadow of your wings. 8 They feast upon the abundance of your house; * you give them drink from the river of your delights. 9 For with you is the well of life, * and in your light we see light. 10 Continue your loving-kindness to those who know you, * and your favor to those who are true of heart. SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 A Reading from Paul's First Letter to the Church in Corinth. 1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. 3Therefore I want you to understand that 5
no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says “Let Jesus be cursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. READER The Word of the Lord. PEOPLE Thanks be to God. All stand as they are able. HYMN Holy Spirit, Font of Light Webbe The Hymnal 1982 #228 (st. 1-3) 6
HOLY GOSPEL John 2:1-11 PRIEST The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. PEOPLE Glory to you, Lord Christ. 1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” 5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. 9When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. PRIEST The Gospel of the Lord. PEOPLE Praise to you, Lord Christ. SERMON The Rev. Rich Kunz 7
NICENE CREED All stand as they are able. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 8

CELEBRANT Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. PEOPLE It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your son Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: SANCTUS AND BENEDICTUS William Mathias The Hymnal 1982 #S-128 The Celebrant continues 12
We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father, Celebrant and People We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; The Celebrant continues And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Philip, and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. 13
By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. The Celebrant then continues As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, People and Celebrant Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND FRACTION ANTHEM CELEBRANT We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ. PEOPLE We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. Alleluia! THE COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE All who seek Christ are invited to receive the bread (at this time, due to Covid restrictions, we only receive the bread). Receive the bread in your cupped hands. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. Please wait for an usher to release you from your pew to come forward and receive the consecrated bread standing (to maintain social distancing, we will not use the altar rail until further notice). 14
HYMN When Christ’s Appearing Was Made Known Erhalt uns, Herr The Hymnal 1982 #132 After Communion, the Celebrant says Let us pray. The people stand as they are able. Celebrant and People PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION (10:30 a.m. only) Gracious God, since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen. 15
POST COMMUNION PRAYER Celebrant and People Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. PRAYER FOR THE EUCHARISTIC VISITORS (Eucharistic Visitors occasionally will take Communion to parishioners unable to worship with us.) Leader In the name of this congregation, we send you forth bearing these holy gifts, that those to whom you go may share with us in the communion of Christ’s body and blood. Main St. in Brevard. Participants should bring a bag lunch. Drinks and snacks will be provided. Centering Prayer is a silent, meditative form of prayer used by millions of people throughout the world. As taught by the originator of the method, Fr. Thomas Keating, the prayer is based on monastic practices followed by monks and nuns for more than 1,000 years. Workshop participants will learn the 4-step method of Centering Prayer, the history and theory behind the practice, and experience two periods of the prayer. There will be multiple periods of questions and answers during the day. This introductory event will be led by Dr. Rob Field, Director of Center for Spiritual Wisdom in Brevard. Field is a trained & certified presenter of Centering Prayer, having led dozens of workshops and retreats for the past 15 years. No prior experience or religious background is required in order to participate. To reserve your place for this Introduction to Centering Prayer, please contact the church office at (828) 884-3666 or office@stphilipsbrevardnc.org. GENESIS THROUGH ART WITH BELTON ZEIGLER - A ZOOM CLASS Tuesdays, January 25 through February 22, 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM Please join Belton Zeigler, a new (part-time) St. Philippian, for this special series, January 25 through February 22. This series is co-sponsored by the Cathedral of All Saints in Albany, NY. Click here to fill out the form (then click submit to receive the Zoom link). Painters like Rubens and Rembrandt, visionaries like Blake, illustrators like Tissot, and other artists down the ages have turned time and again to the later chapters of Genesis as subjects for their art. And why should it be otherwise? The stories they found there include the sale of Esau's birthright; Rebekka stage managing the theft of Esau's blessing; Jacob's flight to Laban; his vision of angels ascending and descending on earth; Jacob and Rachel's rapturous first meeting; their family's later flight from Laban; and Jacob wrestling with the angel during the night before reconciling with his once murderously-minded brother Esau. And then, in the next generation, come Tamar's
seduction of Judah; Joseph's immature boasting of his future preeminence; Joseph's near murder and sale in to slavery by his jealous brothers; and their tearful reuniting in Pharaoh's Egypt. The masters of visual arts who drew and painted these scenes mastered also the theological and human nuances embedded in these stories. Their works cast an astonishingly fresh light on the meaning and depth of these chapters of Scripture. This offering will provide a retelling of these stories and a review of paintings and drawings they inspired to bring into focus the human and spiritual dynamics that were so insightfully captured by the artists. The goal is to combine text and art to show how God advanced the story of Israel's salvation and called mature faith out of the disordered lives of his servants, Isaac, Rebekka, Jacob, Rachel, and Joseph. Participants should gain a new appreciation of the truths about God and humanity hidden in these chapters as discovered and revealed by the artists who sought to recreate these stories visually. YOU BELONG! CONFIRMATION AND RECEPTION IN THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH On May 1st, we will celebrate the Feast of Saint Philip and welcome Bishop Jose McLoughlin to our parish. During his visit, Bishop José will confirm, receive, or renew the baptismal vows of those seek to make or renew commitments to Christ and his church. Confirmation and reception are the “official” means for joining St. Philip’s and the Episcopal Church. Adults who are interested in receiving one of these rites during the Bishop’s visit, please contact Rev. Elizabeth at rector@stphilipsbrevardnc.org. The Rector’s Forum on Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m. in the YAC (large downstairs room) serves as the new member class. In addition, several classes will be offered during the winter and spring months in preparation for joining the Episcopal Church. Once we know who is interested, we will find days and times for additional classes that work for participants. Youth ages 13 and up are also invited to prepare for confirmation on May 1 with Bishop José. Please contact Rev. Elizabeth at rector@stphilipsbrevardnc.org if your young person is ready to seek an adult affirmation of his or her faith.
