A ROUND THE T ABLE Rev. Denis B. Theroux, Pastor Sixth Sunday of Easter Dear Friends, Today’s Gospel continues Jesus’s conversation with his disciples that began with last week’s Gospel, with Jesus using the image of the vine and the branches. Realizing that his time was short, Jesus encourages his followers to remain closely connected with God and with each other. In this morning’s Gospel, Jesus speaks about love and obedience, two words that we do not always think of as complementary concepts. For Jesus, love requires some form of commitment or determination or it is a mindless emotion. But such obedience must serve a greater good, bringing about some clear bene t, or it is coercion and bullying. I was told the story of a teacher, testing his students in an expository writing class, (A type of writing where the purpose is to explain, inform, or even describe.) to see how well they had mastered the principles of grammar. He asked the class: Is love a noun or a verb? A self-con dent young man in the back of the room o ered this response: On Friday and Saturday nights love is a verb, but I think that the rest of the time it is a noun. Love, as a noun, is a joyful reality. It is a compassionate concern for another, a term of endearment. But love as a verb is a much stronger expression; it anticipates action. As long as love is a noun, we can discuss it, analyze it, and make abstract statements about it. But when love becomes a verb, we must do something. This is what Jesus had in mind when he said: Remain in my love–remain connected with me and with one another. It caught my attention that on this Sunday when the Gospel encourages us to think about love and obedience, we are also joining with people throughout this nation to give thanks for our mothers. No one casts a longer shadow across your life and mine than our moms, whether our mother is alive and sharing life with us or is with the Lord in heaven, today is our day to remember how blessed we have been by our moms or whoever it is that played a formative, mothering role in our lives. Since 1914, this nation has designated the second Sunday in May to be observed as Mother’s Day, and rightly so for today, the Gospel challenges us to create intimate family connections that bind us together with others who love the Lord Jesus. With the exception of Peter and Andrew, James and John, the two sets of brothers, there were no blood- connections or genealogical linkages to bind those original disciples and all who became members of the early Church. So, in this wonderful, I am the vine, you are the branches, discourse, Jesus fashioned a new image of a family tree for us, not formed of cedar or maple or oak, but instead fashioned of a vine, a twisting, spreading, interweaving, living reality that has as its ultimate purpose, bearing fruit that shall remain. The words of Jesus are most appropriate for our observance of Mother’s Day. He speaks to us about persistent love; a love that will not let you go. Remain in my love, Jesus says, keep my commandments and remain in my love. If we were to think of one expression to capture the spirit of my mom, it would be…a tenacious love. Tenacious is a wonderful word that captures a desire to retain, preserve, protect, and hold together. I think I understand the kind of love that Jesus wants us to experience because of my own experience of love from my mom! We are all called to be mother-like in our faithfulness, fortitude, and determination to make a di erence. Today, the highest tribute, I think, that we can give to our moms, whether living or dead, is for us to be kind, loving, and a creatively caring human being. May God bless us so that our lives may be lived in gratitude for those who have rst loved us. Blessings and prayers to all moms today, Father Denis Our Lady of Victory Page 2 Northville, Michigan fi fi fi ff ff
